WELCOME
maurice galway, ceo Dingle international film festival
Welcome to the 7th Dingle International Film Festival
and thank you for being part of this year’s exciting line up.
Welcome to all our wonderful guests for making it here to Dingle
to share with us their talent and their films.
Welcome to all our animators, some of the top names in the
business are here and we aim to make this an annual gathering
along with the Murakami Award, which will be given this year to its
name sake, Jimmy T Murakami for his lifetime achievement in
animation.
Welcome to our short filmmakers, we had a huge amount of
submissions this year and as a result we have a great shorts line
up.
Be sure and check out our ticket bundle deals this year, real value
for the times we live in - rock it up, mellow in the novels put to
screen or the shorts where greatness begins all wrapped up in
these great packages.
Dingle will play a big role on the screen this year with our Bank
Holiday screenings all having a strong Dingle connection and will
close with a tribute to the great Páidí Ó Sé.
My thanks to the beautiful Pauline Bewick for creating the Yellow
Man painting for our festival image this year.
Dingle IFF is very much about bringing and attracting creative
individuals to this extraordinary part of the world. Its because of
this, a special energy is created during the festival, like a beautiful
rich soup which you can dip your spoon in to taste or take your fill
and leave here satisfied and, we hope, inspired!
Welcome to Dingle, its what makes us different!

The mothers of the femicide victims of Juarez, mexico, have been abandoned by
their government - they have engaged the artist Brian maguire to bring their stories
to the international community. art has become the last weapon available to them
to fight the drug cartels and serial killers. Only 2% of these murder cases have been
investigated and many of the mothers have themselves received death threats for
simply demanding justice.
Blood rising is a celebration of beauty through art and a revelation of the power
of the human spirit to rise out of the most extreme and destructive situations.
its role is to honor the spirit and energy of the dead and to contextualize and
understand the destruction of these lives and the mark it has left on the community.

Luke Haines is often described as one of the great English
contemporary songwriters, a man who launched Britpop
and jumped ship as soon as it set sail. His wry commentaries
respect few boundaries and his musical arrangements are
uniquely suited to both the worlds of music and film.
Art Will Save The World explores the work, legacy, struggles,
battles and the future of this perennial outsider of Britpop
and the British music scene.

Presented with our industry partner The Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán Na hÉireann
The discussion is free and open to all those willing to make a documentary film.
‘the next Step up’ is a panel discussion aimed at short filmmakers
and will immediately follow the screening of Art Will Save the World.
The panel discussion will be based on a filmmaker’s possible ‘Next Step’
in approaching a documentary feature film. We appreciate some film
makers are not aiming to make a feature and shorts are a wonderful
art form in their own right. This discussion will focus on moving from
making short films to a feature documentary film. The panel is made up
from a selection of the directors/producers in attendance at this year’s
festival and who have a feature film selected to screen at the festival
this year.
The event is also a great opportunity to get to know fellow filmmakers
attending the festival.

An animated documentary about repair and

hand painted furniture is often associated with hard times, with poverty
and with a time many would rather forget. Because of this association
much of the country’s furniture heritage lies abandoned in barns and

Israel is their home,
Syria their homeland.
Neither is paradise.
The epic story of a village turned prison full of rappers,
rockers and regimes, salsa dancers, holy men and
dead fish, traitors, lovers, freedom fighters and their
heartbroken mothers all set to the background of the
revolution raging across the border in their homeland
Syria as it creeps through the orchards towards them
in israel.
it has been 45 years since israel captured the region
and cut the village of majdal Shams from its homeland,
Syria. Before the Six Day war, this arab village was one
of 139 in the region. all but five were destroyed.
The film’s narrative is made up of a multitude of
characters that together convey the complex nature
of their existence. what unfolds is a story of death,
separation, war, torture, mines, love, nationalism
and apples.
The apple trees are what root them to the land.
The apples are the people’s bombs.

THE MURAKAMI
AWARD
Showcase of Jimmy’s work including an exclusive screening of The Good Friend
The festival is delighted to be presenting the inaugural MURAKAMI AWARD to the great Jimmy T. Murakami.
It may seem surprising that a Japanese American is one of the great European animators, but with a track
record in Europe stretching back the best part of three decades, Jimmy T. Murakami is very much a part of the
European scene. Born in California, he has spent much of his life based either in Dublin or London.
Following a course in Choinard Art Institute, Los Angeles, Jimmy joined
the uPA Burbank Studio in 195. He moved to New York to join the Pintoff
Studio, where one of his films was the Oscar nominated The Violinist.
Through the 0’s Jimmy worked in London for TV Cartoons and
established Murakami Wolf Films in California; throughout this time
producing and directing and work including: The Insects and Charlie
(BAFTA winner and Gold Award Venice Film Festival), The Breath (Annecy
Grand Prix), The Magic Pear Tree (Oscar nominated), And of Course You
(Golden Eagle Award Winner) and The Good Friend.
In 1971 he set up Murakami Films in Dublin, producing both live and
animated TV commercials. In 1980 in Los Angeles, he directed a live action
feature film Battle beyond the Stars - a space version of The Seven Samurai
- for cult producer Roger Corman.
In 198 he was the supervising director on one of the best-loved animated
films ever - the Oscar nominated and BAFTA winning TVC animation
special The Snowman. In 1987 he went on to adapt and direct another
Raymond Briggs book for TVC with When the Wind Blows, Grand Prix
Feature Film Winner Annecy 1987.
Recently he worked as director of a series of 1 half-hour programmes of
The Story Keepers for Shepherd Films, Dublin ITV and Fox Network and half hours of Inspector Mouse, produced by Alegro Animation in Dublin
and PMMP in Paris.
Christmas 1998 saw the screening of his work as director, Oi Get off Our
Train. Made by Varga/TVC in London.
Jimmy T. Murakami has completed directing a new feature film version of
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol-The Movie produced by London based
Illuminated Film Company.
00 Jimmy received a Honorary Doctorate Award from the university
Dundee.

that there might be something of a career to

Fíorscéal dochreidte faoi Josephine
Brown baintreach óg a bhí ag obair do
na Sasanaigh i mBeairic Victoria i
gCorcaigh sa bhliain 1919. Théis di cás
caomhnóireachta a mic a chailleadh i
Sasana, rinne sí margadh leis an IRA
go ndéanfadh sí spiadóireacht dóibh, ar an gcoinníol go ndéanfadh an IRA
a mac a fhuadach ó chlann a athair i Sasana.
Ní hé seo an cineál tairiscint a fhaightear chuile lá ach seo an rogha a thug
Josephine Brown do Florrie O’Donoghue, Ciarraíoch a bhí ag obair mar
Oifigeach Fáisnéise do chuid an IRA i gCorcaigh sa bhliain 1919. Is maith a
thuig Florrie go raibh sé ag snámh in aghaidh easa ina bhfeachtas
treallchogaíochta gan eolas aige ar fhórsaí slándála an chathair, agus bhí
Josephine ag iarraidh theacht ar bhealaí lena mac a fháil ar ais ... Is é an
gátar a tharraing an bheirt seo le chéile ach nuair a théadh an chúis go
cnámh an uillinne, an gcoinneodh an bheirt acu a dtaobh den mhargadh?
The extraordinary true story of Josephine Brown, who agreed in 1919 to spy for
the IRA in Cork’s Victoria Barracks on condition that the IRA kidnap her son
from her in-laws in the UK. When Josephine lost custody of her eldest child in
the English courts, she returned bereft to her secretarial job in Cork’s Victoria
Barracks thinking that she would never see her son again.
Meanwhile, the IRA’s intelligence officer, Florrie O’Donoghue, desperately
needed spies in the British administration to wage his intelligence war in the
city. When they met, Josephine knew that she had a strong bargaining
position, but would she be able to convince the IRA to execute this daring child
abduction in a foreign jurisdiction? What ensues is a high-stakes game
between spy and spymaster.

Return to the sea is a documentary set on the remote Island
of Inish Bofin, Co. Donegal. The bricolage of old and new
footage, combining the work of the filmmaker Genevieve
McGill with the archival footage of filmmaker Dr. Donald
Martin, seeks to give a new voice to the people of Inish Bofin.
The film documents this vulnerable, indigenous Irish speaking
community on the island of Inish Bofin and explores the
notion of time, memory and fragility, investigating the past,
present and future of the community portrayed within it.

who lives in a small town in central Florida with their gutless father, W.W.
Jansen (played by Scott Glenn). When Ward shows up with his writing
partner, Yardley Acheman (played by David Oyelowo), to investigate a
story for their paper, Ward asks Jack to drive them around. The reason
Ward is in town is that Charlotte Bless (played by Nicole Kidman), an

them that Hillary Van Wetter (played by John Cusack), an unsavory
alligator hunter from the backwoods, was wrongly convicted at a trial
that took place near their hometown.

In 00 Andrew Duggan created this seminal installation in the disused
creamery in Dingle. Jim Sheridan at the time commented on it as having
the same great energy seen in the early days at the Project Arts Centre.[1]
Now especially for the Dingle International Film Festival Milk + Honey will
be installed at the vacant Riasc Creamery, Ballyferriter.
Milk + Honey, features Maolra Mac Donnchadha and Siobhán Dempsey
and was filmed by the late Tadhg Ó Coileain, edited by Eamonn Power
with a sound piece by Con Horgan.
This insightful work precedes Andrew's work with the National Folk
Theatre, his Location One Fellowship in NYC and his ensuing work in
poignant locations with Cindy Cummings, Paul Galvin and Olwen Foréré
and Jazmin Chiodi.
'Making Milk + Honey', a fly on the wall documentary short by Maurice

Bangladesh Revisited with George Harrison and Friends.
Anthony Wall
Anthony Wall has been directing and producing films for the acclaimed BBC Arts strand, Arena, for nearly thirty

stretch the scope of the documentary form.

gone on to win awards and honours worldwide. These awards include nine British Academy Awards, four RTS

By the end of 197, The Beatles had achieved a creativity unprecedented
in popular music. Their triumphant summer release Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely
Hearts Club Band was both avant-garde and an instant hit. It went straight
to No.1 in June and remained there for the rest of the year.
They immersed themselves in the fiercely radical art of the new counter
culture and decided to make a film on their own terms, not as pop stars
but as artists. However, was their adoring public ready for the move?
The film featured six new songs: ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, ‘The Fool on the
Hill’, ‘Flying’, ‘I Am the Walrus’, ‘Blue Jay Way’ and ‘Your Mother Should Know’.
Magical Mystery Tour is a surreal take on the British working class tradition
of a coach trip to the seaside, featuring an eccentric cast of characters,
some played by professional actors. Other passengers included friends,
associates and people they’d just invited along for the ride. In September,
they set off from London and headed west to Cornwall where most of
the film was shot.
The film was broadcast in black and white at 8.5pm on BBC One on
Boxing Day 197 to a family audience expecting a frothy entertainment
in the style of A Hard Day’s Night and Help! It followed a Petula Clark
special and preceded a Norman Wisdom feature film. While the music
itself had been rapturously received in the form of a double EP high in
the charts, the response to the film from the establishment TV critics and
the majority of the 15 million adult viewers was negative to the point
of vitriolic in some cases. As a result the film was not broadcast in the
uS and had only limited distribution elsewhere.
The film has been fully restored to the highest technical standard with a
remixed soundtrack. Properly presented for the first time, Magical Mystery
Tour comes out of the shadows and onto the screen

Cate Shortland (Somersault) offers a unique perspective
on the nature of collusion with this story of a young

attention to detail and the beauty of the imagery she
creates in her account of a national psyche brainwashed
to believe in their own supremacy, only to confront the

that Luke will not lead the same stricken life he has led.
On community service Robbie meets Rhino, Albert and Mo for

Possessing the talent of a prodigy can be both a blessing and a curse.
At an age when most people are fumbling through adolescence, gifted
young musician Marika Bournaki was already embarking on a
prestigious career as a concert pianist. But was this wunderkind truly
born to perform?
This intimate portrait follows Bournaki from age 1 to 0, documenting
the growing pains experienced in these critical years, and the pressures
heaped on her by a life of practice, performance and touring.
Throughout, her father-turned-manager, a Juilliard-trained violinist
himself, is devoted to encouraging her efforts and nurturing the
international music career he was never able to achieve. When, at 1,
Bournaki leaves her parents’ home in Montreal to study at Juilliard, she
comes into her own as a musician, rebels against the course plotted
out for her since the age of five, and experiences an intense period of
self-discovery and growth.
Director Bobbi Jo Hart provides a rare and candid look inside the
insular world of classical music, uncovering the elusive alchemy of
talent, determination, sacrifice and luck required to make it to the top.
We witness Bournaki mature from child prodigy to vivacious adult
before our eyes, watch her incredible musical talent evolve, and feel
the bittersweet sacrifice one family makes over time to help her
become a star.

This film is an exposition and examination of artist Pauline Bewick’s
iconic paintings and drawings, for which she is justly famed. Irish art
lovers are familiar with the optimistic Yellow Man figure. However the
Grey Man drawings a much more sombre collection, are seen here for
the first time. Maurice Galway who is director of the Dingle IFF is the
inspiration behind the film. The synchronisation uniting the work of
one of Ireland’s most-loved artists and Galway’s directorial eye, is tied
up neatly through the camera-work of Eugene O’Connor famed for his
artistry in filming Katy Perry, Rihanna, Prince, Pat Matheny and the
Beatles. Nico Brown who has worked with Mike Leigh and Alan Parker,
teams up with Martin Brundsen to create the original music.
Pauline Bewick scarcely needs introduction. This celebrated artist is a
national figure especially since donating in 005 a major part of her
life’s work, five hundred pieces in all, to the Irish State. Sketching since
infancy her peripatetic life has influenced her output, especially the
creation of the Yellow Man, which emerged after a two year sojourn in
the South Pacific. She is still working industriously, providing
illustrations for poets and dramatists, along with other adventurous
projects. Indeed the Dingle IFF programme cover will display her new
painting, Yellow man, Fox, Duck and Eggs.
the film is the result of the relationship Maurice built
with Pauline over the past decade.

On December 10th, 007, Led Zeppelin took the
stage at London’s O Arena to headline a tribute
concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records
founder Ahmet Ertegun. Not having played
together for decades, and with no certain
outcome, what followed has been hailed as one of
the greatest gigs of all time, instantly becoming
part of the legend of Led Zeppelin.
Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page
and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham,
the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to
perform 1 songs in an unique performance that
went from initial nerves to incredible flights to
ultimate triumph.
The evening was intended in every way to be a
one-off for that night’s audience only, and despite
much speculation thereafter, as such it remained.
Five years later the band reviewed the recorded footage with Director Dick Carruthers, and
ultimately decided that it could and indeed should be released as a concert film.
The result; Celebration Day; is a breathtaking concert film that takes the viewer up on stage
and in tight with the band, capturing every note, gear-change, nod, wink and slice of musical
virtuosity. It showcases their ‘tight-but-loose’ style; their incredible concentration, inspired
improvisation and sheer awesome power; cementing, as if it needed cementing, the reputation
of a legendary and peerless live act, as they deliver benchmark performances of classic songs
including “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.”
Twenty million people applied for tickets; only 18,000 got them. Now, five years after Led
Zeppelin convened one of the most eagerly awaited reunions in the history of rock and roll,
comes the film of the gig. And it’s so good, it might make the disappointment of not having
been there even more acute.
Celebration Day is a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll at its most moving, magical and magnificent.

Dick Carruthers is a director of concert films, documentaries and music
videos. Inspired in the early 90s by u’s Zoo TV, he became dedicated to
the high octane mixing of live shots with playback and special effects in
live concerts, pioneering what has now become the industry standard.
He toured with bands such as Take That and made acclaimed early
concert films for Portishead and The Manic Street Preachers.
In 1995 he landed the job directing two Sold-Out nights in London’s
Earls Court for an up-and-coming band named Oasis. This spawned a
relationship that spanned fifteen years, encompassing nine tours,
numerous live TV performances, their double BAFTA nominated
documentary, and eleven music DVDs.
In 1997, after an introduction to Mick Jagger, Dick was employed by the
Rolling Stones as their director and embarked on two World Tours with
them, lasting two years, though living ten in the process.
Since then he has gone on to produce and direct concert films for artists
ranging from Aerosmith to the White Stripes, from Beyoncé to The Killers
to The Who.
His work has been acclaimed and won many awards, including CADS,
HEW and New York Festival awards, and three BAFTA nominations.
His work with Led Zeppelin has delighted fans and critics around the
word, firstly with 00′s Led Zepplin DVD - the best selling music DVD of
all time, and now with Celebration Day - the film of their one-off reunion
concert in 007.
‘It should be like a theatre play - it takes five minutes to

Dreamtime Revisited, a new film by Dónal Ó
Céilleachair and Julius Ziz is a “walkabout in
dreamtime Ireland” inspired by the works of Irish
writer, poet and philosopher, John Moriarty
considered by many “as a major writer, comparable
to Yeats, Joyce and Beckett” (Guardian Obituary
007).
Dreamtime Revisited weaves together
contemporary and archive material, with excerpts
from some of Moriarty’s key talks, in a labyrinthine
invocation of what he called his “dream-vision”
of Ireland; exploring the spiritual and poetic
dimensions of its landscape and people.
‘Philosopher-poet John Moriarty drank deep
from the well of Irish mythology, seeking a new
understanding of what it means to be Irish,
to be Celtic, to be human.

The Dolphin’s Gift tells the story of Fungi, a friendly bottlenose
dolphin that lives at the mouth of Dingle harbour, Co. Kerry, off the
south west coast of Ireland. This is an extraordinary tale of a wild
dolphin and the unique relationships which have developed
between Fungi and those who have come into contact with him.
To the inhabitants of the Dingle Peninsula, Fungi is their dolphin.
Quite simply, he has changed many of their lives. For though he
could leave at any time, Fungi chooses to stay in Dingle Bay, his
gentle charm and fun-loving nature win him friends from far and

In the Deep Shade is not a ‘definitive’ career spanning documentary of
The Frames. Nor is it a fly-on-the-wall expose or an us-against-theworld hero saga. It is, simply put, a stark portrait of an extraordinary
band, who have played together for over 0 years.
In the Deep Shade celebrates simplicity. No captions. No flash-cuts.
No voiceover. With a photographer’s eye, poetic sensibility and
painterly aesthetic, Masterson examines the ever-evolving
relationship between five musicians who’ve known each other for
many years. That’s the story, and in its understated way, it’s an
uncommon one.
“You have to double-up on any eye contact with this band.
To use the old analogy of robbing a bank, it’s a tight
operation and if you get it wrong somebody’s gonna get

Ray Bradbury said,
‘this film (live Forever: the Ray Bradbury odyssey)
will be the fireworks at the end of my life”
live Forever: the Ray Bradbury odyssey is a magical journey
through Ray’s mind from the time he was born, his boyhood
and his coming of age. The result of three years of intimate,
exclusive and authorised interviews, this emotional and thrilling
theatrical experience transports the audience to the 190’s, to
Bradbury’s birth, his magic realist childhood, the literary and
film influences which shaped and nurtured the author we have
all been affected by - Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.G.Wells, Jules
Verne, Buck Rogers, Tarzan, Captain Nemo. We feel Ray’s loss of
family, his elation at discovery, his anger at cultural destruction.
Enhanced by beautiful and epic music, brilliant animation and
dialogue from Ray’s own poetry, we travel with Ray to his
literary and futuristic awakening. We are touched by his ‘Power
of Imagination’ and gleefully accompany him into Space and the
universe beyond.

heritage was legendary. A trip ‘back west’ was not complete without a visit to Páidí’s, to walk in
the footsteps of celebrities he had wooed over the years. He was particularly admired by a former
guest of the festival, Sarah Miles of Ryan’s Daughters’ fame.
On December 15, 2012, Kerry, and the world, was rocked by his sudden passing.
‘Ta an Rí caillte’ was how the news was broken to his many friends. Indeed the King had gone
from us.
But what he left behind was fond memories of a sports man, an Irish man and, above all, a family
man. A passion for all things Irish and Kerry. A passion for life. There are two Kingdoms - The
Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Kerry. Páidí is a king in both. Ar Deis Dé a anam.
Saolaíodh Páidí Ó Sé ar an 1 Bealtaine 1955. Bhain
sé cáil amach mar íomhá do gach a bhain le peil
Ghaelach, gach a bhain le Ciarraí agus go háirithe
gach a bhain le Ciarraí Thiar. I rith a shaoil caide
bhuaigh sé 11 Cluiche Ceannais na Mumhan,
8 gCluiche Ceannais na hÉireann agus Sraith
Náisiúnta. Ainmníodh é 5 bhabhta mar Sár Imreoir
Peile na Bliana. Laoch amach is amach ab ea é. Lean
an chrógacht a léirigh sé ar an ngort isteach ina
shaol pearsanta. Bhí fhios ag an saol an grá a bhí aige
don Ghaeilge agus dá oidhreacht. Ní bhíodh aon
turas ‘siar go Chorca Dhuibhne’ críochnaithe i gceart
gan sciuird a thabhairt ar thábhairne Pháidí uí Shé
faoi mar a dhein daoine mór le rá a raibh aithne aige
orthu. Bhí Sarah Miles, an t-aisteoir clúiteach i ‘Ryan’s
Daughter’ mar aoi speisialta ag an bhFéile cúpla
bliain ó shin agus bhí ard mheas aici ar Pháidí.
Ar 15 Nollaig 01 baineadh geit as mhuintir Chiarraí
agus as an domhain nuair a cailleadh é go tobann.
‘Tá an Rí caillte’ - sin é an tslí a cuireadh in iúl dá
chairde go raibh sé imithe. Sea, go deimhin tá an Rí
imithe uainn.
Ach d’fhág sé cuimhní iontacha againn d’fhear
spóirt, Gael agus thar aon ní eile, fear clainne. Bhí
paisean aige do gach rud gaelach agus do Chiarraí.
Paisean don saol. Tá dhá ríocht ann - Ríocht Dé agus
Ríocht Chiarraí. Tá Páidí mar Rí ar an dá cheann.
Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
