Though the majority of the fort dates from the time of the Qutb Shahi rulers (16th – 17th century), its origins have been traced to earlier Hindu periods. It was originally surrounded by three walls with massive gates studded with iron spikes. They also utilized an ingenious water supply system using clay pipes and Persian wheels.
