Christmas and the holidays are almost upon us. Being the season of giving it’s a time when people are kinder and more open-hearted to one another. To help you plan that perfect and unique gift for your loved ones we have some great Philatelic gift ideas suggestions for the coming festive season. We start off this edition by reflecting on the service that the Commissioners of Irish Lights provide around the coastal waters of Ireland. They are more than just lighthouses in the night shining a way for sailors on the seas or buoys floating in the water. Find out more on page 4. This year’s Christmas stamps designed by WorkGroup feature on page 6. The concept for this year is ‘people coming together’ and what better way to depict this than by use of The Three Wise Men who journeyed far and wide to help celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. As mentioned above, on page 10 we offer gift ideas, this year’s annual products. The Irish Stamp Year Book 2016 contains all the commemorative stamps and miniature sheets issued during the year together with a detailed narrative and additional imagery to complement each issue. The Irish Stamp Year Pack 2016 contains a brief overview of each subject in the programme, together with the commemorative stamps in a single, high gloss folder. Let us tell you the story of a brand new millionaire in Northern Ireland who discovered what's known as an 'Inverted Jenny' which some are now calling the "Find of the Decade" on page 12. Our Last Chance Saloon on page 16 presents you with the final opportunity to get your hands on stamps issued for the 1400th Anniversary of the death of St. Columbán and Christmas 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy festive season with your families and friends. As Burton Hillis once said “The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.” I hope you enjoy this issue of The Collector and we will see you again in 2017! The Commissioners of Irish Lights (Irish Lights) is a unique organisation that provides an essential safety service around the coast of Ireland, protecting the marine environment and supporting the marine industry and coastal communities. Ireland has had lighthouses for a very long time: the oldest still in use today dates back well over 1,000 years to perhaps the 5th century. Then, the monks of Rinn Dubháin in Co. Wexford (now known as Hook Head), lit a beacon to warn shipping away from dangerous rocks. 4 The lighthouse itself was built when Lord of Leinster William Marshal commissioned the building in 1207. The monks were enrolled as the first lighthouse keepers and they remained as custodians for several centuries. Today Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world. Today, Irish Lights provides and maintains over 300 general aids to navigation, lighthouses for example. They manage about 4,000 local aids to navigation (buoys, etc) and marks or removes dangerous wrecks outside harbour areas. Irish Lights is crucial to the safety of our nation and to the success of our economy: 95% of our imports and exports are carried on ships. Every year the Irish postal service, An Post, issues Christmas stamps for what is traditionally our busiest period of the whole year. Through November and December, we sort and deliver millions of cards and letters between every home in Ireland and to all corners of the world. The fact that the Irish diaspora is so prevalent and far-flung but also very close in terms of family and friends, adds to this traffic. 6 This year we will issue three stamps in celebration of the yuletide festivities. The concept behind the design is of ‘People Coming Together’ which is very important to the Irish: this is the time of year when a great many people come home to Ireland to see loved ones and those that can’t are never far from our minds. Families all over Ireland are preparing to welcome home their sons and daughters, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends – it is a truly magical time for all of those traditionally strong Irish families. The idea of people coming together is represented by The Holy Family on the 72c stamp and The Three Wise Men on the €1.10 SOAR stamp. The stamp-collecting world is buzzing with the news that a young Northern Irish man walked into a New York auction house recently with an Inverted Jenny which is probably the rarest, most sought-after and most valuable postage stamp in history. The rare 24 cent stamp, which we have featured in The Collector previously, is called an ‘Inverted Jenny’ because it has a US Mail biplane on it that was mistakenly printed upside-down. One hundred of these stamps made it into circulation in 1918 but this one, number 76, has not been seen for 61 years. 12 So how did it get into the hands of this young man? According to George Eveleth, the head of New York auction house Spink’s Philatelic department, the man had been in touch a few weeks earlier. “Apparently, his grandfather had died a couple of years ago, leaving him some stamps. He didn’t know the collection he inherited included one that was of such significant value. I think that he got curious, started looking through the pile of stamps, did some research online and then realised it might be worth some money.” (Photo courtesy of the United States Postal Service) Executive director of the American Philatelic Society, Scott English, said the Irishman maintained that he did not know how his grandfather had acquired the stamp. The Inverted Jenny has been authenticated by experts but quickly became the subject of an ownership dispute that was resolved in the young man’s favour. “Engel gave the collector the right to repurchase the stamp for $11,500 within a year, and my assumption is that the collector never came back and the stamp was sold to another customer,” said English. In the end, the Inverted Jenny was auctioned and bought by the American Philatelic Research Library for $1.3 million. It was bought just in time to be displayed at the World Stamp Show in New York - an event that only comes around every 10 years. Which means that one of the world’s rarest stamps made a rare appearance at one of the world’s rarest events. And one young man from Northern Ireland became a new millionaire. 13 Heritage Department Collection ‘The GPO – 200 YEARS OF HISTORY’ 14B E15.00 In this beautifully produced and illustrated book, Stephen Ferguson, who is Assistant Secretary of An Post, tells the story of the GPO and the people who have played an integral part in its history over the centuries. Designed by Francis Johnston, Dublin’s iconic GPO has been the communications hub of Ireland for 200 years. Famous as the headquarters of the men and women of the 1916 Rising, the building has witnessed not only great events but many ordinary personal stories as well. ‘Business as Usual – GPO staff in 1916’ 12B €12.99 This book examines the Rising from the unique perspective of the men and women who worked for the GPO. Drawing on Post Office and other archives in Dublin and London, a picture is painted of the political sympathies, the sense of duty and the sheer pace and excitement that motivated GPO staff in 1916. Eye-witness accounts and photographs taken within days of the end of the rebellion provide a fresh and vivid portrait of the time and the importance of the Post Office in the event which has defined Irish history for close to a century. ‘THE 1916 RISING’ 16B €19.99 Historian, Fearghal McGarry has written a 9,000 word essay across 108 pages of learned text (in Irish and English) on the Easter Rising. This stunning thread sewn book is printed full colour on 170gsm silk paper. Complementing the text is a range of superb imagery. In addition, this book contains the special souvenir sheet of 16 gummed stamps. 14 Looking for that special gift this Christmas?
