Case Study
Former ICI plant, Fleetwood, United Kingdom
The former ICI chemical site, situated right next to the Wyre estuary, had been subject to a remediation project that
used carbon filter technology. This proved inefficient, with some treated water unable to be discharged into the
Estuary due to it falling short of permitted standards and consents.
Environment Officer Paul Bland had previously found success with a Watermaiden system on silt management
projects. He approached the company to see if the technology could be modified to treat large volumes of water at
the Thornton site.
The Watermaiden Contamination Destroyer has now been on the site for over 18 months. It has proved invaluable
with its fully automatic, ultra robust processing which destroys dangerous contaminants and removes volatile
compounds in 200 cubic metres and hour, an astonishing 55 litres a second. This has enabled contaminated silt on
the site to be removed 300% faster.
The low running costs and relative speed has resulted in considerable savings, both financial and environmental,
with over 11,500 kgs of solvent removed from the environment, that could have resulted in an estimated 7.25 million
cubic meters of contaminated waters impacting on the River Wyre.
