All good things end too soon. The 24th edition of the CEDE is already behind us. In Dental Radio, a report of news in dentistry to the east of the Oder River. CEDE is not only a Central European exhibition of dental products, but also a research, training and social event. This year some changes could be seen. For three days the ‘FourPack’ at the International Poznań Fair converted into one big dental surgery. The new exhibition pavilion that closes the patio has brought exhibitors nearer to the ‘centre’; there is also a new roofed walkway between the patio and the Convention Centre. Not only the space has changed, but also the opening hours. On Thursday and Friday the fair was open one hour longer than last year. An extended Testing Zone and a Speakers’ Corner have replaced the CEDE Arena. And in the Testing Zone, co-organised by the Be Active Dentist Foundation, the following attractions were waiting for visitors: placing a dental filling on a model; reconstructing a contact point on a model’s labial teeth; extracting a tooth on a model; testing dental products; testing an aquiliser and its capabilities when used together with an electronic face bow; preparing a root canal; becoming familiar with the basics of working with magnifying glasses and the rules for selection of equipment tailored to various working positions; and many other innovations. A stand called Dental Tribune Study Club, combining science, experiments and fun, was prepared, in cooperation with the Be Active Dentist Foundation, for visitors to pavilion 8. A rich selection of interdisciplinary lectures was an alternative to the programme of the 20th Congress of Dental Teams. Carefully selected topics of such teaming projects can arise a genuine need for further education. The best professionals nationwide helped learn not only theory but also practice going beyond what is taught at university level. It was possible to choose among topics such as ‘Dentist’s Communication to Increase Patients’ Demand for Comprehensive Treatment by 30% to 80%’ or ‘Business in Dentistry: How to Increase Monthly Income Without Extending Working Hours’, presented by Dr Kamil Kuczewski. Of course, lectures were held throughout all three days. As it is the case every year during the CEDE exhibitors were awarded whose products received the highest recognition from the Competition Board. At the end of the first day of the exhibition, the Board, presided by Professor Bartłomiej W Loster, awarded, in a secret ballot, two statuettes in the Materials for Technicians category, both to HOLTRADE for FAST PROTEC and F.J.P. in the Auxiliary Materials, Preparations and Preventive Equipment category. The Board also awarded the following statuettes: to BHZ ATOS M.M. Marek Zakrzewski for the ALFA fluid and foam, an integrated system for perioperative dental prophylaxis of the oral cavity; to STERN WEBER Polska for ProTip Turbo; in the Dental Equipment category to HOL-DENTAL Depot for the EyeSpecial C-II digital camera; in the Publications and Education category to POLKARD for O-Atlas, an atlas of orthodontic technique and jaw orthopaedics; there were no awards in the Software and the Dental Materials categories. A concert organised for all CEDE 2014 participants in the shopping arcade at 6.00pm on the first day was nice entertainment! It was an acoustic performance of the greatest hits of Genesis (‘Follow you follow me’, ‘Not about us’, ‘Jesus he knows me’, ‘Mama’ and ‘Carpet Crawlers’) by Ray Wilson, the group’s last vocalist, and his band. The concert was sponsored by RADA. While on 12 September, the second day of the Exhibition, Poland was focused on the CEDE, the FDI Annual World Dental Congress was being held in the Indian capital, some 6,500 km from Poznań. On 7-10 September 2016 the Annual World Dental is scheduled to take place in Poznań, which means an annual break from the CEDE. As stressed by Professor Bartłomiej W. Loster, Chairman of the Polish Society of Dentistry, ‘in 2016 it is not us who go to lectures abroad, it is the world that comes to us!’. The CEDE is an event for everyone. This year the little ones were learning how they should take care of their teeth. Those who have children aged 4-12 years could come with them to the CEDE. For small protégés, Colgate-Gaba had prepared professional care and educational and fun classes in oral classes. The children could also join an interactive game. At the same time the dentists could learn about this year’s innovations in dentistry. For the first time in the CEDE’s history, the audience could use a mobile app to vote for one of the 21 products nominated for the Grand Prix of CEDE 2014. The fair’s organiser urged to vote, with the slogan: ‘You can also take part in awarding the Audience GRAND PRIX!’. It was simple: each participating product was tagged with a unique QR voting code. The only thing you should do was to scan a product’s QR code with the app! The results were being displayed live on the screens in the Fair Office. You could vote for one product only. CEDE 2014’s Audience GRAND PRIX was awarded on the third day. Out of 1255 voters, 51% selected Be Active Dentist: Active Training for Dentists. Congratulations! And if you would like to find out what makes the Be Active Dentist Foundation so special, you had better read the BAD Tribune magazine. The international event saw the premiere of the quarterly’s third issue. BADT is a unique free magazine that speaks a common voice on the market of all Active Dentists. This time BAD also launched the charity campaign: Help actively: come, mount a bike and help! Each kilometre covered was converted to 3 zlotys and assigned for a dentist who cannot work any more due to an ischaemic stroke and needs treatment. It is worth noticing, by the way, that 13 September is World First Aid Day, therefore the CEDE is a perfect occasion to help the needy dentist. An additional incentive for visitors was an electrical toothbrush for the longest rider. The winner covered 40km – congratulations! The three days of the fair have passed very quickly, mainly because there was no time to be bored. The next CEDE will already take place on 10-12 September 2015. Knowledge should be constantly refreshed so that it harmonises with what we already know, therefore every dentist, assistant, technician or student should turn up in Poznań. And already in two years, in September, we will have a great event, and namely: the Annual World Dental Congress organised by FDI and Exactus in the capital of Greater Poland. As Professor Stanisław Suliborski, Research Manager of the 20th Congress of Dental Teams, puts it: ‘We do not need to go to dental exhibitions in Cologne or Chicago to see, hear and touch what is the latest news. Compiled by Anna Świąder CEDE 2014 – 20th Congress of Dental Teams During this year’s CEDE edition, the 20th Congress of Dental Teams was held under the scientific supervision of Professor Stanisław Suliborski. Traditionally dentists, students and technical staff had the opportunity to attend many interesting lectures, workshops and presentations already in the International Poznań Fair’s hall. Over the span of three days twelve lectures of the 20th Congress of Dental Teams, the 1st all-Poland Conference of Hygienists and Dental Assistants under the title: Formerly Help, Today Assistance – AsysDent 2014, and numerous training seminars organised by private companies were held in the comfortable convention space. The lecturers included the best Polish and foreign specialists, pushing the scientific value of the lectures up to very high levels. On the first day of the fair participants had the opportunity to learn the concept of minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry. In the lecture: Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry – Materials and Work Techniques. Concept of Bio-Active Materials for Direct Reconstruction, Dr Kosmas Tolidis discussed, among other things, the use of fibres in reconstructive dentistry; what Giomer means; properties of materials based on S-PRG technology or liquid composites used in ‘conical’ technique. For the business-oriented, a lecture titled: How to Improve the Financial Result of the Dental Practice?, had been prepared to show the exemplary model of dealing with patients and provide examples of poorly organised practices. Prophylaxis was not forgotten during this year’s training. Michał Oboda was dispelling doubts about the hygiene practice; he was providing advise how to create one and motivate patients to make regular follow-up visits. At the same time, in the room next door, participants were listening to Dr Lindy Greenwall, who, in cooperation with Meditrans, was presenting the latest bleaching techniques, addressing the problem of emerging oversensitivity and giving cues about how to communicate with the patient. Very strong interest was attracted by a daylong periodontology session titled: Diagnosing and Treating Periodontal Diseases. The guest lecturers included Dr Ewa Dolińska, Professor Tomasz Konopka, Professor Małgorzata Pietruska and Dr Magdalena Sulewska. There were many interesting lectures for the Congress’s participants on the second day too. Danuta Borczyk, holding a degree in Dentistry, talked about practice that provides the best treatment effects in cosmetic dentistry, as well as about comprehensive prosthetic treatment in cosmetic dentistry. Concurrently, an amazing duo of Professor Mariusz Lipski and dentist Michał Dębicki shared their knowledge of endodontics. In a lecture titled Endodontic Treatment of Difficult Cases: Taking the Right Decisions; Selecting Appropriate Materials, Tools and Techniques; Prognosis, they presented procedures to be followed in case of teeth with tools stuck in the lumen of the canal, as well as discussed repeated endodontic treatment and tooth perforation. Some issues of prophylaxis could not be missed from the programme, either. Teresa Fehrenbach, holding a degree in Dentistry, and Dr Raphaël Moëne presented current directions in dental prophylaxis and its diversity at different stages of life. On the last day three lectures on different subjects were proposed to participants. Dr Jan Pietruski shared his experience of functional occlusion, Dr Bartosz Cerkaski together with Dr Piotr Okoński were solving the dilemmas of prosthetic treatment, addressing, among other things, the issue of using endodontically treated teeth as prosthetic abutments, whereas Dr Maciej Żarow together with Dr Witold Jurczyński were solving difficult clinical situations, showing to the audience numerous effects of their work. The 20th Congress of Dental Teams culminated in a lecture by Professor Stanisław Suliborski, CEDE Research Manager. In his presentation titled: To Touch or Not To Touch the Teeth – That Is the Question. Integrity in Dental Treatment. The Professor many times referred to the problem of excessive interference with the structures of the oral cavity and the increasing popularity of ‘aggressive’ reconstruction methods. To sum up… As every year, the organisers have made their best to make the dental fair attractive. A multitude of lectures, training seminars and presentations, comfortable convention space, most renowned specialists and pleasant atmosphere make the CEDE an event that is absolutely worth visiting. We look forward to the next year’s edition: CEDE 2015! Compiled by Natalia Lamperska
