Welcome and introduction
Our definition of ‘leadership’ is simply ‘getting people to go above their
job description’. This is easy to say but much less easy to achieve. The
problem is that the whirlwind of change in the last 12 months means that
school leaders and teams are worn out by incessant initiatives and budget
cuts. We’re challenged to come up with new ways of working and most
people are sick to death of being asked to ‘think outside the box’. Staff
numbers have been eroded. And, as the dark winter months approach,
staff energy levels will dwindle even further. We plod on, counting down
to the weekend or the next holiday. Then we’ll be happy! But what if we’ve
got it all wrong?
The ‘Art of Brilliance’ team will talk about their research into happiness
and flourishing and how it’s a vital ingredient in times of change. They will
(almost certainly) entertain you with tales of ‘2%ers’ and ‘mood hoovers’.
They might talk about oranges, hard boiled eggs and Bob the Builder.
They might venture into clever territory, in which case you’ll get Losada,
flow, heliotropes and ‘social contagion’. If you’re lucky, they might even
share a couple of top happiness tips. Who knows? ‘Leading with a Smile’
is a flexible feast. Intricate planning is good. But flying by the seat of your
pants is so such more exciting!

Andy is a trainer, best-selling author and frustrated
comic. He is also an NLP (Neuro Linguistic
Programming) trainer and master of time line therapy.
He has spent his time learning about leadership,
communication, human interaction and positive
psychology. Andy co-writes the Being Brilliant series of books and has
delivered to companies as diverse as DHL, University of Nottingham,
Smith & Nephew, Ginsters, IKEA, Pirelli and The National Trust. His
keynotes are thought-provoking, inspiring and very funny. The ‘Art of
Brilliance’ team have adapted their hugely successful business leaders’
programme to meet the needs of teachers, parents and teenagers.
