Knowledge Plus Character Pave The Road To College And Beyond.
MCP: Lola Rowe North Family Newsletter
From the Desk of the Principal:
Parents, thank you for joining us in recognizing and celebrating your scholar(s) quarter two
accomplishments on Friday. We saw increases from quarter one to quarter two in every award
category except for attendance. One very impressive recognition was that of 25 scholars in 5th
through 8th grade who earned Black Shirt status, this means they earned a 93% or higher GPA and
maintained 93% or more of their virtuous dollars. Please continue to push your scholar(s) towards
excellence as we look forward to celebrating them again in quarter 3!
Our next major event is our Black History Program which is on February 25, 2017 at 1:15p.m. in our
school gymnasium. We set aside time each year to come together as a whole school to celebrate
our history which is rich of men and women who made incredible sacrifices and accomplishments
so that we all can have more better opportunities through equality and equity. While events like the
Sherman Park incident over the summer and the recent presidential election in November as well
as President Trump's executive order to ban some immigrants from entering into our country in
January are all stark reminders that we have a long way to go as a nation and our scholars learning
early about who they are and what they can accomplish is needed in order to get there. Our
scholars have been learning, practicing, and preparing to teach and showcase their talents in
observance of Black History Month. You will be impressed to learn from our scholars about
musicians, educators, Civil Rights activists, and children who blazed the trails, broke down barriers,
and stood up against racial and social injustices in America. We look forward to seeing you at our
program.
Quarter 3 is underway and as we continue to do all that we can to support your scholar in his/ her
readiness for college and beyond I remind you of a few things that are helpful in our partnership in
making this year a continued success.
Attendance- bring scholars to school every day. We notice more scholars miss school on
Mondays and Fridays and when MPS is out. When scholars are out they miss very valuable
instruction.
AR- Promote AR (Accelerated Reader) at home. Scholars should bring AR books home
daily. Ask his/ her teacher to explain how they are doing with AR. Reading is fundamental
and there is a direct correlation between literacy and success.
Zearn/ ALeks- scholars can log in from home and complete activities- All you need is
internet access. Scholars know how to log in independently.
Proactivity- Aim for 0 discipline deposits, 0 Life's work deposits, and 0 uniform depositsScholars who receive 2 or fewer deposits in a quarter with 96.5% attendance or higher are
more likely above the 85% GPA as well. "Knowledge Plus Character Pave the Road to
College and Beyond!"
Rest- Our scholars work extremely hard at school. I imagine most MCP scholars fall asleep
on the drive home from school. After a full day of school at MCP it is important that scholars
get adequate rest. My advice is to have scholars in bed before 9:00p.m. on school nights.
This gives them the rest needed so that they have the stamina required for a full day of
rigorous instruction at school.
If you need any help or would like to speak to someone about your scholars experience at school
please contact me or Mr. Williams (Parent Coordinator) at school. #UNITE
History teaches us so much about who we are, where we have been, and what we have learned.
Our history is full of men and women who made incredible accomplishments but were never
recognized because of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation.
Black History Month is a wonderful time to learn anew about those who blazed trails, broke through
barriers, made a statement or labored long and hard - including our own ancestors and neighbors.
MPS is well on its way to sending 10,000 students to see the movie Hidden Figures, and I am
thrilled that our community is coming together to support this effort. This movie teaches so many
things - perhaps most important, that we all have the ability within ourselves to do great things, even
though others might not see it.
Black History Month is the perfect time to appreciate each other. I am so proud to be part of the rich
diversity that makes our district unique.

Concerns about lead levels???
Recently, Milwaukee College Prep decided to take precautions regarding potential lead levels in all
of the sinks and water fountains at all four campuses. Good news! All four campuses were cleared
of any concerns. There were a few obsolete, utility area fixtures not utilized by students that
registered above normal and services have been terminated in those locations. If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact your Director of Operations.
Make-up Picture Day
Make-up picture day is
scheduled for Friday,
February 17th. Scholars are
required to wear their

***Inclement Weather Advisory***
If Milwaukee Public Schools closes due to bad weather, Milwaukee College Prep is closed. Listen to
the radio or television for the announcement of the closing of MPS.
In the event that weather conditions make travel to school hazardous and unsafe, but MPS does not
close, it is recommended that parents use their discretion in bringing their child/ren to school. Once
the school day has started, school will not be canceled early in the event that weather conditions
become bad during the day. In these cases, it is up to the parents to decide if they want to pick their
children up early.
If the outdoor temperature is below 18 degrees F with the wind chill, scholars will be staying inside
for recess. However, if the temperature permits, we will be sending our scholars outside for recess,
even on cold snowy days. Please make sure your child has the appropriate cold weather attire,
such as hats, mittens, gloves, boots and a winter jacket.
