I am happy to welcome you to the 1st Convoca on of the Xavier School of Commerce of Xavier University,
Bhubaneswar.
I am delighted to present the 1stConvoca on Report of the Xavier School of Commerce. We feel blessed as we
con nue to deliver excellent quality educa on comparable to the best, carrying out the mission of inspiring
futures, inspiring future genera ons of students. God's gi s to us are greater than our efforts!
XUB is built on the strong founda on of academic excellence, service excellence with personal values, and

His Excellency
Dr. S. C. Jamir,
Hon'ble Governor of Odisha
Hon'ble Governor of Odisha, Dr. Senayangba Chubatoshi Jamir was sworn in on 21st March, 2013 in the Abhishek
Hall of Raj Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by the Hon'ble Chief Jus ce of Odisha High Court, Jus ce
Chokalingam Nagappan at a solemn func on in Raj Bhavan.
Dr. S. C. Jamir, son of Senayangba Head Dobashi of Mokokchung district, was born on October 17, 1931 at Ungma
village. A er finishing his matricula on examina on, he joined Sco sh Church College, Calcu a to study
Intermediate Arts and from thence to Allahabad University where he completed B.A. and LL.B. in 1958. Dr. S. C.
Jamir was the President of the Students' Chris an Movement at the University from 1954 to 1957 and was
ac vely involved in student and Chris an ac vi es.
He began his poli cal career soon a er his studies. He was elected as the Joint Secretary of the Naga Peoples'
Conven on on 22nd May, 1958. He was one of the signatories to the historic Agreement which is popularly known
as the 16th Point Agreement with the Government of India in 1960 that resulted in the crea on of the State of
Nagaland as the sixteenth State of the Indian Union. He was also a member of the Interim Body of Nagaland.
A er the forma on of the Interim Body, no fica on was issued to elect a person to represent the people of
Nagaland in the Indian Parliament. To him goes the dis nc on of being the first Member of Parliament from the
State of Nagaland.
He was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the First Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in
1962. Later he served as Union Deputy Minister of Railways, Labour and Employment, Community Development,
Coopera on, Food and Agriculture during 1966 and 1970 under Mrs. Indira Gandhi. He was a member of the
Indian Delega on to UNO in 1962 as Poli cal Advisor. He was also a member of the Indian delega on to
Interna onal Labour Organiza on (ILO) at Geneva in 1968. He was the Deputy leader of the Indian delega on to
Interna onal Social Welfare Conference at Manila in 1969.
In 1971, Dr. S. C. Jamir came back to state poli cs through a by-elec on from Mongoya Assembly Cons tuency.
He was elected and entered into the Assembly and since then he has the unique dis nc on of never losing any
Assembly elec on. Between 1974 and 2003, he served the people of Nagaland in different capaci es. He was the
Chief Minister of Nagaland five mes, the longest in the history of Nagaland. Dr. S. C. Jamir is regarded as one of
the architects of modern Nagaland for his outstanding contribu ons to the development of the State.
He was appointed as the Governor of Goa on 17th July, 2004 and served in that capacity ll July 2008. He held the
addi onal charge of Maharashtra. He was then appointed as Governor of Maharashtra and sworn in on 9th
March, 2008 and served ll 22nd January, 2010. During this period, he held addi onal charge of Governor of
Gujarat from 24th July, 2009 to 26th November, 2009.
In recogni on of his dis nguished public service Dr. Jamir was conferred with several pres gious awards such as
Rashtriya Ekta Puraskar by the Commi ee for Na onal Integra on, Na onal Ci zen Award, “Arch of Asia” at
Bangkok, Dis nguished Leadership Award tled Man of the Year 1998 by the American Biographical Ins tute,
USA. He was conferred Doctorate of Divinity (Hon Causa) by the University of Serampore, West Bengal and
Doctor of Literature (Hon Causa) by Nagaland University.
The hallmark of Dr. S. C. Jamir's life has been his dedicated work for the unity and integrity of the country, peaceful
solu on of the Naga poli cal problem with honour and dignity. His life was a empted four mes by the an na onal elements for his steadfast stand for the unity and integrity of the country.

Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand
Chairman-cum-Managing Director,
Na onal Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO)
A Navratna Company of Govt. of India
Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, a highly experienced professional from steel sector, assumed the office of Chairmancum-Managing Director, NALCO – a Navratna CPSU in July, 2015. He is having rich experience in Mining and
Metal Sector, out of which 8 years are at the helm of Affairs as Director in Coal & Steel sector in Maharatna
and Navratna Company.
Under his leadership, NALCO could get complete raw material and energy security for next 50 years & could
achieve the dis nc on of first Indian company to be the lowest cost producer of Alumina in the world. The
new Business Model introduced by him with Corporate Strategy of maximizing produc on & produc vity
coupled with cost reduc on has enabled Nalco to make profit consistently despite global economic
downturn.
For his excellent performance as Execu ve, Dr Chand has received Jawaharlal Nehru Award. Dr Chand has
been conferred “D.Lit, the highest honour ofUtkal University in recogni on for his outstanding contribu on
towards Industry, Business Management & Na on Building.
Hon'ble Governor of Jharkhand conferred him with highest management award 'Ravi J Ma hai Na onal
Fellow Award' cons tuted by Associa on of Indian Management Schools. Times of India has conferred on
him “The Achievers Odisha Award” and Na onal Ins tute of Personnel Management, the Na onal Fellow
Award, 2016.
Dr Chand has been elected as the President of Aluminium Associa on of India. He is the Chairman of
Confedera on of Indian Industry (CII), Odisha. He is the Ex-Officio Member of Board of Director of Industrial
Development Corpora on of Odisha (IDCO) and Member of Scien fic Advisory Commi ee of Govt. of
Odisha. He is also the Chairman of Na onal Mines & Minerals Council of Associated Chambers of Commerce
& Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
Dr. Chand has authored a book named 'ALUMINIUM-The Strategic Metal', well acclaimed by engineers,
entrepreneurs, researchers, educa onists & the corporate world.
As a person, Dr. Chand is kind, compassionate, simple and suave. His accessibility, simplicity and helpful
a tude have endeared him to one and all.

I remember the day when three years ago you all started your academic journey with the inaugura on of this
school. In these three years, all faculty and staff accompanied you and assisted you in your journey. They
stood by you and supported you in your pursuit of academic excellence. They have prepared you for a new
tomorrow.
Now, finally, the day has arrived when you all are going to wear convoca on gowns. This is your day. You
have reached this day through your hard work and perseverance. But, at the same me, please, remember
that this day marks the dawn of a new era in your life.
Some of you will go for higher studies while some others will join corporates or start their business. Please,
share your success stories and stay connected with us. Wherever you are, you will be our ambassadors. You,
being the first batch of alumni, will always command a special posi on in the history of the school.
I take this opportunity to congratulate your parents on your success. I sincerely thank them for reposing

Xavier School of Commerce organized a marke ng symposium on “Digital Marke ng in Emerging
Economies: A Paradigm Shi ” on January 17, 2017. Many eminent resource persons graced the occasion
and delivered talks on the theme. Students presented papers and par cipated in poster compe on on the
main theme of the symposium. Prizes and cer ficates were given to successful par cipants.

SWACHHTA PAKHWADA :
As instructed by His Excellency, The Governor of Odisha, Swachhta
Pakhwada was observed by the students of the school on November 4,
2016. In this special event, students took part with lot of enthusiasm in
various compe ons such as Essay wri ng, best out of waste, Graffi to
drive home the importance of cleanliness in our lives.

MASTER OF BUSINESS FINANCE (MBF):
Xavier School of Commerce, Xavier University Bhubaneswar
announces the launch of Master of Business Finance (MBF)
for students who seek proficiency in the finance domain.
The program aims at helping students sharpen their
conceptual as well as analy cal skills in the areas of financial
decision-making.
The program is spread over a two-year period divided into
four (4) semesters. In the first two semesters, students get
inputs on the basic areas such as Financial Accoun ng,
Financial Management, Corporate Laws, Sta s cs,
Economics, Research Methodology, MIS, Quan ta ve
Techniques and many more. These core courses set the
founda on for more advanced courses such as Project
Planning, Appraisal and Finance, Behavioral Finance,
Financial Modeling, Business Analy cs, Corporate Tax Planning and so on. In the fourth semester students
will be required to opt for the elec ves of their choice. Currently, two sets of elec ve specializa ons are
offered- “Banking and Insurance”, and “Finance”, out of which each student will have to select one. While
the program covers a wide range of courses, “finance” remains the main focus area. The knowledge base of
the students also gets further strengthened by summer projects, immersion courses on current issues,
seminars, workshops and interac on with industry experts.
This program which is a fine blend of theory and prac ce will make the students ready, at the end of two
years, to face the challenges of tomorrow. It is expected that the students will get rewarding career op ons
in the field of Corporate Finance, Merchant Banking, Venture Capital, Investment Advisory Services,
Por olio Management, Forex Advisory Services etc.
