Geography
During this topic we will develop the children’s awareness of using world maps, atlases and globes to identify
the United Kingdom and the countries involved in the Space Race. We will use Google Earth and aerial
photographs to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features. Through this the children will
then develop their understanding of the key Geographical vocabulary.
Geographical vocab –key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean,
river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather.
Geographical vocab – key human features, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port,
harbour and shop.
Cross-curricular ICT – use of Google Earth.
Developing children’s awareness of E-Safety and will be joining the
rest of the Key Stage department for an E-safety week.

Literacy

Maths:
 Continuing to punctuate sentences with capital letters and full stops.
 Using adjectives, nouns and verbs in sentences and understanding the meaning of these
terms.
Continued practise of adding the endings –ing, –ed and –er to verbs where no change
is needed to the root word.
Number-Place Value: Recognize odd and even numbers. Locate 2-digit numbers on a 100 square and
identify the tens and the ones. Make 2-digit numbers using coins.
Year 2:
 Understanding of homophones.
Year 2: Place halves on a number line.
 Using expanded noun phrases.
Number -Addition and Subtraction: Recall doubles to 10 and re-cap addition and subtraction facts for
numbers up to 10. Learn number facts to 20 and use number facts to solve word problems. Add a 1digit number by counting on from a 2-digit number. Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number.
Find 1 and 10 more/less than any number below 100.
Letters and Sounds: we will continue working on phase 5 – this will be introducing new
graphemes for the phonemes we already know. The children will practise reading them in
words and writing them in words. The children will also be learning to spell phase 5 tricky
words.
Year 2: Revise doubles and corresponding halves to 15. Find halve of odd and even numbers to 30.
Count in halves and quarters. Add money using knowledge of 10s and 1s.
Number-Multiplication and Division: Re-cap early multiplication using knowledge of ‘lots of’.
Handwriting: we will continue to develop the children’s ability to form the letters in the
correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place. The children will also continue to
be introduced to joins. They will try to incorporate these into their writing in literacy
lessons.
Year 2: Counts in 2s, 5s and 10s to solve multiplication problems. Record 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Write
Speaking and Listening: The children will take part in role play . They will develop their
multiplications that go with arrays. Multiply by 3 and 4. Use the division sign.
Geometry (property of shapes/measurement): Find ½, ¼ and ¾ of shapes. Begin to know that 2 halves
and 4 quarters make a whole. Relate unit of time weeks, days and hours. Read and write times to the
hour and have a notion of how long an hour and a minute is. Tell the time to o’clock and half past on
analogue and digital clocks. Measure using uniform units.
Year 2: Recognize ½s, 1/4s, 1/3s, 2/3s of shapes. Tell the time to the nearest quarter of an hour using
analogue and digital clocks. Understand the relationship between seconds, minutes and hours. Use a
tally chart to interpret a pictogram and bar graph. Recognize £5, £10 and £20 notes
