Miracles in the Making Spring 2015 A Publication of Miracle Hill Ministries A Grace-Filled Path to God Dana Rucker’s journey to the Lord began quite ordinarily. He got married, had a couple of children, and worked hard at his job. But as he grew older, Dana’s life took a slow turn in the wrong direction. His marriage crumbled. He partied at clubs. He experimented with drugs. And before Dana knew it, he was a functional addict. Homeless and separated from his family, Dana came to hear about the Miracle Hill Greenville Rescue Mission from a friend. “I’ll just grab a few good meals and some sleep before I hit the streets again,” Dana thought to himself. However, that time in and out of the Mission would begin to transform his life forever. As months passed, Dana’s eyes slowly opened to small moments of grace. He developed deep friendships with godly counselors. He received compassion and forgiveness when he deserved hostility. “The thing about the Mission is you’re going to hear about God,” Dana recalls. “And I was listening.” But he wasn’t just hearing about Christ’s love—he was seeing it all around him. Through the Mission and the Overcomers program, the gospel began to penetrate Dana’s heart. One night he was asked to share his testimony. As Dana began talking about all the Lord had carried him through, he felt the power of God for the first time. Words of truth and authority flew out of Dana’s mouth as he became the voice of an eternal message. And when he looked up, fourteen men were down on their knees, crying and accepting Christ into their hearts. Dana was bewildered! He still didn’t understand what had happened, but he knew he felt God in that moment. And he knew he was called to preach the gospel. Many years have passed since those faith-filled days, but Dana is more excited than ever to share what God has done in his life. Besides finding freedom from addiction and completing several college degrees, Dana is now reconciled with his wife and building church communities across South Carolina. “God used Miracle Hill Ministries to change my life,” Dana proclaims. “The path that He’s taken me down—I wouldn’t change it. I look around and I see Him still working… and I just want to be a small part of that.” We’re excited to see how many others will walk a path to God because of clients like Dana who can’t help but share the Good News. But through hard work and the gospel, many leave Miracle Hill as productive members of society who have something powerful to contribute to the world: Hope. We believe they can find the fresh start they so desperately need through people like you! Consider Becoming a Foster Parent Remember your high school graduation? Forty-two years later, I sort of remember. I was Valedictorian, my friend Johnny, Salutatorian—easy honors when the senior class size at the children’s home was two. As important as the achievement, it meant more to hear my parents say “we’re proud of you”. placed elsewhere, in Pickens - 55%. Miracle Hill operates three children’s homes. But even when residential facilities are available, children usually do better in families. If possible, children should live in a family, and maintain school and friend relationships until they reunite with their birth families. My parents who served on staff at Miracle Hill celebrated with me. I think Johnny’s older brother came back for it. His younger brother was there: he, too, lived at the children’s home. With every ball game, art project, and school test, children need someone to say “you can do it” and “I’m proud of you”. They need love, relationship and stability. But many children lack that support. Please consider becoming a foster parent for children in your community. “Pure and undefiled religion . . . is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress.” James1:27. Children who experience abuse or neglect are often removed from their birth families for a time, and there aren’t enough local placements. This spring 316 children are currently separated from their families in Greenville County, but only 145, 46%, can be cared for in-county. That means that 54% are cared for in other counties. A child experiences trauma when removed from their family and unnecessary additional trauma when they also lose their school and teachers, friends, familiar surroundings, and extended family. A child 100 miles from home is unlikely to be visited by anyone. In many upstate counties, more than half the children in foster care are cared for out-of-county. In Spartanburg, 52% are Reid Lehman President/CEO Opening your home and your heart is an exceptional sacrifice, and for a Christian, one of the purest expressions of your faith. Invite your friends to join you. We’d like to add 50 foster families this year to the 100 currently serving. As a foster family with Miracle Hill, you can also support the reunification of children with their birth families. What a wonderful picture this can be of Christ’s redemptive power as He uses us to help support healing and wholeness in families. Enabling the miracle of hope! Through a Christ-centered and caring, relationship driven-approach, Miracle Hill enables a fresh start for children, adults and entire families. (If in-home foster care isn’t an option, consider a longterm mentoring relationship with a child in foster care through Fostering Great Ideas, an upstate nonprofit partner, or talk with us about ways you can support other foster families in your community.) Foster parenting is a beautiful manifestation of the gospel. If you are interested in opening your heart to a child in need, please visit our website or contact Lindsey Hesketh at 864.605.6097 or [email protected]. Educational Achievements Across the Ministry continue their educational goals, secure gainful employment, and receive training in a multitude of Independent Living Skills. Aaron struggled with grief and loss when he arrived in our care, but through the help of mentors, teachers, and a community of supporters around him Aaron has since earned his diploma and secured a wonderful local job. We are proud to offer educational programs in both our Adult and Children’s Ministries at Miracle Hill. Whether through tutoring, computer labs, assessments, or GED classes, our educational support not only helps our clients gain knowledge to thrive in society, but also encourages them to believe they can achieve greatness… and be defined by more than their past. To witness Aaron’s growth and hard work in the classroom is such a testament to the way Christ has worked on his heart. Although receiving a high school diploma might seem insignificant to many, Aaron’s now able to view himself as a smart kid with so much to offer the world. For someone who felt alone and unvalued months before, that is the biggest miracle of all. What’s New? Chick-fil-A of Haywood Road sold 275 Miracle Hill meals for our clients. As a part of the promotion, the Haywood store matched that number, totaling the number of meals—just at this location—to 550! All meals were delivered to our Greenville shelters. Thank you! For more stories of inspiration in our community, check out the Volunteer Spotlight on our website and blog. Each month, a volunteer from one of our shelters tells the story of their journey to Miracle Hill and what the Lord has been teaching them in the process. What an amazing way to honor the people who desire nothing but to spread the love of Christ! If you are interested in reading more about our volunteers—or wish to volunteer—visit www.MiracleHill.org. Miracles in the Making Upcoming Events Interim HealthCare Miracle Hill Challenge ~ Saturday, June 6, 2015 Join us at Furman University to ride, run or walk in this family-friendly event to help raise funds for the homeless and hurting of Upstate South Carolina! We have arranged five different route options for adults and kids alike; and for the first time each participant will receive a personal fund-raising page, making raising money that much easier. Last year alone, the Challenge fundraiser raised nearly $190,000 dollars in much needed support for Miracle Hill’s adult and children’s homeless shelters! Registration is open and will continue through the day of the event. Interim HealthCare MIRACLE HILL CHALLENGE Spartanburg “Hearts for the Homeless Walk” ~ Sunday, September 20, 2015 In an effort to create greater awareness of the impoverished population around us, participants will start at Barnet Park in downtown Spartanburg and walk by many of the places where the homeless live, seek help, and even worship—including our very own Spartanburg Rescue Mission. Miracle Hill will also welcome partnering organizations to the walk in order to give participants an understanding of the complexity of homelessness. We hope to demonstrate that when people and organizations work together, we can make a difference for the homeless in our community! For more information or to register for an event, please visit our website or contact Sandy at [email protected] or 864-631-0137. Planned Giving One way to support Miracle Hill Ministries’ mission is by leaving us a bequest. A bequest is a gift made to charity in your will or trust. One significant benefit of making a gift by bequest is that it allows you to continue to use the property you will leave to charity during your life. Another benefit is that by making a bequest you are able to leave a lasting legacy. There are a number of ways you can make a bequest to Miracle Hill. You can leave what is called a specific bequest. A specific bequest involves making a gift of a specific asset such as real estate, a car, other property or a gift for a specific dollar amount. For example, you may wish to leave your home, $10,000 or a specific percentage of your overall estate. Another kind of bequest is called a residual bequest. A residual bequest is a bequest that is made from the balance of an estate after the will or trust has given away each of the specific bequests. A common residual bequest involves leaving a percentage of the residue of the estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 30% of the residue of your estate to Miracle Hill.
