Since the first show in 2003, the event has grown considerably in scale and scope and has become a major event in the Lewis and Harris summer calendar. To mark the 10th anniversary, we were delighted to welcome back Matthew Maciver to open this year’s event, a role he fulfilled in the first show ten years before. There were a number of new competitions introduced for 2012 in the vegetables, flowers, baking, sewing and knitting sections and the sheep competition was completely reorganised to give more prominence to the variety of breeds now being reared in the area. This restructuring saw the introduction of a new sheep trophy provided by the main sponsors of the 2012 event, 1st Landscaping Solutions. Another new initiative for 2012 was a partnership with Sgoil an Rubha, which saw committee members work with all the classes in the school to run a vegetable growing competition. This initiative saw the introduction of another new trophy sponsored by Mairi Campbell. The first winners of the Fernhill Quaich were the pupils of P7. The 2012 show proved to be the biggest in the history of the event with 299 competitors entering almost 1300 exhibits and 1350 spectators passing through the gates. Attendees enjoyed a number of new activities such as the Highland Games display, a powerlifting demonstration and performances from the North West Allstars. We were also pleased to see the return of regular performances from the prizewinning Lewis Pipe Band, the Woodlands Band and the highland dancers. The show committee would like to thank all the individuals, groups, organisations and businesses who contributing to making the 2012 show such a big success. As we look forward to the eleventh show on Saturday 13th July 2013, we hope that the event will continue to go from strength to strength and maintain the support of the whole community. The first table below provides a summary of the level of participation across the district and beyond. In addition to Point residents, we had a number of exhibitors from other areas of Lewis and Harris as well as a number of competitors from the mainland. The second table shows how the 299 exhibitors were distributed across the different sections of the Show. Again in 2012, the Baking and Preserves section drew the largest number of exhibitors. Whilst most sections maintained a similar level of participation as in previous years, there was a decrease in the number of people exhibiting in ‘Cattle’ and in ‘Vegetables’. The major revision of the sheep section this year resulted in an increase in participation in that section.
