Wentworth purchases knoll adjacent to the San Marino Ranch of Henry E. Huntington to build his “dream hotel.” 27 cottages are built surrounding hotel to accommodate longterm guests. Painter Frank Moore is hired by Stephen W. Royce to create 41 California Murals for the property’s redwood footbridge. The Huntington Hotel Rose Parade Float Multimillion-dollar restoration project initiates with the intent of returning the hotel to its original elegance. 1911 Henry Huntington purchases Hotel Wentworth. 1907 Landscape Architect William Hertrich designs and develops The Japanese Garden and The Horseshoe Garden. Hotel Wentworth Opens on February 1 (one month late), with a temporary roof above the 4th floor and several rooms still unfurnished. Heavy rains fall in the Hotel’s first season resulting in several leaks and small income. Hotel Wentworth closes its doors indefinitely on July 2 and proceeds into bankruptcy. Image courtesy Pasadena Museum of History 1914 Hotel officially re-opens as The Huntington Hotel on January 8 with Daniel M. Linnard, father-in-law of Stephen W. Royce, serving as Hotel Manager. 1986 Investing partnership Huntington Hotel Associates purchases the Hotel with plans to demolish and replicate the main building to retain its architectural integrity while meeting modern standards for structural safety. 1954 Stephen W. Royce sells the hotel to the Sheraton Corporation and it is renamed the Huntington Sheraton Hotel. Mr. Royce remains the hotel’s General Manager. 1969 Stephen W. Royce retires at the age of 77. 1918 1923-1969 The California Hotel Company purchases the Huntington Hotel. Stephen W. Royce presides as General Manager of the property. Langham Hospitality Group purchases the hotel and re-flags it The Langham Huntington, Pasadena. Langham invests millions into updating the spa, The Royce Wood-Fired Steakhouse, The Tap Room and five of the hotel’s eight cottages. Core test showed Hotel possesses only 1/4 the structural strength required by modern standards. A special election is called due to the debate between demolition and replication versus renovation. The plans are approved with a 58% majority. 1991 The hotel reopens as The Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel.
