JAILED FOR DOING HIS JOB SHAWKAN EGYPT Mahmoud Abu Zeid, better known as Shawkan, was only doing his job. A photojournalist, he was covering a sit-in on 14 August 2013 in Cairo, when security forces swept in. “It was like a Hollywood movie,” he wrote later. “It felt like we were in the middle of a war. There were bullets, tear gas, fire, police, soldiers and tanks everywhere.” Shawkan used his camera to capture the mayhem around him. Police and soldiers had been deployed across the country to stamp out dissent where they found it. It was the bloodiest incident in Egypt’s recent history, claiming some 1,000 lives in one day. When police found out Shawkan was a journalist, they arrested him. They tied his hands together with plastic cables that cut through his skin, bloodying his wrists. They punched him and whipped him with a belt. Today he is held in Cairo’s notorious Tora Prison, and although he has Hepatitis C, he isn’t getting the medical care he needs. It’s been three years since Shawkan was jailed. In a recent court hearing he told the judge: “Taking pictures isn’t a crime.” He’s right. Ohio St. Apt #2523 Chicago, Illinois 60611 United States of America TORTURED AND JAILED FOR GRAFFITI BAYRAM & GIYAS AZERBAIJAN They protested in the only way they knew how. Fed up with an increasingly authoritarian state, students Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov sprayed an angry message on the statue of Azerbaijan’s former president, whose son currently rules the country. The message read “Happy slave day”, a play on the slogan “Happy Flower Day” which is celebrated on 10 May, the former president’s birthday. The young men posted a photo of their action on Facebook on 9 May 2016. They were arrested within a few hours and charged with drug possession. Bayram and Giyas say that the police planted heroin on them. The fact that they were arrested shortly after painting the statue, and that they were only interrogated about the graffiti, exposes the charges for what they are: a complete fabrication. Both young men were severely beaten and forced to make false confessions. “They took my pants off and threatened to rape me with a baton,” Bayram later wrote from prison. “I had to ‘confess’ and sign a statement drafted by them.” Bayram and Giyas are locked up awaiting trial. They face up to 12 years in prison – all for a graffiti protest. Instead of honouring that promise, the government has authorized a massive hydroelectric dam that threatens Indigenous cultures and ways of life in the Peace River Valley, British Columbia. Indigenous peoples in the region have already lost much of their land to oil and gas drilling. If the multi-billion dollar Site C dam goes ahead, they will lose one of the last areas where they still hunt, fish and carry out sacred ceremonies. The government approved the dam, despite finding that it would cause permanent harm to Indigenous peoples in the area. Now, Indigenous peoples from the West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations have gone to court, insisting that the Canadian government stand by the treaty promise made over a century ago, and stop building Site C. The court case has yet to be decided, but the hydroelectric company has begun clearing the valley anyway. “This is my home. This is where I want to raise my children and my grandchildren,” says Indigenous rights activist Helen Knott. “What will we have left?” Tell Canada to halt the Site C dam. WRITE TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA Urge him to halt the Site C dam, and honour Canada’s obligation to respect and protect the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Peace River Valley. Yet in January 2014 he was taken from his home in Beijing by police. For five months, family and friends were not told where he was. He was denied food for 10 days and had his feet in shackles for 20 days straight. Then in September 2014 he was given a life sentence – supposedly for stirring up ethnic hatred. Ilham comes from the Uighur community, a largely Muslim ethnic group that faces widespread discrimination in his home region, the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. In recent years, there has been a rise in tensions between ethnic groups there, as well as an increase in violent attacks. Ilham adamantly opposed violence and worked tirelessly to build bridges and encourage co-operation between communities. Through his writing and lectures he also highlighted government practices that discriminated against many aspects of Uighurs’ lives. But now he faces a lifetime in jail. He’s being cruelly punished for peacefully challenging the Chinese government’s policies towards ethnic minorities. Demand action. Tell China to release Ilham Tohti immediately and unconditionally. But right now, Johan Teterissa is serving a 15-year jail sentence for raising a flag banned by the government. In June 2007, Johan led a group of 22 mainly teachers and farmers in a peaceful protest in front of Indonesia’s president. They performed a traditional war dance, before unfurling a “rainbow” flag, a historical symbol of independence for the people of Maluku province, in eastern Indonesia. Police immediately removed Johan and the others, punching and beating them. They took the men to several police stations, at one point forcing them to crawl on their stomachs on hot asphalt, whipping them with electric cables and beating their ears with rifle butts until they bled. The torture continued during official questioning. Following a plainly unfair trial, all the men were convicted of “rebellion”. Johan was sentenced to life, reduced to a 15-year sentence. He is still in a prison, thousands of kilometres from his family and friends. Tell Indonesia to free Johan without delay. He was just about to start university in Cameroon, where he lives. But an SMS message changed everything. One day, Ivo received a text message from a friend, saying: “Boko Haram recruits young people from 14 years old and above. Conditions for recruitment: 4 subjects at GCE, including religion”. His friend’s message was a comment on how difficult it is to find a good job without being highly qualified – joking that even Boko Haram (an armed group) won’t take you unless you do well in your exams. Ivo forwarded the message to a friend, who sent it to a friend in secondary school. A teacher saw the text, having confiscated the phone, and showed it to the police. Ivo, his friend and the young student were all arrested sometime between September and December 2014. The charges against them include trying to organize a rebellion against the state. Aged 10, she wants to be a nurse when she grows up. But she may never live to realize her ambitions because of people who believe her body has magic powers. These people think she’s unhuman. They call her names like “ghost” or “money”. They want to steal her hair or – worse – her bones. Annie was born with albinism, an inherited condition that prevents her body from making enough colour, or melanin, to protect her skin from the sun. About 7,000–10,000 people in Malawi share Annie’s condition. And they are all at risk of being hunted and killed by people who think their body parts will make them rich. Attacks on people with albinism have seen a sharp rise since November 2014. In 2015 alone, there were 45 reports of actual or attempted murder and abduction. People like Annie have nowhere safe to go. It isn’t just criminals who will kidnap them, but family members, too. They think that people with albinism are gold that can be snatched and sold. Annie and others like her need the full protection of the law. Demand that Malawi protect people with albinism from murder. A speech she made 11 years ago has angered the authorities. In it, she accused the state of “slaughtering a 12-year-old child”: Uğur Kaymaz. To Eren, the 2004 killing of this boy by the army is one of many stains on Turkey’s history – a history she says the authorities need to be held accountable for. For this and articles published in a Kurdish newspaper she edited, she has been repeatedly charged with insulting the Turkish state and the President. Eren has been hauled before the courts more than 100 times because of her outspoken stand on the plight of Turkey’s Kurdish minority. In 1995, she spent six months in jail simply for using the word “Kurdistan” in an article. The sheer volume of cases against her are nothing short of harassment. He showed how governments were secretly hoovering up huge chunks of our personal communications, including private emails, phone locations, web histories and so much more. All without our consent. His courage changed the world. He sparked a global debate, changing laws and helping to protect our privacy. For the first time in 40 years, the USA passed laws to control government surveillance.
