What people say about Leuchie
Being able to come
to Leuchie is a joy. It’s like
going into a world where
everyone understands
you. Every aspect of your
needs is accommodated
and nothing is ever too
much trouble for the
staff. Their care is above
and beyond. I particularly
love the company at
Leuchie and have made
some great friends there
over the years. Every time
I leave I can’t wait for my
next ‘Leuchie time’!
Anne,
Leuchie
guest
Seeing the change
in my wife over our 11
nights at Leuchie has
been tremendous for me.
While we’ve been here
she has become brighter
and full of smiles again.
I can’t remember when I
last felt as relaxed and at
ease with the world as I
do at the moment.
Delmar,
husband
of Leuchie
guest
The best thing about
working at Leuchie House
is that there’s always
a smile to be seen and
laughter to hear. The
guests are so friendly and
by day two everyone is
like an old friend. One of
the fun parts for me is
seeing guests try things
they don’t think they will
be able to do and visit
places that they wouldn’t
otherwise get to see.
Kim,
Leuchie’s
guest
engagement
manager
It is an awesome,
inspirational place
where guests can be
who they really are and
limited ability is seen
as a challenge to be
overcome rather than
a blockage to activities.
It is a real joy to work
with dedicated, caring
people who simply make
things happen for the
guest and carer.

Leuchie

respite breaks for people with a wide range of long term
complex conditions, so you can be confident that you
will have exactly the care you need, 24 hours a day.
Our expert nursing team are on duty

of mind and security.

Tailored to your needs
Physiotherapy
From the time you book a break at Leuchie, we’ll start to
put together a personal care plan for you. We’ll ask you
to provide information about your condition, medication
and care needs. This will help make sure Leuchie is right for
you and, if so, means we can start putting in place the care
package you need. One of our nursing team will phone you
before your break to talk through any concerns you have
and go into more detail about your needs so that your care
plan is ready when you arrive.
One of the things which makes Leuchie House unique
is our complimentary physiotherapy service, open to
all our guests.
Experience of complex conditions
We have welcomed people with a wide range of long term
physical conditions for respite breaks at Leuchie over the
years. These include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, motor
neurone disease, cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and stroke.
If you have a different condition to those listed, we are
always happy to discuss this on an individual basis to assess
whether we can meet your needs.
Leuchie House has open access so we regret we are
unable to take a booking for anyone requiring secure
accommodation.
In our well-equipped physio suite, our expert
physiotherapists can work with you on a one-to-one basis
over the course of your break, and can even give you advice
on a programme to follow at home. They can also help
with wheelchair assessments and adjustments to improve
your comfort and wellbeing. The team run fun exercise and
relaxation classes you can take part in too during your stay.
Counselling
We can arrange counselling and emotional support
if you would find this helpful.
The standard of care is very high.
We’re basking in pleasure at the
memory of last week’s visit.

The house, grounds and facilities
Leuchie House and grounds
Bedrooms
One of the most obvious things that
makes Leuchie unique is the house
itself. The building is a classical country
mansion house dating from 1779. As
you come up the driveway through
the grounds, we hope you’ll feel you’ve
come to somewhere very special.
Our seven single and eight twin
bedrooms are light and spacious
with electric profiling and height
adjustable beds. You’ll have your
own nurse call system and
personal alarm.
The building has been completely
refurbished to make it fully accessible
and a welcoming comfortable
environment for all our guests. The
large and airy public rooms have
stunning views across the grounds and
are full of interesting original features.
The extensive grounds around
the house add to its beauty and
tranquillity and are home to lots
of wildlife.
10
Single rooms are allocated by the
nursing team on a care needs basis.
We also have three carer’s
bedrooms, separate from our
guest rooms. While there’s no need
to bring a carer or family member
with you, you are very welcome
to if you’d like to enjoy a break
together. We’ll take on all the caring
responsibilities so you can both have
a relaxing break.

Our guest engagement team organise
a programme of in-house activities and
entertainment for each holiday which
offers something for everyone. Each of
our breaks has a theme which provides
a focus to the types of activities we
run. But if there’s anything specific
you’d really like to do on your break,
please tell us and we’ll do everything
we can to make it happen.
All our activities are adapted to
individual abilities to make sure
everyone can take part. In the
evenings, entertainment ranges from
live music to film and quiz nights.
My first visit surpassed all expectations.
Leuchie looks after the person as a whole
rather than just physical needs.
Outings
Our accessible vehicles mean you’ll be able to get out and
about around East Lothian and Edinburgh during your stay
at Leuchie, accompanied by one of our carers. If you are
staying for 11 nights, you will usually have a choice of two
outings, or one if you are here for a shorter break.*
Locations for trips vary depending on the theme of your
holiday but if there are specific places in the area you’d like
to visit we’ll always do our best to take you there. Favourite
visitor attractions for many of our guests include the
National Museum of Flight, the Scottish Seabird Centre,
the Royal Botanical Gardens, the National Museum of
Scotland, Holyrood Palace, and the Kelpies. We can also
take you shopping, to the cinema or theatre, to garden
centres, out for lunch or afternoon tea. If you have a
taste for adventure, we can help you with that too! An
increasingly popular activity for Leuchie guests is to take to
the skies on a microlight flight. Your options are endless!
Therapies and beauty treatments
During your stay at Leuchie you can choose to book a
range of relaxing therapies and beauty treatments.*
These include hairdressing, manicures and pedicures,
facials, massage, reflexology and foot health treatments.
*
There is a small charge for trips beyond North Berwick to cover petrol and vehicle running costs. You’ll pay your own admission charge for any visitor attractions, films or shows you go to.
** You’ll pay at the end of your break for any therapies or treatments you’ve had.
13

and help from our friendly breakfast
team. Or you could have breakfast in
your room if you’d prefer.
Morning
If you’re going on an outing,
you’ll usually get ready to go after
14
breakfast. You’ll travel in one of
our accessible vehicles and have
the support of an experienced care
assistant throughout your trip.
If you’re having a day at Leuchie
House, our guest engagement
team will have organised a morning
activity. It could be a group exercise
class, or arts and crafts, or indoor
games – every day is different!
Afternoon
After a home cooked lunch in
the dining room, it’s time for our
afternoon activity. It might be a
stroll in the grounds, or our own
version of Desert Island Discs, or a
chance to try ice cream making – no
two days are the same.
You might prefer to visit our
physiotherapy suite to use some of
our specialist physio equipment. Or if
you’ve booked one of our therapies
or beauty treatments, you could
have a reflexology treatment, or get
your hair or nails done. Or maybe
you’ll just relax on our sun terrace
and watch the Leuchie wildlife. It’s
entirely up to you!
Evening
Dinner is served at 5.30pm and is
the perfect time to catch up with
other guests and share your stories
from the day. Then it’s time for our
evening entertainment. It could
be live music, a quiz night or a film
evening. There will always be a
great variety of things going on
throughout your stay.
Time for bed
Whether you’re a night owl or like to
be tucked up early, we’ll make sure
you have all the support you need to
get to bed when you like to go. That

Booking, visiting and
day break service
How to book
Come and visit
The first step in booking your Leuchie
break is to get in touch with our
bookings team. You can phone or
email them. They’ll be able to tell you
more about having a break at Leuchie,
the care you can expect from us, and
answer all your questions. They’ll also
do an initial assessment of your care
needs and be able to tell you which of
our price rates applies to you.
If you live within easy travelling
distance of Leuchie, we’d encourage
you to come and visit before you
book. You’ll be able to get a real feel
for what it’s like to stay at Leuchie,
you’ll see the facilities, meet some of
our staff, even try some of our home
baking! Just give us a ring and we’ll
arrange a time for you to visit.
Everyone was so helpful from my initial telephone
enquiry, throughout James’ stay, and when I came to collect
him. He really enjoyed his stay which means so much when
you’re a carer and leave them to cope without you.
Leuchie’s day break service
As well as our residential breaks, we
also have a weekly day break service.
This gives you a chance to get away
from your usual routine for a day
every week, meet new friends and
relax in a different environment.
Day breaks are available Monday
to Thursday every week from
10am to 4pm.

Help with funding
If you need help to pay for your respite break, there are various sources of support
available. Our bookings team have a wide knowledge of the options and can give
you advice on the most appropriate sources depending on your circumstances.
Local authority funding
Many of our guests have their breaks
funded by their local authority
through their annual self-directed
support package. To find out if you
are eligible for respite break funding,
get in touch with your social worker
or occupational therapist to ask for
an assessment. If you have a live-in
partner, they will be eligible for a
carer’s assessment. If you don’t have
a social worker, contact the duty
social worker at your local authority
for advice. There is often a waiting list
for assessments so we recommend
you get in touch with them as soon
as possible.

Charity and benevolent
association support
If you aren’t eligible for local
authority funding, or need it topped
up from another source, there are
a number of charities, trusts and
benevolent associations that may be
able to help you. We’ll be happy to
give you advice on this.
Paying for your
Leuchie break
If you book in advance, there’s no
need to pay for your break in full
when you make the booking. You’ll
pay an non-refundable deposit of
£150 to secure your booking, then
only need to pay the balance six
weeks before your break.
For advice on all the different ways
you can get help to fund your Leuchie
break, phone our bookings team
who’ll talk through the options with
you and be able to point you in the
right direction.
Prices
The cost of your Leuchie respite break depends on the amount of care you need
and the length of your stay. We’ll discuss your care needs with you when you
book and tell you which of the rates applies to you.
These costs include everything you need to have the best
break possible: full board with delicious home made food,
24 hour personalised nursing care, physiotherapy, activities,
outings, entertainment and lots more.
We’ll explain our booking terms and conditions,
including our cancellation policy, to you when you book
and send you a printed copy. You’ll also find these at
www.leuchiehouse.org.uk. We strongly recommend that
you take out cancellation and travel insurance when you
book a break in case your situation changes.
