SOPHOMORE COMMUNITY SERVICE 2016-2017 The Philosophy and Goals of the Service Program Jesuit education assists in the formation of persons who will put their beliefs and attitudes into practice throughout their lives. At Marquette High School we hope that each young man will graduate with a genuine concern for those who suffer in the world. Our service programs help students realize that their talents are gifts to be developed for the good of the human community. They are encouraged to use their gifts in the pursuit of the Jesuit ideal to become “Men for Others.” In order to promote an awareness of “others” Marquette High School has committed to a strong service program. Students are expected to perform a minimum of 140 hours of service during their time at Marquette. These hours are a crucial part of every student’s development in areas of social responsibility and social awareness. Integrity. Faith without action is empty, narcissistic, and usually dull. If there is any message in the Incarnation, it is that God is waiting to be born among those marginalized, uninvited, cold, and tired. When faith- or education- is not about learning to take care of one another, it becomes self-serving, and no longer deserves the moral and financial support from the community. 2. Leadership. MUHS students will encounter a global society that is becoming more competitive, individualistic, and transitory. More than ever, an understanding of servant leadership can draw on the rich biblical heritage of seeking a community that is committed to the common good. It requires leaders who are socially responsible, and have a consciousness of that which divides and belittles people, i.e. bigotry, poverty, and violence. 3. Capacity to be generous. At the heart of Ignatian spirituality is the magis- the more; seeking out and doing God’s will. It is to show them that everyone has unlimited ability to heal, support, listen, entertain, inspire, and encounter Christ in the least among us. 4. Sacramental aspect of service is realizing that no act of kindness, even when it is hidden, unappreciated, or done with mixed motives (as are all service activities), is ever wasted. It matters, simply because there is a belief that there is a holiness that dwells within all life, and any attempt to honor that holiness- such as ensuring that people are treated with dignity- is making the goodness of God a bit more real, a bit more personal. Ultimately, it is discovering that one of life’s greatest treasures is to do what Ignatius kept insisting we ought to do: labor for the greater glory of God. 5. Parent/Guardian Involvement. For many sophomores this will be their first ongoing experience with community service. The MUHS philosophy centers on community support. The sophomore service program relies on parental support through driving the students to the service activities as well as chaperoning activities. A strong community relies on everyone's input; therefore it is a tradition at MUHS for parents to volunteer to help in any way possible. Requirement: Students must complete 12 service hours each semester, 8 of which must be CORE hours. CORE hours are service with an agency that directly serves disadvantaged members of the community. The “disadvantaged’ are those who lack a decent level of health, mobility, companionship, shelter, education, or other basic amenities to living in dignity. The purpose of CORE service is 4 fold: 1. to work with, learn from, and serve people different from ourselves. 2. to cultivate a sense of stewardship 3. to realize that we can and ought to help those who are disadvantaged. It is a mandate coming from Scripture, affirmed in Catholic Social Teaching and lived out as followers of Ignatius. 4. to share the MUHS mission of bringing about a more just and humane society with agencies which share in this aim. The SUPPORT hours are service activities that benefit the community by helping agencies with a religious, educational or charitable mission. The purpose of this part of service is for the students to give something back to the organizations such as their parish, school or youth team that have helped in their formation. *Service hours can not be counted when done outside of the academic calendar. Consequences: Failure to complete your service hours each semester will be grounds for dismissal from MUHS. You will receive a grade of “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory” upon completing your service hours. An unsatisfactory mark during sophomore year means the following: 1. You will be considered for dismissal from MUHS. 2. If you are allowed to continue at MUHS you will need to submit a summer service make-up proposal to Campus Ministry Department (forms can be found on line). 3. Minimum summer service work MUST include: a. 80 CORE HOURS OF WORK b. signed contract by agency you will work for c. verification of completed hours by agency d. 4-5 page typewritten paper that discusses the connection between the Grad at Grad statement and the service work. 4. All criteria must be completed and received by Campus Ministry by August 15th. 5. Failure to satisfactorily complete all of the above will result in dismissal from MUHS. JUGS: Upon signing up for a project students have committed themselves to working that project. Failure to show up for a project will result in 2 JUGS for the first offense. A second offense will result in a Saturday JUG. All subsequent offense thereafter will be Saturday JUGS. The student and the Dean of Students will receive all JUG notifications via email from Mrs. Nunez. If you are unable to fulfill your service commitment (i.e. illness, etc.) you should do the following: a. find a replacement and notify Mrs. Nunez of who that replacement is. b. let Campus Ministry know of the change with the following information: your name & i.d., name and date of project, name & i.d. of student taking your place. c. Unable to find a replacement? Contact Mrs. Nunez via email with your reason you’re unable to attend your service and it will be documented. Failure to do so will result in a JUG. How to Get the Most Out of Your Hours Relax. Many MUHS students have found the service component to be worthwhile, enjoyable, and even transformative. If you want it to be valuable for you as well as the people you serve, it will be. The reverse is also true. As Ignatius kept insisting, think of your deepest desires. Then seek out the good that is waiting for you. Start. The main frustration is when the service component is delayed until late in the semester. The student has to scramble to find whatever opportunity is available. Do yourself a favor and begin in September and January. Our responsibility is to provide service opportunities throughout the semester rather than a mountain of projects at the end. Invest. Putting in a little time and energy early pays off big later. Ask, think, imagine, and check out a listing. Upcoming volunteer activities are posted on line through the x2vol service program found in Naviance. Check it out daily to plan according to your schedule. Many students, however, choose an activity the same way they decide most things: asking people they trust. Realize that you need to initiate this process. Confirm. Programs not on the X2vol Dashboard require an Intent Form. Don't assume all work in parishes, hospitals and other places of hospitality qualifies for core credits or support credits. When in doubt, write it out. See Mrs. Nuñez in the Ministry Center for the Intent Form and have your information available. No project, unless approved before hand, will be awarded credit. How the X2vol service program works: 1. Go to student portal on the MUHS website and sign in using your school email and school password. 2. On the left hand side in blue click on Naviance/x2vol (service). Enter your [email protected] and password again. 3. Family connection page should appear-go to resources (left hand side)-click on x2vol. 4. X2vol will automatically go to the dashboard- this is your front page. 5. Opportunities and Projects tab will have your activity log and “find opportunities” tabclick on “find opportunities” –this is where you can look to find activities and sign up. Double click on an activity (in blue letters) and it will pop up with a description of the activity, where it is located, special instructions, as well as all of the dates of the activity. The sign up bar is located on the right. Once the maximum number of slots is filled (seen under volunteers) then that activity for that particular date disappears from your dashboard. 6. Also on the right hand side of the dashboard page is “my upcoming activities” that will remind you of what you’ve signed up for. You will receive an automatic email to your MUHS email account. Therefore, get back in the habit of checking your MUHS email daily! 7. Hours logged and hours approved-hours logged will increase as you complete a service activity. Hours approved will only increase AFTER the activity has been verified by Mrs. Nunez. How does this happen? YOU need to do the following steps AFTER you perform your service activity: 8. Go back in to your x2vol account and go to your opportunities page and you will have a highlighted area in green on the right to “add hours” and click on that. 9. Scroll down the page to enter hours and minutes worked, continue to scroll down until you check where the hours go to- either Semester 1 2016-CORE or Semester 1 2016SUPPORT 10.Check the box verifying that you are being truthful in your work. 11.Finally-be sure to click “submit” so that it goes to Mrs. Nuñez for approval. 12.Your goal of 12 hours- at least 8 CORE and 4 SUPPORT hours is also tracked by looking at the Groups and Goals page. 12 hours needs to be completed by December 5, 2016. 13.My Calendar page helps you keep track of your service commitment on a regular calendar and also allows you to enter an activity that you participated in that was not already offered through x2vol. (Example: you work a meal program with your parish youth group and would like to enter that for volunteer hours). This type of activity still needs documentation and approval by Mrs. Nunez so please email or contact her BEFORE the activity. Do not assume that every activity you participate in outside of MUHS sponsored activities will be approved for service hours! When in doubt contact the Ministry Center or email Mrs. Nunez at [email protected] 14.You are a member of the Class of 2019. This is the ONLY Group you are in at this time.
