John Marshall High School Alumni Association Newsletter 3939 Tracy Street, Los Angeles, California 90027 Summer 2017 Volume 37 • Issue 2 Jon SooHoo S’80 Named JMHS 2017 Distinguished Alumnus A The SooHoo Legacy journalist wrote recently that our 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Jon SooHoo ’80, is frequently recognized as the grandson of New Chinatown founder Peter SooHoo Sr., and the son of Peter Jr. and Lucy SooHoo. Peter Sr. had been the primary liaison of displaced Chinese residents and those making decisions at Los Angeles City Hall when the original downtown Chinatown was demolished for the construction of Union Station on Alameda Street in the 1930s. The compromise was to create the New Chinatown based about a mile north on Hill Street. A plaque commemorates Peter SooHoo Sr.’s efforts in the Chinatown Central Plaza at College and Broadway Plaza — all of which lies just a short distance from Dodger Stadium. Jon, however, has carved his own place in the history of Los Angeles. For 32 years, he has been the official photographer for the Los Angeles Dodgers. There are so many images he’s taken over the years since working for the Dodgers after graduating from USC — that it takes him many additional hours to compile the best of them when asked to make a group presentation. Jon lives in the same Silver Lake area home he grew up in while attending Marshall, and has noted the proximity of his home as “just a fly ball away from Dodger Stadium.” In addition to the Dodgers, the highlights of his career include thousands of stunning shots from Rose Bowls, Super Bowls, Lakers, Kings and Clippers, as well as from a Space Shuttle launch in Florida. The SooHoo legacy continues to flourish in our community. Please join us to honor Jon at a luncheon on Friday, June 9 at Les Freres Taix Restaurant. The reservation form is on page 5. (More on Jon in the next issue) JMHS Named a 2017 California Gold Ribbon School State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently announced the names of the 275 middle schools and high schools that are being honored under the Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program. John Marshall High School is one of these schools and has the additional honor of being recognized as a Title I Academic Achieving School. This additional recognition is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line. “These terrific schools are leading the way in embracing our new rigorous academic standards and showing others how to help students succeed on their way to 21st century careers and college,” Torlakson said. “I look forward to traveling the state ...Continued on page 2 Page 1 Gold Ribbon School ...continued from page 1 to honor these schools and to help share the programs, methods, and techniques that are working.” The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assessment, accountability, and continuous improvement systems. A total of 477 middle schools and high schools applied this year. Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies. The award acknowledged elementary schools last year. The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. These schools represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating, but also highly successful school climate efforts, ranging from real time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention. Additionally, The 2017 Gold Ribbon Schools as well as the 2017 Exemplary Program recipients, Title I Academic Achieving Award Schools, 2017 Green Ribbon Schools, 2017 Civic Learning Award Schools, and the National Blue Ribbon Schools from 2016, will be honored in May during regional ceremonies held in Costa Mesa, Santa Clara, Los Angeles, Visalia, and Sacramento. For more information on the program, please visit the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program on the California Department of Education’s (CDE’s) Web site. Academic Decathlon Results After winning 2nd Place in the LAUSD Academic Decathlon in February, our team won 4th Place at the State competition held in Sacramento in March. Coach Larry Welch and the team worked diligently to prepare for State and brought home a total of 24 gold, silver, and bronze medals. The highest scoring team member, 10th grader Anrui Gu, also won second place overall in the competition with 9365.0 points of a possible 10,000 points. Team members also included Martin Gonzalez, Abeer Hossain, Tahmin Khan, Sean John, Samuel Lindquist, and Maria Soriano. Competing for the opportunity to attend the National Decathlon in April were 67 teams from all areas of California. The top spot went to Granada Hills Charter High School. Coach Welch is proud of the Marshall team and thanks the alumni association for our support. Burr was one of the visionaries who founded the John Marshall High Alumni Association in 1979. He taught English and was Department Chair and Gifted Coordinator at Marshall. Burr was born on August 27, 1931, the son of a farmer, and grew up in the rural community of Cissna Park, Illinois. He and his twin sister Beryl excelled in music at a young age and spent many weekends in Chicago with their parents for music lessons. He played piano, flute and the organ. After graduating from Cissna Park High School in 1948, he attended Wheaton College where he received a B.A. in 1952. At Wheaton College he enjoyed performing with the Men’s Glee Club and continued to attend their performances throughout his life, in addition to supporting Wheaton’s music program. Burr received his Master of Fine Arts in 1953 from Northwestern University. He then served his country in the US Army at Fort Sam Houston in Texas from 1953 to 1955. After his discharge, Burr moved to Southern California where he taught junior high English, while earning his M.A. in English at USC. He also spent several years teaching overseas. In 1962 he came to Marshall where he taught all levels of English for the remainder of his career. Many of his students went on to become successful notables in the entertainment industry, political arena, and other areas of influence. Burr always enjoyed visits and letters from his former pupils. Burr had an insatiable appetite for adventure and travel and spent much of his adult life exploring the globe. Some notable adventures include flying on the Concorde, a bus trip from Istanbul to Tehran in the 1960s, and a steamship voyage from Marseille through the Suez Canal and Indochina, ending in Los Angeles. During his teaching career at John Marshall, he spent several sabbaticals living abroad in Germany, Austria. and Switzerland. Burr spoke fluent German. Combining his lifelong love of music and travel, he attended many music festivals in cities such as Salzburg and Luzern over the course of his life and frequently attended concerts by his favorite orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic. He made friends in all corners of the globe during his travels and enjoyed corresponding with them. After retiring from teaching in 1986, Burr moved to Naples, Florida, and later to John Knox Village in Pompano Beach. During his later years, he spent his time sailing the globe on cruise ships and enjoying his friends and the community at John Knox Village. The John Marshall High Alumni Association celebrates the life of this remarkable man. Page 4 These two incredible photos were taken by Jon SooHoo and are two of his personal favorites. Sniffen auditorium on campus. Among those being honored were former principal Tom Abraham (Class of ‘64) and Mrs. Beverly Sutton for their meritorious support of Marshall athletics over the years. Mrs. Sutton’s daughter, Leigh, was killed an an auto accident in 1976 while a sophomore at Marshall, and she had supported a scholarship in her name ever since. Also honored as Pillars of Achievement in their fields were the late Eugene Turner (Class of ‘38) who won multiple National Championships in figure skating, and long time Southern California sports photographer Jon SooHoo (1980). Athletes Amanda Foster (2005-Girl’s Basketball) and two-time L.A. City Champion Tennis player Noah Newman (1997) received awards, and the 1986 Boy’s Basketball and 1982 Football City Championship teams reunited to be honored on stage with their coaches, Sandy Greentree and Dan Beattie, respectively. The event’s proceeds go towards helping current Marshall athletic teams. Past honorees include the likes of Football Hall of Famer Mike Haynes (1971), current coach of the Kansas City Chiefs Andy Reid (1976), and long time Southern California sportscaster Pete Arbogast (1972), who served as the night’s Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event. The next Hall of Fame ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the Spring of 2020. Mrs.Sutton and Hall of Fame Coach Rolland Brous. Jon SooHoo, his sister Nancy SooHoo Little Moon, and Coach Brous. Evan Kleiman Inducted Into The Who’s Who Of Food And Beverage In America Marshall alumna Evan Kleiman, S’70, will be inducted into the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America in a ceremony held in Chicago in May. From 1984 to 2012, Evan owned the popular Italian restaurant Angeli Caffe on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. As proprietor and chef of Angeli Caffe for 28 years before its close, Kleiman’s improvisational style, showed her reliance on simple ingredients and economical ingenuity to produce delicious and satisfying food with a fresh, honest, pared down aesthetic that people intuitively understand and appreciate. When Angeli opened in 1984 Evan was credited with reintroducing rustic Italian cooking to the US. She is the founder of the Los Angeles chapter of the Slow Food movement and conducts cooking and baking classes all over the country. She is the author of eight books on Italian food and one video app, “Easy As Pie.” As host of Good Food on KCRW since 1997, Evan has interviewed more than 6000 guests ranging from celebrated chefs to local farmers, enabling her to explore every aspect of food and how it intersects with human life. She is an active speaker on issues of food culture and sustainability and, just to maintain a balance, is also attempting to become the Queen of Pie. Letters To The Editor... Dear Editor... What a blast!! There are no words to adequately express the gratitude to all those who made the effort to attend our 50th Reunion from John Marshall High School – Class of 1966. Many of you chose to stay at the Hilton for the big weekend. Spotting so many familiar faces in the lobby was a sure and exciting sign that our event would be a happening thing. Classmates came from 17 states and from as far as Australia and Saipan. Some classmates made the 50th their very first JMHS reunion. We were thankful for senior picture name badges required for ID/recognition purposes! We have certainly changed over 50 years! 1966 had a Winter graduating class of 127 and a Summer graduating class of 516 which totaled 643. Of both classes combined, sadly, we lost 38 who are no longer with us. But … of the 596 still here, 139 classmates (23%) and 68 guests attended the event. My impression: The ballroom was over-flowing with 207 happy people – eager to embrace past times and create new fond memories. Kudos go out to our committee members, Patti and Trudy, who worked with us for the past 10 months - to make the evening a most memorable occasion. Hopefully, it met everyone’s expectations and, perhaps, beyond. Maybe some of you will be inspired to connect and remain in contact with one another. I’m now aware of all the states where I can visit friends! We also wish to thank Joanna Erdos for taking 60 of us Barristers on a tour of our ol’ Alma Mater. What a treat it was to walk along the hallowed halls, the courtyard, and even the mystery tower from our youthful past. “Yesterday’s Memories Are Tomorrow’s Treasures.” Once again, thanks to all you Boomer Barristers for making this a very special evening that will stay with us for a very long time. “To Marshall High We Sing Our Praises ……….” xo ~G&P Gail Ross Marchi, Class of Summer 1966 SELECTED FLOUNDERINGS A paperback of aphorisms/sayings by Nyle Frank W’63 To order your copy: $20 (includes shipping) P.O.
