¥ Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy
turkey, and Edward VII made turkey eating fashionable at Christmas.
¥ In England, 200 years ago, turkeys were walked
to market in herds. They wore booties to
protect their feet.
¥ Age is a determining factor in taste.
Old, large males are preferable to
young toms (males) as tom meat is
stringy. The opposite is true for females:
old hens are tougher birds.
¥ Turkeys can see in color, but do not see well at night.
¥ Wild turkeys like to spend the night in oak trees.
¥ Turkeys have heart attacks. When the U.S. Air Force was
doing test runs and breaking the sound barrier, nearby turkeys dropped dead with heart attacks.
¥ The heaviest turkey ever raised weighed 86 pounds, about
the size of a large dog.
¥ Aztec Indians raised turkeys for food as early as 200 B.C.
¥ The modern large-breasted turkey bred for the
Thanksgiving table is too heavy
to fly under most circumstances.
¥ Wild turkeys can fly for
short distances up to 55 mph
and can run 20 mph.

PEARL HARBOR DAY REMEMBRANCE
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5TH, AT THE MESA MARKET PLACE SWAP MEET
The public is invited to attend a Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance at the Mesa Market Place Swap Meet Saturday, December 5
at 11:00 a.m. in the stage area of the Food Court.
The Motorcycle Color Guard of America will begin the remembrance. by presenting the American flag, and will also honor
veterans in the audience by presenting flags for the five branches of the Armed Forces and the
POW MIA flag.
Linda Keith will sing the National Anthem, and other songs. The Patriot Youth Corps will remember those who gave their lives by performing the Salt and Wounded Warrior ceremonies.
Precious few who survived attack Pearl Harbor Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 are left.
Our World War II and Korean War veterans have long advocated for better care for more recent veterans through lobbying and service organizations like the Military Order of the Purple
Heart, the American Legion, the VFW, and even the Veterans Administration.
And the Vietnam Veteran, who was shunned in the 1960’s and 1970’s by the public, is an advocacy powerhouse, partnering with Korean War Veterans to insure that Afghanistan and Iraq
Veterans are cared for and honored properly, something denied to them.
This remembrance is not only to remember the 3,581 service people who died or were wounded because of the attack on Pearl Harbor, it is a tribute to the continuing sacrifices made by
surviving Veterans and their families to insure that the returning veteran is supported and has
an honored place at the American table.
Before and after the remembrance, adults and children are invited to write notes and color pictures to go into ‘Packages From Home’ care packages.

book "Unsafe at Any Speed." It became a bestseller and prompted the

* On Dec. 2, 1859, in Charles Town,
Virginia, abolitionist John Brown is executed on charges of
treason, murder and insurrection. Brown became militant during the mid-1850s, when he fought pro-slavery
settlers in the sharply divided Kansas Free State territory.
* On Dec. 6, 1917, a Belgian steamer and French
freighter, both loaded with ammunition,
explode in Canada's Halifax Harbor,
leveling part of the town and killing
nearly 1,600 people and injuring some
8,000. The ships carried 8 million tons of TNT intended for
use in World War I.

* On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy torpedo
-bombers take off from Florida on a routine training mission over the Atlantic
Ocean. The squadron leader later reported that
his compass had failed and his position was
unknown, and a rescue aircraft was dispatched
with a 13-man crew. No trace of the 27 crewmen or six aircraft was ever found.
* On Dec. 4, 1956, the "Million Dollar Quartet" convenes at
Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, in an historic impromptu
jam session. Present were Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry
Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. A tape recorded that day was
not discovered until 1981.
* On Dec. 3, 1979, eleven people are killed
in a stampede outside a Who concert in Cincinnati when a crowd of generaladmission ticket-holders surged forward
in an attempt to secure prime unreserved
seats inside, known as festival seating.
* On Dec. 1, 1990, 132 feet below the English
Channel, workers drill an opening
through a wall of rock, connecting
the two ends of an underwater tunnel linking Great Britain with the
European mainland for the first
time in more than 8,000 years.

FAMILY
Family gatherings at certain times of the year, such as Christmas, are very common. Homes are crowded then, if at no other time of the year. It is indeed a happy home which sees "the
whole family" gathered in it at Christmas.
Family gatherings are natural, and right, and good. They are
one of the very pleasant things which has survived the fall of
man. Next to the grace of God, I see no principle which unites
people so much in this sinful world as family. Anything
which helps to keep up the family sentiment ought to be commended.
When the young members of the family have once began to
launch forth into the world, the old heads may long survive
the scattering of the nest; but after a certain time, it seldom
happens that you see "the whole family" together.
But there is one great family to which I want all to belong. It
is a family not even known by some. But it is a family of far
more importance than any family on earth. To belong to it
entitles a man to far greater privileges than to be the
son of a king. It is the family of which Paul
speaks to the Ephesians, when he tells them of
the "whole family in heaven and
earth." It is the family of God.

NOT A PRAYER
A pastor and a member of his church were playing golf. The
member noticed that the pastor always said a silent prayer before each putt and he was sinking them from every corner of the
green.
The member said, “If you taught me that little prayer of yours,
do you think my putts would start dropping too?
The pastor laughed loudly and
said, “Frankly, no.”
