A WHOLE LOAF by S. Y. AGNON
Presented by
EDNA APHEK
Join us for a discussion of a short, dream-like story by
Nobel Prize winner S.Y. AGNON.
The story “A WHOLE LOAF” is part of Agnon’s master work,
The Book of Deeds.
What is the “whole loaf” in the title of the story?
Is Agnon reminding us that the Sabbath blessing may be
recited only over a loaf that is whole, not cut?
Should we interpret the phrase in light of the rabbinic
injunction to make the blessing over two loaves?
Or are we talking about the greedy and egotistical nature of the
narrator who will settle for nothing less than "a whole loaf"?
Sequoia Hadassah welcomes back master teacher
Prof. Edna Aphek for another popular and insightful class.
