All courses are subject to change. 1 LANGUAGE ARTS Language Arts is a 3-year requirement for all middle school students at WCA. Title: Language Arts I (required) Course #: LAN06A Prerequisite: 5th grade Language Arts Grade: 6 Credit: 1.0 Description: This college preparatory core course provides instruction in the Language Arts strands of reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, and speaking. It offers reading and vocabulary strategies necessary for comprehension of printed materials and the writing of effective papers with emphasis on all stages of the writing process. A careful review and continued development of grammar with its role in correct and precise communication will be included. This course incorporates exposure to universal themes found in world literature and teaches the student elementary analysis of various genres. Students can expect to read one classical novel or major literary selection per quarter as whole class instruction or as independent reading. At least a portion of these reading assignments will be integrated with ancient world history studies. Language Arts I promotes excellence in oral presentations and public speaking. As students analyze literature in preparation for high school honors and advanced placement courses, they are introduced to exploring themes from a Christian world and life view. Title: Language Arts II (required) Course #: LAN07A Prerequisite: Language Arts I Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Description: The purpose of this seventh grade college preparatory course is to build on the foundation of Language Arts 1 with continued development of reading, writing, and vocabulary, spelling and speaking to grade level standards. Students will be required to read one major classical literary selection per quarter either as an independent reading or as a whole class reading assignment. These selections will be integrated with Renaissance or modern classical selections corresponding with the student’s studies in the World History 2 course. Students also will continue to enhance their preparation for high school honors and advanced placement courses as they apply Biblically inspired critical analysis of various genres and works of literature. Title: Language Arts III (required) Course #: LAN08A Prerequisite: Language Arts I and Language Arts II Grade: 8 Credit: 1.0 Description: This final course prior to entering high school will place an emphasis on critical essay writing and research while maintaining common core standards for eight grade curriculum that includes advanced reading, grammar, composition, spelling, and speaking skills. Students are expected to apply their newly acquired knowledge of logical argumentation and critical thinking as they express themselves via writing and speech. The student will be able to explore themes in American literature applying a Christian worldview understanding of the fall, redemption, and healing. Students will read one major American classical literary selection or novel per quarter corresponding with their U.S. History course study. It is expected that students will be prepared for college preparatory ninth grade language arts and have the opportunity to continue in an honors level and eventually an advanced placement or college dual enrollment course of study. 1 MATHEMATICS The Math Department at Weston Christian Academy encourages the development of knowledge and application in mathematics which is necessary in every area of life. The subject is taught within a Christian environment with the goal of helping each child to realize that math can be widely applied in the real world; also for them to become aware that God is a God of order, not chaos, and they can use math skills to solve problems and bring order to their world. The department will work with all students who will apply themselves to learning so they can graduate at their highest capability. Description: Mathematics Course I develops mastery of decimal and fraction operations, percent and estimation skills, data analysis, ratios, rates and algebraic expressions and equations with a goal to help each student see that math can be widely applied in the real world. Title: Mathematics Course 2 Course #: 1205040 Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisite: Mathematics Course 1 Description: Mathematics Course 2 develops mastery of integer operations, rates, and ratios. Students will develop an understanding of and apply proportionality and similarity. Focus will be on Geometry and measurement allowing the students to develop an understanding of and use formulas to determine surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional shapes. As the students continue to further their Algebra readiness skills, they will develop an understanding of operations of all rational numbers and will be able to solve linear equations of many types. Description: Pre-Algebra is a fast-paced course designed to cover all of the necessary concepts from grades 6-8 which prepare students for Algebra 1 Honors. Students will master concepts from algebra, geometry, and probability statistics. The content includes, but is not limited to, problem solving, writing and solving algebraic equations, factoring, simplifying monomial expressions, evaluating formulas, determining probability of independent and dependent events, and applying the definition of random sample and basic types of sampling. Title: Algebra 1 Honors Course #: 1200320 Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra (Honors). New students placement based on entrance exam. Description: Algebra 1 Honors is a rigorous course designed to develop algebraic concepts and procedures to be used to decipher real-world and mathematical problems. Some topics to be covered include set theory, solving linear and literal equations, determining the slope, x- and yintercepts of a line given its graph, its equation or two points on the line, writing an equation of a line given any variation of information, and factoring polynomial expressions. In order for the student to fulfill the High School Algebra I requirement and receive high school credit for the class, he/she must maintain an 80% or higher overall average for the course. Title: Geometry Honors Course #: 1206320 Grade: 8 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisite: Algebra I Honors. New students placement based on entrance exam. Description: Geometry Honors is a fast paced course designed to introduce students to logic and proofs. Students will learn deductive strategies in problem solving using postulates and theorems. This class will be conducted at an advanced level of reasoning and applications of geometric principles. In order for the student to fulfill the High School Geometry Honors requirement and receive high school credit for the class, he/she must maintain an 80% or higher overall average for the course. 4 SCIENCE Science is a 3-year requirement for all middle school students at WCA. Title: Life Science (required) Course #: SC06A Prerequisite: None Grade: 6 Credit: 1.0 Description: Life Science is an inquiry-based introduction to Biological Science. Opportunities will be provided for the students to explore experiences and activities dealing with the fundamental concepts of life. Topics will include, but are not limited to: the scientific method, measurement, laboratory apparatus usage and safety, cell biology and cell reproduction, principles of genetics, classification, and structure and function of the human body. The end result is to think critically, solve problems, and gain competence in laboratory techniques. Students also are taught that God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, and it is His Hand that has shaped the world of science. Title: Earth Science (required) Course #: SC07A Prerequisite: Life Science Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Description: Earth Science is an inquiry-based introduction to Geology. The end result is to think critically, solve problems, gain competence in laboratory techniques, and understand the relationship between earth, water, air, and space. The student will see God’s hand in the intricacy and complexity of His created order. Title: Physical Science (required) Course #: SC08A Prerequisite: Life Science and Earth Science Grade: 8 Credit: 1.0 Description: Physical Science is an inquiry-based introduction to the concepts of physics and chemistry. Topics will include, but not be limited to: dynamics classification, interaction of matter, the periodic table, forms of energy, electricity and magnetism, chemical interactions, nuclear reactions, and career opportunities. The end result is to think critically, solve problems, and gain competence in laboratory techniques. Laboratory activities that include the use of the scientific method, measurement, laboratory apparatus and safety are an integral part of this course. The student will become increasingly familiar with God’s fingerprint an all facets of science. In order for the student to fulfill the High School Physical Science requirement and receive high school credit for the class, he/she must maintain an 80% or higher overall average for the course. 5 HISTORY History is a 3-year requirement for all middle school students at WCA. Title: World History I (required) Course #: HI06A Prerequisite: 5th grade Social Studies Grade: 6 Credit: 1.0 Description: The purpose of this two semester core course is to provide the student with a rudimentary understanding of global history from the beginning of recorded time through the end of the ancient period with the fall of Rome in 476 AD. Attention is given to the sovereign hand of God in all matters and to the need to understand the past in preparing for the future as participants and influencers in a global community. The course includes the development, advancements, and decline of the civilizations in the Middle East, China, India, Africa, and Mesoamerica. In addition, this course of study will explore primary influences on western civilization with emphasis on the histories of Israel, the early Christian church and the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to grasp the role of religion, ethics, geography, law, government, and economics in the cultural formations of the ancient era. Title: World History II (required) Course #: HI07A Prerequisite: World History I Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Description: This is a two semester core course that continues world history study from the fall of Rome and the beginning of the Middle Age period through 2014 examining the major cultural regions of Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. An emphasis is placed on the influence of Christian thought through the Reformation and in the art, literature, law, and culture of the Renaissance period in the West. This world history study includes but is not limited to the growth of nation states, Reformation, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Age of Reason, industrial revolutions, imperialism, the Cold War and global conflicts such as World War I and World War II. Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to grasp the role of religion, ethics, geography, law, government, and economics in the cultural formations of the middle age and modern eras. Title: US History (required) Course #: HI08A Prerequisite: World History I and II Grade: 8 Credit: 1.0 Description: This two semester core course provides a traditional approach to American history. The study begins with an introduction to the early Native American cultures, the journeys to this new land by the Vikings and Christopher Columbus, the exploration and early settlements of the Spanish, French, Dutch and English. Attention is given to the Christian influence through the Mayflower compact, the Puritan settlements of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the work of Roger Williams, and the Spanish missionary work in the west. The course follows the establishment of the original thirteen colonies, the role of the Founding Fathers and the Christian influence of the Great Awakening on the quest for independence. A study of the course includes the study of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the American Revolution, and the forming of our government as pivotal factors in our nation’s development. Strong emphasis 6 is placed on the unique, Christian heritage revealed in the concept, formation, structure, and function of our form of government. The study will explore the Industrial Revolution and reform influenced by the church, the Second Great Awakening and the leadership of Christian evangelicals in the abolition of slavery, the period of the American Civil War, Reconstruction, westward expansion, conflict and attempted resolution with Native American tribes, the Gilded Age, American involvement in World War 1, the Great Depression, and World War 2. The course continues with a study of the postwar middle class, the period of unrest in the 1960’s as well as the survey of the wars against communist expansion. The course explores the Civil Rights era with attention to the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the influence of the Black church on the establishment of equal rights. A survey of recent events from 9/11, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, global relations, technological advances and the changing cultural landscape also will be considered. BIBLE Bible is a 3-year requirement for all middle school students at WCA. Title: Bible Survey Old and New Testament (required) Course #: BI06A Grade: 6 Prerequisite: None Credit: 1.0 Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a panoramic view of the Bible’s main themes, stories, teachings, and principles centered on the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ foreshadowed in the Old Testament and revealed in the New Testament. The student will become familiar with every book of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation so that he or she may return for deeper truths and more comprehensive study. This course requires memorization of key passages on salvation, warnings, encouragements, and principles for living. Title: Dynamic Christian Living (required) Course #: BI07A Prerequisite: Bible Survey Grade: 7 Credit: 1.0 Description: Students will explore the Christian life from a biblical and spiritual perspective. The five characteristics of development – birth, growth communication, and behavior – are applied to the students’ spiritual lives as they are guided to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a fully devoted follower of Christ. A key component to this course is the life of Christ. Through this study, students are encouraged to take their place as Christian leaders in our community and society. 7 Title: Christian Worldview (required) Course #: BI08A Prerequisite: Dynamic Christian Living Grade: 8 Credit: 1.0 Description: This course is designed to equip the student with an understanding of how our Christian faith is not a private matter with little influence on the greater culture but rather that it should affect all of life. The student will explore from a Christian perspective theology, philosophy, ethics, science, sociology, psychology, law, politics, economics and history. Christian philosophical presuppositions and understanding will be contrasted with the major philosophical presuppositions of naturalism and pantheism. Through this course students will be able to defend their faith in the marketplace of ideas as did the Apostle Paul at Mars Hill so long ago. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in touch keyboarding, fundamental applications using databases, spreadsheets, and presentation applications, and Internet research. Title: Web Design Course #: CA06A Prerequisite: None Grade: 7 Credit: .5 Description: This course is designed to enable students to plan, develop, and publish welldesigned websites that combine effective Navigation with the appropriate use of graphics, text, color, and sound. Students will create a web page based on a Biblical worldview. ELECTIVES/FINE ARTS All middle school students at WCA are to choose from the following electives and Fine Arts courses. A total of 0.5 credit hour must be chosen for an elective and 1.0 credit hour for Fine Arts. All elective and Fine Arts courses will be held from 1:40 PM – 2:55 PM twice a week. Students will have elective courses on Mondays and Thursdays and Fine Arts courses on Tuesdays and Fridays. A central element of the course will be the fundamentals of acting incorporating correct blocking techniques, character development, improvisation, and role preparation. A portfolio should contain a variety of works in different media that represent the student’s God given gifts and talents. Students will be using different types of media, such as pencil, paper art, pastels and acrylic paint. Seventh and eighth grade students will have priority. 11 Description: The purpose of this course is for students who play instruments, sing, and have a desire to lead worship, to praise God while leading worship in Chapel. Students will focus on blending instruments, learning to play and sing by ear, understanding stage presence, playing fills, rhythms and leads, as well as harmonizing. A variety of styles of Christian music will be performed. Students who lead worship will be expected to maintain a lifestyle that strives to honor God daily both in and out of class. Earning a detention or suspension may prohibit you from performing with the Praise Band. This class will require daily practice outside of class. For performers other than regular school chapels, all students will be required to wear a white shirt with a collar and long black dress pants that touch the top of the shoe, with black dress shoes for performances. This course will introduce students to the basic fundamentals of choral singing. The repertoire includes choral literature of various styles, cultures, and periods. Students will participate in assorted chapels as well as at least one fine arts performance per semester. Students will develop the knowledge and competency to conceive and create moving images (video) on a pre-professional level, learn the basics of running both sound and lighting consoles, as well as the mechanics of running a multimedia visual presentation. Students also learn the basics of digital photography, editing, and clay animation. Students taking this class 12 will be responsible for preparing and facilitating chapels, programs, and other special events. Attendance will be required at some after school and evening events.
