Cubanapolisinstructions

Cubanapolis
Cubanapolis is a “cubbing” event which showcases our Scouts. Each Scout,
with the help of his family, builds a “race car” out of a large cardboard box. You
may get boxes from the grocery store (cereal boxes, etc.) He decorates it with
paint, foil, “sticky” paper, whatever. At the Cubanapolis - our version of the Indy
500 - the Scouts race their cars. The family members serve as “pit crews”,
“starters”, “flagmen”, and “official timers” for the race. The top three times will be
awarded ribbons.
Parents are to cut out the car. It can be decorated by using contact paper or
may be painted. The center of the car is open so the Scout may step into it. Hand
holds should be cut out of the sides so the Scout may carry or “race” the car. The
Scout should decorate the car by himself as much as possible.

Each racer will start at their “pit stations” which will marked areas placed around

of a roped off area outside of the “track”. You should bring your own lawn chair.
ALL SPECTATORS MUST REMAIN IN THIS AREA --- CLEAR OF THE
TRACK. Only the Scouts racing and AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL are allowed
on the track during the race.
SAFETY SIGNALS:
 Green flag and CUBMASTER’s signal mean “Go”
 Waving yellow flags by AUTHORIZED SAFETY PERSONNEL mean “Slow
Down”
 Waving red flags by AUTHORIZED SAFETY PERSONNEL mean to “Stop”
 A LOUD WHISTLE by the CUBMASTER and/or ASSISTANT means
“FREEZE” right where you are
 Music stops means “FREEZE” right where you are (we may not have music)
 A checkered flag by the OFFICIAL from each PIT CREW means you have
completed the designated laps and should return to the PIT.
RACING PROCEDURE:
When the signal is given, Scouts will run counterclockwise around the track.
After 2 laps, each Scout must pull into his pit stop for:
 Tire change - pull on tube socks up over top shoes (feet of socks have been cut
out so Scout won’t slip while running - WORD OF ADVICE - don’t wear shoes
that are hard to get on and off).
 Refueling - Scout must drink 3 ounces of water
 Windshield wiping - member of pit crew wipes forehead of Scout driver.
After the first pit stop, the Scout must run 2 more laps. Then there is a
second pit stop and 2 more laps to finish line. (TOTAL RACE -- 6 laps and 2 pit
stops)
Cars will be judged for the BEST TIME - - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. (The
clock starts running when the signal is given by the CUBMASTER and the clock is
stopped when the Scout pulls into his pit at the completion of the 6th lap.)
SAFETY is a key factor in any Scouting event. Participants who qualify will
receive a SAFE DRIVER AWARD.
Spectators are encourage to cheer for the racers and packs may show Scout
Spirit by making and displaying signs, etc.
