Our Pastor’s Letter
Voting
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in elaborating the fourth commandment “Honor your father and
mother,” mentions the duties of children and parents. Afterwards, different duties of civil authorities and duties of
citizens are explained. In this last section the following is stated: “Submission to authority and co-responsibility
for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s
country.” (#2240)
We should vote, but should my Catholic faith influence the way I vote? I will mention two reasons why it
should: 1) Our faith should influence all our actions and 2) The Church’s guidance should be understood as a
help not as an imposition.
First, our faith should influence all our actions. Catholicism is a culture, a way of life: it is a way of relating
one to another, a way of looking at humanity, a way of viewing reality—it all fits together. Therefore, my faith
should color all aspects of my life both private and public. It seems that in many ways our culture wants to tell us
that religion is fine as long as it is a personal affair and we keep it to ourselves. Relativism suggests that
everyone has their personal beliefs and one belief system is not better than another. It is true that we cannot
judge others: we do not know the history or the intentions of others. However, it is not true that everything is
relative. Truth exists and some ways of thinking and acting are simply better than others. A person who is not
Catholic may be a better person than someone who is Catholic, but the conclusion is not that all religions are the
same. Perhaps that non-Catholic would be a much better person if he had the additional help of the Catholic
faith. We can say that some things are true for all cultures and at all times such as the Ten Commandments. If I
really believe the truth exists then to keep it to myself would be a lack of charity. If the truth is something that has
helped me in my life, of course, I want to share this with others. I do not think we should force others to listen to
us but we should not be afraid if someone asks a question or God opens a door to a certain discussion.
What I believe Pope Francis is asking us is not to proselytize but neither to be ashamed of the Gospel.
We should not try to force someone to accept our way of thinking and we certainly should not present ourselves
better than anyone. We are not better than anyone, but if, for example, we have experienced that the love and
mercy of God is stronger than our sins and weaknesses, how can we not desire to share this? Our faith should
influence all aspects of our lives, also the way we vote.
Secondly, the Church’s guidance should be understood as a help not as an imposition. The Church is a
mother who teaches what is best for humanity not just for Catholics. A mother wants what is best for her children
and her counsels, advice, suggestions, and direction are all for the best of her children. The children are of
course free to do their own will and not listen to their mother. If you do not agree with what the Church teaches,
you should make a serious effort to understand why she teaches what she teaches—not just accept what others
say she teaches. If my faith does not influence the way I vote, I should be honest with myself in stating I do not
believe the fullness of truth exists in my faith. I understand it is a very difficult election and we should all pray
hard but in trying to make decisions we should involve God in the process. God has left us a Church to help us
and Jesus promised He would be with us until the end of time. We can trust His words. Although the Church
consists of fallen members, God continues to act through the Church for the good of humanity.
Let us pray for our country,
Fr. Mark

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Prayer
Sirach 35:12–14, 16–18. Are we people who serve God willingly? Are we the lowly, who are humble before God and in our
dealings with others? If so our prayers are heard and answered, and “the Lord will not delay.”
Psalm 34:2–3, 17–18, 19, 23. What do we each have from the Lord to be thankful for? Are you his servant so that he can
give your life its true meaning? Is he near to you when you are brokenhearted and crushed in spirit? He is there, are we open
to his glory?
Second Letter to Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18. Paul is reminding us that the meaning of our life is in God’s will for us. We each are
called to a life as a servant of the Lord. We need to be open enough in our prayer to hear his call and humble enough to
realize our need for God, and his presence, and his graceful assistance.
Gospel of Luke 18:9–14. Are we justified by doing a lot of, even good deeds on our own, or by acknowledging our
dependence on God? Jesus is saying it is the second option. We need God’s grace to pray and live according to his will for
us. We need God’s mercy and forgiveness to be freed from our sinfulness . We can only boast in what the Lord
accomplishes through us. Not a self-righteous Pharisee but a contrite sinner.

Carta de nuestro Párroco
Votaciones
No debemos
No
Si mi fe no
..
