Awadh was an important province for the Mughals. This was because it was a rich and
prosperous province due to its geographical location. The soil was fertile and agriculture
flourished. Also, its strategic location was an advantage for trade and commerce.

The post-Mughal era saw the rise of small succession states because the later Mughals
were weak. The Mughal Empire was very large and distant areas were difficult to manage.
Governors were appointed to look after the areas which were distant from the Mughal capital.
The governors took this opportunity and declared themselves independent from the Mughals
and established their own states.
