Mount Sacred Heart School Middle School Summer Reading List
2014-2015
Students are to select 2 books, one fiction and one non-fiction, from the given list.
Students must then choose a project to do on one of the selected books. All projects will
be presented orally to the class within the first two weeks of school. Students should be
prepared to be chosen to present on any given day. A short written assessment will be
given during the second week of school on the second selected book.
Projects:
*Continuation
Write a continuation of the plot. What would happen if the story had not ended where it
did? Continuations must be at least one page typed (1.5 pages hand-written) and include
at least two characters.
*Book Report
Write a report summarizing the important aspects of the story. Reports must be at least
one page typed (1.5 pages hand-written) and include major elements such as characters,
setting, etc..
*Diary
Create daily diary entries as one of the characters in the story. Entries should show the
personality of the character and cover the period of one week (7 entries). Each entry
should be a minimum of eight sentences.
*Magazine Advertisement
Create a magazine advertisement for one of the books. The ad must include original
artwork showing understanding of the plot (no computer printouts), the title and author,
a short description or tagline, and critic reviews/ratings. Be creative!
*Diorama (Rising 6th graders only)
Create a shoe box diorama of an important scene from the story. Attach a 3” x 5” index
card describing the scene and why it was important to the story as a whole.
