height2 (m)
a) Calculate the BMI of a person with a mass of 65 kg
and a height of 1.67 metres. Show your working.
Make sure you are able to use
the formula to calculate BMI. To
work out height m2 you need
to multiply height by itself. For
example, if a person’s height is
1.68 metres the calculation will be
1.68 3 1.68. You then divide the
body mass by the height2.

different body masses who have diabetes.

3 There are two types of diabetes, Type I and Type II. People who have either type of diabetes
are unable to control the levels of glucose in their blood.
a) State which type of diabetes results from a person being resistant to insulin.
(1 mark)
b) Give two ways in which Type I diabetes can be controlled.
(2 marks)
c) Explain why a diabetic who takes regular exercise may not require as much insulin as a
diabetic who does not take regular exercise.

You need to make sure that you understand the key words
for this topic and you use them in any answers. Remember:
photo means ‘light’ as in photography; gravi means ‘heavy’
as in gravity, which gives you weight; geo means ‘related
to the ground’ as in geology. You can use geotropism or
gravitropism when answering questions.

a) Place an X on the diagram where auxins are produced.
b) Place a Y on the diagram showing where auxins travel to, causing the shoot to bend.
c) Place a Z on the part of the plant that shows positive gravitropism.

ALERT
Students have struggled with exam
questions similar to this
– be prepared!
If a question asks about the direction of growth in a shoot,
you should describe the effect of light on auxin and how this
changes cell elongation, not just link the direction of light to
the curvature of the shoot.

Biology extended writing 3
People with Type I diabetes are likely to make frequent visits to a doctor. The advice given by a
doctor to patients with Type I diabetes may include:
• Watch what you eat.
• Take more exercise.
The doctor will also prescribe medication for the patient that includes injections of a hormone.
Explain the advice given by the doctor to a patient with Type I diabetes and why the doctor
will prescribe injections of a hormone for this patient.
(6 marks)
You are more likely to get better marks on extended writing if you plan your answer before you start writing.
The question asks you to explain the advice given by the doctor to the patient with Type I diabetes and why
the doctor may prescribe injections of a hormone for his patient. Think about:
• what Type I diabetes is
• how controlling the diet can help someone with Type I diabetes
• how taking exercise can help someone with Type I diabetes
• the hormone needed by patients with Type I diabetes to control their blood sugar concentration
• why that hormone is important.
