Preamble
HealthySmileHappyChild(HSHC)isanintersectoral,collaborativepartnershipthat
takesanupstreamcommunitydevelopmentapproachtoengagecommunitiesinEarly
ChildhoodCaries(ECC)preventionstrategiesandpromotionofearlychildhoodoralhealth.
ECC,alsoknownasearlychildhoodtoothdecayorcavities,isadestructive,yet
preventable,formoftoothdecayinyoungchildren,particularlythoselivingin
disadvantagedpopulations.Manitobaexperiencesexcessivedemandandwaittimesfor
pediatricdentalsurgeryundergeneralanesthesia.Thisburdenandtheneedforeffective
preventionandsustainableoralhealthpromotionstrategiesledtothedevelopmentofthe
HSHCpartnership.
KeyobjectivesoftheHSHCprojecthavebeento1)gaincommunityacceptanceof
theimportanceoftheissueofECC,2)buildonexistingprogramswhichtargetyoung
children,3)increaseparentalknowledgeofECCprevention,4)increaseknowledgeof
existingserviceandhealthprovidersoftheimportanceofprevention,and5)encourage
existingserviceandhealthproviderstoincorporatepreventionactivitiesintotheir
practice.

caries‐riskassessmenttoolthatcanbeusedatPreschoolHealthandWellnesseventsand

programandatImmigrantServices.The“CaringforyourChildren’sTeeth”newcomer
resourcewasusedduringthepresentations.

UnitDetachmentinShilo,heldaFamilyDayonAugust20,2016.TheyrequestedHSHC
resourcesandtheuseofthetoothbrushingpuppetstobeusedatadentalboothbeingsup
attheevent.

OnSeptember22,2016theWellnessFacilitatorinPineFallsrequestedanupdatedlistof
dentistswhoacceptfreefirstvisitsintheregion.
InAugustahealthfairwasheldinFairford,Manitoba.Therewasagreatturnoutwithover
150childrenand250adultsattending.Anoralhealthdisplaywassetupwithtooth
brushingpuppets,thesugargameandHSHCresources.
AnotherhealthfairwasheldonOctober27,2016inBlackRiver.TheHSHCcoordinator
attendedtheeventandanoralhealthdisplay,usingthesameresourcesastheprevious
healthfairwassetup.
Theregionislookingatdevelopingapermanentdisplayboardonearlychildhoodoral
healthtobeusedatfuturecommunityevents.

ThreeoralhealthpresentationswereconductedwithHealthyBabygroupsandthe
WellnessFacilitatorbroughttheHalloweeninsertsashandoutsforparticipants.
TheHalloweennewsletterinsertwasforwardedontoallpublichealthnursesandFamily
FirsthomevisitorsintheregionbytheIERHAHealthyBabyFacilitator.Theinsertwasalso
usedbytheHealthyBabyFacilitatoratHealthyBabyGroupsastheyconductedoralhealth
sessions at each site to coincide with Halloween. The inserts were handed out to all
participants.
TheDirectoroftheSt.LaurentAboriginalHeadStartprogramwillbeusingtheinsertsin
theirmonthlye‐newsletter,whichissentouttoallparentswithchildrenintheirheadstart
program.Thenewslettercurrentlyhas2,554activecontactsthroughouttheInterlake‐
Easternarea.Theinsertswerealsosharedwith“Centresdelapetiteenfanceetdela
famille”(parent‐childcentres)inSt‐GeorgesandinSt.Laurent.TheSt‐Georgescentre
postedtheFrenchversionoftheHolidayinsertontheirFacebookpagewhichatthattime
hadfollowers.
OnNovember18ththeWellnessFacilitatorrequestedanewsletterinsertforDecemberin
bothEnglishandFrench.
TheFamiliesFirstCoordinatorforNorthWestIERHArequestedthattheHSHCcoordinator
presenttootherFamiliesFirstCoordinatorsandhomevisitorsintheregion.OnDecember
15,2016theHSHCcoordinatorpresentedatKinPlaceinOakbank,updatingthegroupon
HSHCresourcesandkeymessagesaswellasdiscussingtheuseofcaries‐riskassessment
toolsintheirwork.

“BabyBox”project.WinnipegBoldnessProjectisanewinitiativeworkingwiththeNorth
EndcommunitytoimproveoutcomesforyoungchildreninthePointDouglasarea.They
arelookingforcollaborationindevelopinga“BabyBox”birthkitfornewmomsandmay
includeHSHCresources.
OnNovember16thand17thHSHCparticipatedinHealthyChildManitoba’s2016National
ChildDayForum:EveryFamilyMatters.TheHSHCcoordinatorconductedaworkshop
sessionfocusingonwhathealthprofessionalscandointheirownpracticeregarding
children’soralhealth.HSHCalsohadadisplayboothattheeventwhereHSHCresources
werehandedout,includingtheHSHCposterseries.
TherewasarequestfromaRedRiverCollegenursingstudentfortoothbrushesand
toothpastetobedistributedatagrade4healthfair.
