Rapid enrollment growth propels academic facility planning
College officials recently initiated architectural planning and
fund raising for a new academic
facility on the campus of Rochester College. The board approved
the bold step to address a critical
need for classroom space.
“Record enrollments are straining our capacity,” stated Dr. Ken
Johnson, president of the college.
“This is happening in spite of the
fact that we have more evening
and off-site classes than ever before in our history.”
Since 1991, the enrollment of
Rochester College has risen from
257 to over 600, with the most
notable increases occurring since
the college name change in 1997.
Currently, response to both the
traditional and extended learning programs indicates that enrollment likely will pass the 700
mark in the fall.
“By moving full-speed ahead
on this project, we will relieve our
classroom pressures,” stated Dr.
Johnson. “At the same time, we
will be able to serve our students
with the type of quality academic
facilities that are expected in this
day and time.”
Plans for the academic center
include two phases. The first includes one floor for the library
and another for classrooms. The
second includes classrooms, offices, practice rooms, and a performance room for the music department.
“Timing on the two phases will
depend upon funding,” stated Dr.
Johnson. “The first phase is the
most critical since it includes a
number of large multipurpose
classrooms and space for the library, which also has been overflowing for some time.”
The building will be located to
the south of the Associates Campus Center. It will extend from
the west wing of Campus Center
to the west end of the WestsideCentral Auditorium. The campus
master plan calls for a series of
new facilities to be constructed
the entire distance from the academic building to the new residence hall complex.
“We already are in contact with
a number of potential donors,”
noted Dr. Johnson. “This project
will require some major gifts at a
level never experienced by the
college, and will provide a number of naming opportunities. My

major task in the twelve months
ahead is to find funding for this
important project.”
The college has retained the
services of TMP Associates, architects of the college master plan
and new residence hall complex,
to design the academic facility.
TMP is known in the Rochester
community for its exemplary
work on the public library.
“We are very excited as we plan
for another very visible step of
progress for Rochester College,”
stated Dr. Johnson. “While we

Estate planning board embraces $12 million goal
Embracing a key goal in the
college’s new strategic plan, the
Estate Planning Advisory Board
recently accepted a challenge to
take the lead in raising $12 million in endowment for Rochester
College. The board plans to accomplish their goal through estate planning efforts.
“Near the end of the advisory
board’s last meeting, Dean Oliver,
a former student and member of
the group, asked for a sharper
focus on how the board might
provide the most help to the college,” stated Doug Edwards, vice
president for development. “As
discussion ensued, the board became excited about building the
endowment and decided to pursue the $12 million goal.”
Currently, seventeen individu-

the Estate Planning Advisory
Board, including a number of financial planners, attorneys, and
accountants. The board also is
seeking additional members to
assist with their efforts.
Across the nation, endowment
funds provide financial stability
for most academic institutions.
While such funds have grown to a
level of about $1.2 million at Rochester College over the past few
years, those funds must increase
dramatically to provide financial
strength for the college.
Endowment serves as a type of
savings account for most institutions. At Rochester College, proceeds from endowment interest
and investments are used to fund
scholarships and special projects,
to supplement the operating budget, and to further build the endowment fund.
“In particular, we have experienced a noticeable increase in the
establishment of endowed scholarships,” noted Mr. Edwards. “We
now honor major donors to scholarship programs at an annual dinner where the donors meet the
scholarship recipients.”
“A strong endowment is criti-
cal to the future of Rochester
College,” stated Dr. Ken Johnson,
president of the college. “As we
look to the future, however, we
realize that most of our endowment funding will come from estate gifts since most of our fund
raising efforts must be directed
toward the development of new
programs and facilities.”
Rochester College honors individuals and families that include
the college in their estate plan
with membership in the Heritage
Club. Currently over 100 individuals and families have notified the college of their estate
planning arrangements.
“According to fund raising experts, there are ten additional
estate plans in existence for every
one that an institution knows
about,” noted Mr. Edwards. “Consequently, we assume that there
are a lot of other individuals and
families around the country that
have included Rochester College
in their planning .”

will continue to bless our efforts
as we move ahead.”

Mott welcomes CEL degree program
Record growth
presents new
opportunities
for our friends
Dear Friends,
Twelve hundred friends of the college enjoyed a fantastic spring
performance of Celebration 2000, an extravaganza of music and
drama that featured over 100 Rochester College students. This
annual tradition has developed a fine reputation for creative,
uplifting, wholesome Christian entertainment, and is attracting a growing audience that enjoys and appreciates the many
talents of our student body.
We dream of the day when we have a facility of our own that is
adequate to accommodate large productions, rather than having to use a borrowed facility. There is so much more that the
college could do with expanded performance facilities. We have
addressed that in our strategic planning. However, other pressing needs must come first.
Signs indicate that this fall we will break two college records: the
largest freshman class ever and the largest student body ever,
perhaps exceeding 700 students. Every aspect of college operations will be tested this fall as we serve the larger numbers. High
school seniors who apply late may be unable to have on-campus
housing.
To address some of the space challenges, trustees have approved
hiring an architect for a new library/classroom building to be
constructed in 2001-2002. This new facility will improve the
look of the west end of the campus as dramatically as the new
Hoggatt/Ferndale/Dearborn complex reshaped the middle of
the campus.
To continue growth and progress, Rochester College needs
something it has never experienced - gifts of $1 million or more,
to supplement the thousands of smaller gifts that assure operational viability. When those who believe deeply in Christian
education make large financial commitments, those commitments enable the college to take significant and highly visible
steps of progress. Please join me in praying for one or more such
gifts for the new library/classroom complex.
Yours for the Master,
Kenneth L. Johnson

Beginning this fall, the College
of Extended Learning of Rochester College will begin offering a
bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at the Mott University Center in Flint.
Similar to the University Center of Macomb Community College, a number of partner institutions offer bachelor’s degrees at
the Mott location. Rochester College began offering a bachelor’s
degree program in business communication at the Macomb center last fall.
“Based upon the positive response at Macomb, we decided to
check into other centers,” stated
Tracey Hebert, dean of the College of Extended Learning. “Beginning with our first visit, Mott
rolled out the red carpet and gave
us a great reception.”
Upon reviewing degree options
offered by Rochester College, Mott
officials immediately zeroed in on
the early childhood major. Mott
currently has approximately 500
students enrolled in early childhood classes at the freshman and
sophomore level.
“Dan Hodgins, director of early
childhood education at Mott, had
been desiring a bachelor’s degree
program in this area for several
years,” noted Mr. Hebert. “When

early childhood degree provides
specialized training for those planning to pursue a career in early

available on campus. Tracks are
offered for both traditional and
nontraditional students.

Early admission available to juniors
Each year, a select number of
students enroll at Rochester College after the completion of their
junior year in high school. Such
students later receive their high

through satisfactory completion
of the GED test.
“After being in a public school

Tristin Hassel, a freshman from
Clio, Michigan, stated, “I had already completed the honors and
advanced placement courses in
my high school, so I would have
had to spend six hours a day at
school during my senior year taking nothing but electives.”
College officials formally developed the early admission program
in 1974 after two students in the
same situation as Tristin enrolled
at the college and successfully
completed their academic work.
Since that time, the early admission program has served a number of honor students in similar
situations.
“After singing with the Metropolitan Detroit Youth Chorus, I
already knew a lot of people who
were attending Rochester College,” noted Kevin Adamisin, a
freshman from Columbiaville,
Michigan. “I thought it would be
great to start college a year early,
so I enrolled.”
After being admitted to Rochester College under the early admission program, students like
Tristin, Leslie, and Kevin enroll
in the same classes as the rest of
the student body. “Even though
freshman-level general education
courses are similar to classes in
high school, you get better teachers and receive college credit,”
stated Tristin.
“I’m happy to say that this was
the best decision I could have
made,” noted Leslie. “There are
absolutely no regrets. My life has

Addressing another major goal
in the college’s strategic plan, Dr.
Ken Johnson recently announced
plans to begin improvements on
Barbier Hall. Maintenance personnel plan to begin work on the
facility as soon as the spring semester closes.
“For quite some time, we have
struggled with the future of
Barbier Hall,” stated Dr. Johnson.
“While replacement of the facility seems inevitable, we have felt
an urgent need to make improvements in the hall until the time
when we are able to replace it
with new construction.”
Funded by the Grace Barbier
estate, Barbier Hall opened in the
fall of 1961. Students moved into
the facility that fall, even though
it lacked finishing touches. Coach
Bill Shinsky served as the first
supervisor of the dorm.
Workers completed Barbier’s
first renovation during the summer of 1976 along with major
renovation of Palmer Residence

installed new lighting, and carpeted the entire building.
“When our new residence hall

we raised the standard for campus housing considerably,” stated
Dr. Johnson. “Most areas on cam-

The society presented the award
at their annual meeting in Savanna, Georgia, in March.
APS presents the award each

more than two years past completion of their M.D. or Ph.D. This
year, over 100 applicants were
eligible to participate.

about one-third psychologists,”
stated Dr. Stogner. “Members
participate because of their interest in mind and body connections
related to illness.”
Dr. Stogner, who also serves as
a consultant at Genesys Regional
Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, regularly works with cases
involving closed-head injuries,
strokes, and amputation. His submission to the APS dealt with
postconcussion syndrome and the
prediction of personality and illness behavior.
Shortly after receiving notification about the APS award, Dr.
Stogner also learned that two of
his papers had been accepted for
presentation at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association next fall in
Washington D.C.
The first paper to be presented
at the convention is similar to the
work Dr. Stogner submitted to
the APS. The second, coauthored
with Dr. Brad Axelrod, presents a
cross-cultural comparison of patients in Israel.
Last November, Alan Neal,
trends reporter for the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation, interviewed Dr. Stogner about a piece
he had written for an Internet
magazine a few years earlier. The
interview, originally aired in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 1,
appeared in a national broadcast
later that week.
“We are blessed by talented
members of the faculty like Dr.
Stogner,” stated Dr. Ken Johnson,
president of the college. “Our students benefit tremendously from
the background of outstanding
teachers like him.”
Having previously taught at the
University of Michigan in Flint
and on the adjunct faculty of Rochester College, Dr. Stogner joined
the full-time faculty in 1998. An
alumnus of the college, he also

The explosion of information in this Information Age brings
potential for an explosion of knowledge. Yet it also makes
possible rapid distribution of misinformation under the guise of
knowledge. Such misinformation is really nothing more than
background noise in the search for knowledge. The impact on
society, both from greater knowledge and from greater circulation of misinformation, will be revolutionary because this power
to spread background noise at the speed of light has the
potential to pull society apart at the seams.
One of our primary tasks as a Christian college is to give our
young people the tools to sort out truth from background noise.
We teach them to do that by insisting that information has to
pass the test. It has to meet the standard. It has to survive heavy
inquiry from capable and well-prepared examiners before treating it as knowledge.
As our young people become experts at the sorting-out process,
their value to tomorrow’s world and to tomorrow’s church will
increase tremendously.

December graduation develops into major event
Forty-eight graduates marched
across the stage on December 14
as the midyear commencement
established itself as a major event
of Rochester College.
“We initiated the December
graduation last year with seventeen graduates and less than a
hundred in attendance,” stated
Dr. Michael Westerfield, provost.
“In just one year we had to relocate the program in order to accommodate the audience, which
this year grew to about 400.”
“As graduation drew closer, we
kept hearing of graduates in our
program who wanted to bring all
of their relatives,” stated Angela
Hazel, associate dean of the College of Extended Learning. “One
student even had a van load coming from a church in Indiana
where her husband had recently
started preaching.”
Based upon the anticipated size
of the audience, college officials
moved the ceremony from campus to the nearby auditorium of
the Rochester Church of Christ.
The change proved wise since the
crowd did exceed the size of the
campus auditorium.
“There was such a sense of pride
among all the graduates,” stated
Mrs. Hazel. “Everyone wanted
all of those who had supported
them in their efforts to be a part
of the ceremony.”
While college officials developed
the December graduation primarily to serve graduates of the College of Extended Learning, several traditional students discovered that the event met their
needs as well. All but three of the
December graduates received the
bachelor’s degree from Rochester College as the institution continued to move away from associate degree programs.
“The December graduation was
among the most memorable of
my years at the college,” stated
Dr. Ken Johnson, president of
the college. “The fine tone of the
program was positively received
and commented upon by a large
number of persons who have experienced many of our graduations over the years.”
“This new event has exceeded
our expectations,” Dr. Westerfield
noted. “While the spring graduation will remain a focal point for
traditional students, the December event will continue to grow
with our adult programs.”
Why does Rochester College exist? Because of students like Dion Frasier, a
senior ministry major from
Buffalo, New York, and new
youth minister of the West
Carpenter Road Church of
Christ in Flint.
Many of the faculty with doctoral degrees gather with those working on doctorates for a photo at graduation.

Why RC?
Beginning this fall, a Master of
Arts degree in counseling will be
offered on the campus of Rochester College. The degree will be
awarded by Siena Heights University of Adrian, Michigan.
“Every year we have a number
of good students who complete
our bachelor’s degree programs
in psychology and counseling and
decide to stay in this area,” stated
Dr. Ben Noah, associate professor of counseling. “Since many

want to work full-time while pursuing a graduate degree, we began looking for options to help
them meet that goal.”
Since Siena Heights offers degrees in several off-site locations,
Dr. Noah approached their dean,
Dr. Robert Gordon. As a result,
Siena Heights decided to bring
their graduate programs in both
community and school counseling to the campus of Rochester
College.
“We were most impressed by
the similarity of approach to the
educational process between
Rochester and Siena,” stated Dr.
Gordon after his initial visit. Both
institutions value a program that
incorporates spiritual values in
the counseling process.
As part of the formal arrangements, Rochester College will provide classroom space and student
prospects. Courses will be delivered during the evening hours.
Additionally, Siena Heights plans
to use Rochester College faculty
members to teach many of the
courses.
“Siena Heights also plans to
help us develop our library holdings, particularly in the area of
journals,” stated Dr. Noah. “This
will be beneficial not only to the
students in the graduate program,
but to our own undergraduate
students as well.”
Currently, staff from both institutions are working together
to set up class rotations, select
professors, and promote the program. Approximately fifteen current students and alumni already
plan to apply for admission to the
program.
“Our strategic planning calls
for the addition of graduate programs, so this is an important
first step toward that goal,” stated
Dr. Michael Westerfield, provost
of Rochester College. “This arrangement will provide a valuable resource to both the college
and the community.”
In addition to providing
spiritual leadership on campus, Dion has performed
with the A Cappella Chorus and Autumn, and has
served as a host of Celebration and as an assistant in
the residence halls. His
peers named him Mr. Rochester College in 1999.
“Rochester College is definitely a place that excels
academically while placing
a heavy emphasis on the
transforming of lives into
the image of Jesus,” stated
Dion. “The college will continue to be a part of my
daily conversation as I believe it to be a model of true
Christian education.”
Worth Repeating
English majors at Rochester College must complete a senior
writing seminar, which includes an academic or creative writing project. Kerri Morrison chose an autobiography. The following observations are taken from her paper. In addition to
working on her degree at Rochester College, Kerri also serves as
volleyball coach for Birmingham Seaholm High School.
“As I approach my final semester at Rochester College, I am still
in disbelief that I am going to receive a bachelor’s degree. I have
always wanted to graduate from college.
I have always felt deep down that my leaving the University of
Michigan was a disappointment to my parents. Now I will be the
first person in my family to receive a college degree. I know my
parents love and support me, that goes without saying. But
graduating is just important to me. It’s my way of saying to my
parents, you were right. I wish I would have listened to you;
your wisdom was heaven-sent and I ignored it.
When I was young, I thought I knew everything. I did not
consider that the choices I made would have consequences that
would affect my entire life. I did not take advice from those who
talked to God, and I did not listen and learn from those that
know God. But this college helped me change all that.
This college is a very special place. God lives here. He is the light
that shines through all the people that teach and work here. I
have felt His presence and experienced the subtle miracles that
abound in this place. I stopped doubting myself. I finally stopped
asking, “God why me,” and began thanking Him for this
opportunity to truly change my life. His plan for my life has led
me to this place, and the teachers here have helped me finish the
goal I set for myself so long ago.”

Molding Futures ....
Dr. Greg Stevenson, Beth VanRheenen, and Barry Wheeler
Good instructors are at the heart of a quality academic program.
The lives of students at Rochester College are molded not only
through strong experiences in the classroom, but by individual
attention and personal relationships with instructors. Some of
the outstanding faculty members that serve the students of
Rochester College are introduced below.
Excellent writing skills have earned Dr. Greg Stevenson,
professor of religion, space in such publications as the Journal
of Biblical Literature and Restoration Quarterly. Currently, his
doctoral dissertation is under review for possible publication as
a book. Before joining the faculty of Rochester College last fall,
Dr. Stevenson completed degrees at Harding University, the
Harding Graduate School of Religion, and Emory University.
He also taught at Emory’s Candler School of Theology while
completing his doctoral program.
Seventeen years of teaching experience at both the secondary
and college level enrich the classroom experience of students
enrolled in classes taught by Beth VanRheenen, assistant
professor of English. Joining the faculty of Rochester College in
1998, Mrs. VanRheenen previously taught at Harding Academy, Harding University, and Arkansas State University. She
holds degrees from Harding and the University of Texas, and is
enrolled in a doctoral program at Wayne State University.
An alumnus of Rochester College, Barry Wheeler, assistant
professor of physical education, returned to his alma mater in
1989 to teach and coach athletics. While completing his master’s
degree in sports medicine at the United States Sports Academy,
he taught and served as athletic trainer at Mobile Christian

volleyball, basketball, and softball. He has lead his volleyball
teams to two national invitational championships.

Warriors capture second at nationals
Entering the NSCAA national
basketball tournament as the
third-seeded team, the Warriors
of Rochester College captured second place at the association’s annual March event.
“For the first time, the tournament seeding was determined by
a committee,” stated Garth Pleasant, head basketball coach. “Even
though we did not have as good of
a season record as normal, we
entered the tournament with our
highest seed ever.”
While normally determining
seeds based only upon power ratings, the committee this year considered strength of schedule, team
experience at the tournament,
and interviews with competitors.
The Rochester College team rated
high in all areas.
After playing such institutions
as Wayne State, Central Michigan, Saginaw Valley, and Grand
Valley State during regular season play, the Warriors rebounded
near the end with wins over
NSCAA rival St. Mary’s College
and the University of MichiganDearborn.
Leading throughout their first
game in the national tournament,
the Warriors defeated Northern
Maine Technical College 96-73.
The next day, the Warriors came
from behind during the last two
minutes and won over Madaille
College of Buffalo, New York.
“In the third round, we played
our best defensive game of the
year,” stated Coach Pleasant. As
a result, the Warriors posted a 6948 victory over San Jose Christian College of California, who
had already defeated Northwest
Christian College, the two-time
defending champion.
In the final game of the tournament, the Warriors faced Kansas
Wesleyan University. “We had a
couple good runs during the second half, but it was not enough,”
noted Coach Pleasant. The Warriors fell 58-69. Powerhouse Kansas Wesleyan had previously
missed a spot in the NAIA tournament by one only point.

College hosts tourneys
Rochester College once again
hosted national invitationals for
the NSCAA last fall. Teams from

“Since many colleges participate in all three tournaments,
most prefer to schedule them all

eliminating them from the final
tournament brackets. “Like most
of our season, we normally controlled the field, but lacked depth
for adequate scoring,” stated
Coach Kurt Fleischhut.
The men’s cross country team
won their competition with institutional record-breaker Caden
Ruohomaki taking first place in
the race. Both Caden and Jim
Primeau received NSCAA AllAmerican honors.
Others earning All-American
honors included volleyball players Lynsay Kwasnik and Tiffany
Burghdorf. Gregg Sadowski was
named to the All-American team
in soccer.
“Athletic competition plays a
major role in student life at Rochester College,” stated Dr. Ken
Johnson, president of the college.
“We look forward to expanding
such opportunities once we are
able to construct a new athletic
center and make further improvements in the athletic fields.”

Second generation enrollment continues to grow Alumni News
Second generation enrollment
at Rochester College hit another
record during the current academic year as forty-eight sons and
daughters of former students enrolled for classes.
“My parents talked about the
college a lot as I was growing up,
so I always wanted to attend,”
stated Megan Graham, daughter
of Todd and Connie (Kinser) Graham, class of 1971. “I feel con-
nected since my parents have done
many of the things that I now do
on a daily basis.”
Since 1979, nearly 250 secondgeneration students have followed
in the footsteps of one or both
parents by enrolling at Rochester
College. While many have grown
up in Midwestern states, others
have traveled to Michigan from
such places as Massachusetts,
Tennessee, Arizona, Texas, Min-
nesota, Maryland, Colorado,
Florida, and West Virginia.
“I feel a sense of gratitude that
my child can experience life on
campus similar to what I did many
years ago,” stated Dean Oliver,
class of 1973. “Whenever I pull
away from campus, I have a sense
of comfort and security knowing
that my children will be urged to
do what is right.”

former student who had written
a note about her son attending
Rochester College next fall, an
employee recently checked the
second generation list. He discovered that eighteen of that person’s
classmates already had children
attending this year.
“Coming to the campus for reunions when I was little helped
me decide early that I wanted to
come here,” stated Kim Burgess,
daughter of Terry and Sue
(Bertch) Burgess, class of 1976.
“A lot of my friends are the sons
and daughters of people that were
friends of my parents.”
Second generation students
find that they have a lot in common with each other. Many are
active participants in campus life.
This year, one served as a host for
Celebration, several sing in the
chorus, some play on the intercollegiate teams, while others perform with small groups like Autumn, Spectrum, Company, and
the Jazz Band.
“My mom sang in Autumn and
my dad was a host for Celebration,” stated Brett Cummins, son
of Gary Cummins, class of 1978,
and Sherry (Taylor) Cummins,
class of 1979. “When performing
with the chorus on our last tour,
it was a great feeling to have my
dad come up and sing with me at
the close of the program.”

Children from around the nation soon will be playing with an
action figure designed by Jeff
Clark, an alumnus of Rochester
College. Sandy Beaches, the newest addition to the Rescue Heroes
series by the Fisher-Price division of Mattel, is scheduled to hit
toy stores in April.
“I have always loved action figures and have always wanted to
work in the toy industry,” stated
Mr. Clark, a 1996 graduate with a
degree in marketing. “With that
goal in mind, I focused my studies
at Rochester College on marketing to children.”
“For my business ethics class, I
wrote on the ethics of marketing
to children,” Mr. Clark noted. “I
made a video on the marketing of
television-inspired toys for another class, and designed a toy
line for a directed study.”
Mr. Clark accepted a management position with Mattel soon
after graduation. At a recent toy
fair, someone suggested that he
submit some designs for the Rescue Heroes line, so he submitted
twenty-four characters.
“To my surprise, I soon learned
that one of my characters had
been accepted for development
and another was under consideration,” stated Mr. Clark. “Sandy
Beaches is a lifeguard with big
bare feet so he can stand easily for
the little ones.”
“Unfortunately, in recent years
the action figure category has
been populated by figures of scant-
ily-clad women, horrific monsters,
and ultra-violent heroes,” Mr.
Clark continued. “I was very excited when Fisher-Price introduced a line of positive role models like firemen, construction
workers, and astronauts.”
The new line of action figures
has been so successful that it has
spawned a new CBS animated
cartoon. Sandy will be available
to become part of the Rescue Heroes Chrome Team.
“As for the other character, well
I can’t talk about him yet,” Mr.
Clark concluded. “He is still under consideration!”

Practicing What I Preach in Estate Planning
My wife, Janet, and I recently went through an estate planning
process. Years ago we put together a crude homemade will when
we were traveling overseas to have something in place. However, there never seemed to be a convenient time to look at how
we could be better stewards of what God has provided in our
lives. This is something we should all seriously review.
The Edwards’ estate is quite small and it would be easy for us
to say “why bother.” However, as we sat down with Dean Oliver,
a financial planner, and Bob Perry, an attorney, we began to see
that we have more in our estate than we had thought. We have
some equity in our home, a life insurance policy, retirement
annuities, and miscellaneous other things.
Dean Oliver suggested that we take a few dollars from what we
are now giving to charitable organizations to buy a wealth
replacement insurance policy. This would allow us to pass along
a gift equivalent to the size of our estimated final estate tax-free
to our children and then still leave a significant estate gift to
Rochester College and several other charities. A revocable trust
was then set up to make everything work to best advantage.
Now is the time to begin thinking about your estate and how
you can be a good steward of your assets. Call us at 800.521.6010
(option 4) to speak to someone about estate planning.

Summer series planned for churches
Providing a valuable service to
churches in the northern region
of the United States, Rochester
College will host a series of four
training programs this summer.
Each will focus on ways to build
stronger churches.
The Midwest Sermon Seminar,
which last year drew participants
from fourteen states and three
countries, will take place on May
15-18. Carl Holladay of Emory
University, Carson Reed of Indianapolis, Indiana, Andre Resner
of Abilene Christian University,
and John York of Lipscomb University will center lessons around
the theme Autobiography in the
Pauline Epistles.
“Recognizing the quality of our
program and caliber of our seminar speakers, ACU Press recently
announced that the first in a series of books on biblical preaching would be based on last year’s
seminar,” stated Dr. David Fleer,
program coordinator. “There is
the possibility that the entire series of six books will be based
upon the seminar.”
On June 2-3, George Oliver,
director of the Human Resources
Program at Harding University,
will be the featured speaker at
the Jim Wood Church Leadership Seminar. The seminar is
named in honor of Jim Wood,
who served as an elder with Mr.
Oliver at the Royal Oak Church
of Christ for many years.
In addition to sessions by Mr.
Oliver, six successful leaders from
the local area will address church
growth strategies. Those include
Vernon Boyd, Mark Brackney,
Jim Larsen, David Parks, Zachary
Pope, and Jerry Tallman.
Running concurrent with the
Leadership Seminar on June 3,
Dr. Michael Westerfield, Vikki
Bentley, and Lynne Stewart, all
of Rochester College, will present
a morning workshop for Bible
class teachers. Special sessions
will focus on teaching methods
for various age groups.
Rounding out the summer, the
Zoe Group of Nashville, Tennessee, will present a seminar on
August 11-12. While focusing on
their mission of fostering wor-
ship renewal in the lives of individuals and churches, the group
also will present special sessions
on church leadership and the
planting of new churches.
Sponsored thus far by eight
congregations from Michigan,
Ohio, and Indiana, the seminar
will feature Randy Gill and Larry
Bridgesmith, alumni from Nashville, Tennessee, and Jeff Walling
of Charlotte, North Carolina.
“By providing specialized programs for preachers, church leaders, Bible class teachers, and worship leaders, we hope to equip
individuals with better tools to
serve in their local communities,”
stated Elton Albright, director of
church relations.
Participants in last year’s Midwest Sermon Seminar visit a book table.
Associates tap into on-line shopping
Tapping into current trends in
on-line shopping, the Associates
of Rochester College recently announced participation in the Shop
and Support program. By shopping on-line through the Shop
and Support site, individuals can
divert a percentage of their purchases to the college at no additional cost to themselves.
“We now have the easiest and
most fun way ever to make money
for the Associates,” stated Ann
Luchsinger, coordinator of the
program. “You do not have to
bake anything, plan ahead, or
even leave the house.”
Currently, over 100 shopping
Getting Started
To use the Shop & Support program, follow these simple steps:
• Log onto www.shopandsupport.com.
• Enter Associates of Rochester College when asked for your
particular nonprofit organization. For state and city, use
Michigan and Rochester.
• Confirm the organization by clicking the college name when
it appears on the next screen.
• Enter your e-mail address when requested. Shop & Support
will not use or sell your address. This simply will enable the
Associates to contact you in the future.
• Choose an on-line retailer from more than 100 choices. Make
sure the name of the Associates appears in the red bar at the
top of your screen once you are on the retailer’s site. You are
now ready to place an order. The Associates will receive a
percentage of any purchases you make.
sources, including many major
retailers, participate in the Shop
and Support program. Once an
individual enters a retailer’s web
site from the Shop and Support
platform, they have full access to
that company’s entire line of products and services.
“Shop and Support is the easiest fund raising effort I have ever
seen,” stated Sharon Whitlatch,
president of the Associates. “Everyone should share this information with their family, friends,
and co-workers.”
Most participating sources donate anywhere from three to nineteen percent of a sale to a nonprofit organization like the Associates. Some offer as much as 48%.
Available products include everything from clothing, gift items,
flowers, and toys to greeting cards,
cosmetics, office products, and
auto parts.
“I have tried out this program,
and it works great,” stated Mrs.
Luchsinger. “One of my purchases
came the next day, and all of them
within a week.”
A complete listing of participating retailers can be obtained
at www.shopandsupport.com.
Important instructions for using
the program correctly are included on the left.
For more information or questions about the Shop and Support
program, contact Mrs. Luchsinger
at [email protected].

“For quite some time, we had
been experiencing a noticeable
increase in the number of families making sizeable gifts to the college,” stated Doug Edwards, vice president for development. “Consequently, we felt it would be appropriate to recognize those individuals with a
new club, and then restructure the other clubs into fewer categories.”
Prior to 1999, the Trustee’s Alliance honored all individuals and organizations giving over
$5,000 per calendar year. Now, those giving in amounts over $10,000 per year are honored
by a new club, referred to as the Challenge Alliance. “Even though gifts of every size are
important to the college, large gifts will be required for us to meet many of the challenging
goals of our next capital campaign,” stated Mr. Edwards.
Nationwide, over 1,000 employers continued to match employee gifts during the past year.
Rochester College received matching gifts from
fifty-eight companies, totaling an impressive
$143,613 of the college’s gift income. “Many

Celebration produced in larger facility
Celebrate Power served as the theme for Celebration in Song as the students and
employees of Rochester College presented their 23rd annual production on March 17-18. In
order to accommodate larger crowds and to provide more stage room for performers, the
college produced the show in the auditorium of the Rochester Church of Christ.
As usual, creativity marked the production as the
campus social clubs developed the theme by teaching
subtle lessons with an abundance of humor. Hi-tech
sound and lighting effects, enhanced by the new location, gave the production a new flair.

Education program takes major step
Officially launching the process
that will enable the college to
certify teachers through the state
of Michigan, Rochester College
recently entered into a mentoring
agreement with Madonna University of Livonia, Michigan.
“For years, we have desired to
provide all the training required
for students preparing to teach,”
stated Dr. Ken Johnson, president of the college. “We are now
at the point where that dream
will soon become reality.”
Rochester College initiated a
cooperative program with Madonna in 1996 through which students have been able to complete
both teaching majors and teacher
certification. That program has
allowed students to complete approximately three years of their
work at Rochester College before
finishing at Madonna, while remaining on the campus of Rochester College the entire time.
Since starting the cooperative
program, Rochester College has
added certifiable majors at the
bachelor’s degree level in English,
music, and history. In Michigan,
students desiring to teach must
obtain a certifiable major and then
obtain their teacher credential
along with that major.

gin the process for providing certification as well,” stated Dr. Mike
Westerfield, provost.
“The state requires applicants
desiring a program for certification to have a mentor that presently serves as a teacher training
institution,” Dr. Westerfield continued. “Naturally we decided to
approach Madonna because of our
present arrangements with the
cooperative program.”

Kimball has chaired several committees that visit campuses on
behalf of the state during the approval process.
“This fall, we will begin offering the freshman-level classes,”
stated Dr. Westerfield. “At first,
each institution will teach about
a third of the courses, and the last
third will be covered by student
teaching. As we continue through
the process for about five years,
Rochester College will assume
more classes each year.”
While all courses will be offered
on the campus of Rochester College, Madonna will recommend
credentialing to the state as the
mentoring process begins. Eventually, that process will transfer
to Rochester College.
“We expect education to develop as our largest program on
campus,” noted Dr. Westerfield.
“Last year, over half of our incoming class indicated an interest in education.”
“The projected teacher shortage over the next decade is tremendous,” Dr. Westerfield continued. “In light of that fact, we
anticipate our education program
meeting a strong interest of our
students as well as an important
need in our society.”
