November 18, 2014 The Great Fire by Jim Murphy Text Feature: Photos and Illustrations Text features are elements that writers use to help readers better understand the ideas and events presented in the text. November 18, 2014 In your Reading Journal, takes notes on the following: Photographs/illustrations are one type of text feature. Photographs can add to the understanding of text. When a reader can visualize something that is happening in a story, he is able to make a connection that will "stick." Pictures create memories. In nonfiction, pictures can be especially helpful because they help convey information that may be too technical or detailed. In your Reading Journal, takes notes on the following: Since photography was not widely used in 1871, newspapers and magazines often included illustrations, or drawings, to visually supplement the text. Captions appeared below the photos/illustrations to explain the content. November 18, 2014 In your Reading Journal on the Purpose for Reading page, write the following: Section 2 (Ch. 3 - 5) Read to discover how four eyewitnesses - Joseph E. Chamberlin, Horace White, Alexander Frear, and Claire Innes - reacted as the Great Fire raged throughout the city. In your Reading Journal on the Chapter 3 page, do the following: (1) At the top, summarize the chapter in 10 words or less. (2) Draw a picture to help your remember this chapter in the middle of the page. (3) At the bottom, write a Level 1 question and a Level 2 question. In your Reading Journal on the Chapter 4 page, do the following: (1) At the top, summarize the chapter in 10 words or less. (2) Draw a picture to help your remember this chapter in the middle of the page. (3) At the bottom, write a Level 1 question and a Level 2 question. November 18, 2014 Questions related to Text Feature: Photographs and Illustrations 1) Examine the illustration on p. 44 and read the caption. What do you learn from the illustration? What new information do you learn from reading the caption? 2) Now look at illustration of the firefighter and fire-fighting wagon on p. 43. How effective do you think this equipment would be in fighting a blaze like the one depicted on p. 44? Explain. 3) Examine the illustration on p. 61. What do you learn from the illustration about people's means of escape from the burning city? 4) How does the caption help explain what the people heading back into the city and those along the shoreline are doing? 5) Look at the photo on p. 88 and read the caption. How does a photo differ from an illustration? 6) Why might a photo be considered a more reliable source of information than an illustration? Photo/Illustration Analysis Practice - Whole Group November 18, 2014 Partner Work 1) You will need ONE Photo Analysis Worksheet per group. Put both of your names on it. 2) You will be assigned a page number from the book. 3) When you receive your assigned page number, open to that page and look at the photo/illustration. 4) Follow the directions on the Photo Analysis Worksheet. Be thorough with your work. 5) Turn in your Photo Analysis Worksheet when you are finished. 6) Work on your Reading Journal and/or read your AR novel.
