A significant number of our places of worship are not only used by local residents but are visited by thousands of people from across the world every year. Never before has the need for interfaith co-operation and dialogue been greater. The Westminster Faith Exchange (our local interfaith body), under the guidance of its recently formed Executive Committee, is developing an annual programme of activities that aim to encourage greater interfaith dialogue, understanding, and co-operation in the City. I hope that Westminster’s faith communities, residents and visitors will find this updated directory a useful source of information and use it to help them in their knowledge and understanding of this City’s faiths. Councillor Carolyn Keen Chairman Westminster Faith Exchange 2 Directory of Faiths Directory of Faiths in Westminster Directory of Faiths Directory of Faiths in Westminster Please note that in some cases where a religion (e.g. Sikhism; Zoroastrianism) has no place of worship or centre in Westminster, the details of the nearest place of worship elsewhere in London are included. All of the faith organisations with an entry in the Directory are listed alphabetically by name in the Index. There is also a second index, which provides a listing of entries by ward. We hope you will make use of the listing by ward index in order to identify the other places of worship/faith based organisations near you so that you can make local connections with all the diverse faith groups in your area. Acknowledgements We would like to thank the faith organisations in Westminster for their help in providing the information included in this directory. Disclaimer Note that the Directory cannot claim to be fully comprehensive in terms of its coverage of faith organisations in Westminster and it is possible that some organisations have been missed. We would hope to include any missed organisations when the directory is next updated. 3 Baha’i Faith in Westminster Baha’i Organisation of Directory & How to use it The Directory is divided into 10 chapters, one for each of the nine religions represented in Westminster and one for interfaith entries. The chapters are organised alphabetically based on the name of each religion (i.e. Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian etc.). Each chapter is introduced by a statement of belief of the particular religion. The faith organisations are then listed in alphabetical order by name within each chapter. With respect to the Christian section, where the information has been provided, the Christian denomination is shown under the name of each listed organisation. The Baha’i Faith has three underlying principles, that there is one God, that this God has been the inspiration for all the major religions that have appeared in history, and that mankind is one family. This God has been known by many names in history, including Jehovah, Allah, Brahma, etc. Baha’is believe there is one reality behind these names and that Moses, Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad were all inspired by this one God. Baha’u’llah, the founding prophet of the Baha’i Faith, is recognised by the Baha’is as God’s prophet for this day. The idea of unity of humankind is also fundamental to Baha’i belief. However, the diversity of humanity in terms of race, ethnicity and religious belief is also something to be appreciated, just as the diversity of colour, fragrance and variety of flowers in a garden add to the beauty of that garden. Baha’is believe in the independent investigation of truth, the equality of men and women, that science and religion should “go hand in hand” and the need for an international legislature to govern world affairs. Praying daily and reflecting on the scriptures are important to Baha’i spiritual life, as is service to others. Baha’i Directory of Faiths in Westminster The Buddha’s teaching distinguishes itself by its reasoned view of reality. Mental process is discrete from materiality but intensely bound up with it as a prime conditioning factor. All that we are Is the result of what we have thought; We are founded on our past thoughts, We are made of those thoughts. Our thoughts are the matrix From which we spring. A Tranquility Zone (meditative readings from sacred writings with music) is held regularly at Maria Assumpta Centre in 23 Kingston Square, W8. Regular Children’s classes are also held. Baha’is run a World Citizenship programme for schools. 5 Baha’i The quality of originating thoughts determine the quality of their mental and bodily resultants (kharma). Life is a series of fleeting processes, insubstantial and unsatisfactory in themselves. When confusion is dismissed the processes of life are seen clearly (nirvana). This position is reached by recognising and then penetrating Four Noble Truths: the recognition of unsatisfactoriness of mental and material states, and how they arise from affinity and attraction to past states; and penetration of how one can unwind the process within oneself, and the Eightfold Path practised for this purpose. The BBA is non-sectarian and seeks to express religious devotion and discipline in ways suitable to Western practitioners. Although there are many different denominations within Christianity they all share the same main beliefs. They believe in and worship the one God who they can come to know in three ways (the Trinity): • the Father, who is beyond all things, created all things and constantly guides and sustains all his creation; • the Son, Jesus Christ, God who became human, whose teaching and life we follow and by whose death and resurrection we are freed from sin and given eternal life; • the Spirit, the enabler, the presence of God within us and the world, God’s inspiration, power and strength. The holy book for Christians is the Bible, made up of a selection of the Hebrew scriptures (the Old Testament), of Gospels telling of the life and teaching of Jesus and of letters from early Christian leaders containing teaching about Christian life and faith. Christianity is expressed through worship and mission, private prayer, and service to others and lives led to the glory of God. These expressions have many different forms and styles. All Church services are held in Swedish Christianity Hinduism in Westminster Directory of Faiths in Westminster 23 Chrisitianity Hinduism Directory of Faiths in Westminster Hinduism is perhaps the oldest of all religions and yet endures today as a healthy, colourful and exuberant tradition. It has intimate links with India, but its influence now extends across the globe. It is particularly conspicuous through its art, food, dress, culture and philosophy. Under the umbrella term of Hinduism exist extremely diverse traditions, differing philosophies and a wide variety of religious practises. Yet the coherent links between all these are visible too. These links indicate the common belief that the real self (atma) is distinct from the temporary body made of matter (prakriti). The eternal soul identifies with matter and is entrapped by maya (illusion). Impelled by lust, greed, anger, etc. it accepts the cycle of repeated birth and death (samsara). Each soul creates its unique destiny according to the universal law of action and reaction (karma). Hindus are required to honour all life thus a practitioner is required to adhere to a vegetarian diet. The goal of Hindus is moksa - liberation from this perpetual cycle through reidentification with the Supreme. Hinduism accepts different paths towards the common goal of union with God. Nonetheless, it demands respect for the authority of the holy books (the Vedas such as Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam) and stresses the importance of and commitment to one’s ordained duties (Dharma) as revealed by these holy texts and received through the spiritual mentor (Guru). The faithful Muslim believes in One God to the exclusion of any other deity. The arabic word for God is Allah. The word Islam means, among other things, peace and submission. The word Muslim literally means “one who submits to God! The faithful Muslim believes in One God, in all the prophets and messengers sent by Him (starting from Adam, Noah, to Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad - being the last or “Seal of the prophets”); in the books (scriptures sent to God’s messenger); in the angels, in the Day of Judgement, and in the absolute knowledge and wisdom of God. In Islam, the ‘spiritual’ and the ‘physical’ are part of an integral and whole way of life. The practise of the five pillars, on which Islam is built, ensures that this integrated ideal is realised. These pillars are: the declaration of faith (shahadah); performing prayer (salah); the wealth tax/poor-dues (zakah); fasting (sawm) and the pilgrimage to Makkah (Hajj). These basic duties serve up the moral character of both the individual and the community. Muslims derive their laws from their holy book, the Quran, and the Sunnah. The Sunnah is the practical example of the prophet Muhammed. Jinas are so called because they are believed to have won victory over passions of attachment, aversion, etc. that defile the soul. They are enlightened human teachers and are also called Tirthankaras. Mahavira, whose name means “the most courageous one” is believed by Jains to be the latest of these Tirthankaras and to have been born into a Kshatriya (noble) family in 599 B.C. in that part of India now known as Bihar. Mahavir lived and taught for 72 years. The code of conduct of Jains is based on five vows: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (devotion to truth), Asteya (nonstealing), Aparigraha (nonpossessiveness) and Brahmacharya (chastity). Ahimsa (non-violence) is the anchor of Jainism and is one of the basic virtues. Vegetarianism is a way of life for a Jain. Jiva Daya - the practice of vegetarianism is seen as an instrument for the practice of non-violence and peaceful co-existence. Jainism teaches that life is sacred and that all possible kindness should be shown towards all the living things. Jainism is the faith of some 5 million or more people around the world. In the UK there are many Jain ‘Sanghs’, collectively numbering almost 30,000. The first Jain temple in Europe was unveiled in Leicester in August 1985. The Jain community in London is known as Bhakti Mandal. Jainsim Directory of Faiths in Westminster Judaism in Westminster Directory of Faiths in Westminster 35 Jainism Directory of Faiths in Westminster Judaism Jain Alliance C/o Globe E A 23 Springfield Road Harrow Middlesex HA1 1QF Website www.jainalliance.co.uk Judaism is a faith that goes back four thousand years to Abraham, the first monotheist. His story is related in the Torah, the sacred text of Judaism, which is written by hand in the scrolls that can be seen in any synagogue. The rabbis said that the world is based on three things, on Torah, on worship and on deeds of loving kindness. The declaration of faith in Judaism can be found in the SHEMA: “Hear O Israel, the Eternal One is our God, the Eternal God is One”. Jews traditonally say this twice a day, thereby making a connection with God and with other Jews all over the world. Jews live their lives according to mitzvot (commandments) given in the Torah. These include ritual and ethical commandments. For example Jews are commanded to eat kosher food but also to love their neighbours and care for the poor and the needy. A synagogue functions as a house of prayer, a house of study, and a house of assembly. Graven images, including human images, are prohibited in the Synagogue. Instead the focus is on the ARK and the NER TAMID (everlasting light) which hangs above it, a reminder of the everlasting light in the temple which was a symbol of God’s presence. 36 Judaism New London Synagogue 33 Abbey Road NW8 0AT Tel 020 7328 1026 Fax 020 7372 3142 Contact The Administrator Email [email protected] Website www.newlondon.org.uk Services Friday Service at 18:30, Saturdays 09:15 and Sunday school 09:45 (head teacher Susannah Alexandra) New West End Synagogue St Petersburgh Place W2 4LB Tel 020 7229 2631 Fax 020 7229 2355 Contact The Administrator Email [email protected] Website www.newwestend.org.uk Services Religious education, awareness raising Central Synagogue 36 Hallam Street W1W 6NW Tel 020 7580 1355 Fax 020 7636 3831 Contact Craig Levinson, Administrator Email [email protected] Website www.brijnet.org/centralsyn/ Services Marriage/family-counselling clothes for the poor, food for the poor, cash assistance to the destitute St John’s Wood Synagogue 37/41 Grove End Road NW8 9NG Tel 020 7286 3838 Fax 020 7266 2123 Email [email protected] Website www.shulinthewood.com Services Religious services Liberal Jewish Synagogue 28 St John's Wood Road NW8 7HA Tel 020 7286 5181 Fax 020 7266 3591 Email [email protected] Website www.ljs.org Services Friday Service at 18:45, Saturday Service 11:00. The purpose of creation in Zoroastrianism is to defeat evil. Zoroastrians in their scriptures, Avesta, are constantly urged to perform good thoughts, good words and good deeds as the only way of defeating evil. Zoroastrians worship in Fire Temples. A consecrated fire burns continually inside them. The oldest Zoroastrian consecrated fire in Iran is over 2500 years old, while in India the oldest fire has been burning for over 1000 years, consecrated by the first Zoroastrian religious refugees to flee Iran.
