He studied at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1961 to 1965 and in 1968 was an art assistant at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. De Andrea turned to sculpture while at University, initially casting molds in fiberglass and painting them with motorcar paint. He then refined his technique, by using latex acrylic or oil paint on polyvinyl to achieve the lifelike tones and high level of detail seen in his later works. He had his first one-man show at the O. K. Harris Gallery in New York in 1970. John de Andrea’s works were shown in museums and major expositions in Europe early in his career. 1971 at the Biennale in Paris France and the Kunstmarkt, Cologne, Germany; 1972 Documenta V in Kassel, Germany, 1978 Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy and again at Documenta in 1981. He rapidly developed a style of casting and then painting fiber-glass or polyvinyl acetate sculptures of figures from life. The extreme verism of his work links it to Photorealism. The sculptures are usually of one or two young, elegant and casually posed nude figures, usually female, as in Classical Illusion. The high degree of realism is heightened by the coloration of the sculpture. In Classical Illusion the model, posing dispassionately, is casually ‘draped’ over an idealized classical male marble torso. How does the viewer engage in the relationship between these two figures? De Andrea deliberately evokes a response from the viewer through the positioning and placement of the figures. De Andrea calls to his audience for participation, he waits for the viewer to respond to the figures in some way so he creates an immaculate surface for this to occur. He works with preconceived ideas of beauty believing that the nude figure reveals a lot more about a person than a clothed one. From all angles, the elements of this sculpture are arranged in a calm and balanced manner. This reinforces the relationship between the figure and the torso. The viewer’s eye follows the pale flesh, the dark tones of the model’s sweeping hair and the shadowed areas. The obvious muteness of the torso and the soft silence of the model, neither directly making eye contact with the viewer, heightens the self-containment of this artwork. John de Andrea wants his sculptures to be able to breathe. He obtains this high level of realism combining the use of modern materials with a technique of casting which goes back to the bronze casting of ancient Greece and Rome. De Andrea reduces the skin tones in this artwork which is reminiscent of black and white photography. He depicts the figures almost in grisaille. This reminds the viewer that the figure is painted with the shades and tones intentionally heightening the form. The coloration of the figures is also reminiscent of gradation of the color of marble statues show clearly in just such a combination of materials used in Classical Illusion.
