The Indian time is called flexi time and that’s why the Indian Standard time (IST) is often referred to as Indian stretchable time. In India generally people do not stick to time, though the situation has improved a lot, still Time is not as important as the outcome is. If the work is completed Indians count that as more important. That is why, you may be waiting, and you may face people being late. If you are told that something will happen in 5 min, it might mean it will happen in half an hour time. Simply, in India everything takes time. The concept of Affirmative Indian people by habit have an inclination to say YES to everything, they don’t like saying NO. Even if they are not able to complete it or to provide it, they will still not say NO. It’s a part of our culture, saying NO means not respecting others. The concept of “promising” All because we cannot say NO we promise a lot of things which we cannot fulfill/not fulfill in the near future/don’t have the time to fulfill. The concept of “ Taking Things easy” – a relaxed attitude Indians generally have a very relaxed attitude, it depends on the city as well, and for example in bigger cities it’s less. But in general people are laid back and take things easy The difficulty to break barriers Indians take time to break ice with a foreigner, but when they do they are a nice bunch to go around with. For a lot of Indians AIESEC is the only platform to get to know foreigners. The Life of an AIESEC member 1. AIESECers in India are generally 18, 19, 20 they are young, they study, they work for AIESEC and they are expected to be with the family as well so that makes their day a very long one. A lot of parents do not allow their children (aiesecers) to stay out late – especially girls. AIESEC in India has a lot of work for its members so AIESEC work is very taxing as well. 2. The distances in the cities are huge so that’s also a problem for them to commute. Family: usually people stay in a joint family, it’s a Collective culture, group and family oriented, people feel very comfortable in a group because they are so used to always being in a big family. Not many rules: There aren’t too many rules and if there are they are not necessarily followed like traffic. In general it is free of rules comparing to western countries, but there are many unwritten rules in the society, especially in the family. Transforming people is a quality that we have focused on the most, because we understand if we could transform our people, then only we could be able to advance their mission. 2) Indian working environment The working Style The work culture is not something static, it keeps on changing with the change in the vision of the organization, change in the needs of people and last but not the least change in the need of the society. Here are some facts about the Indian working style. They are here not to scare you but to help you not to over expect from the traineeship and to formulate realistic expectations. 1. Most of the companies and organizations in India are top heavy (the top management takes all the decisions or in some cases the director only takes all the decisions) which makes the structure not so flexible and decision-making takes a lot of time. 2. Most Indian companies and organizations are not habitual of working with an international work force so you might face some challenges in the beginning i.e. a week or so but this would go away as time goes. 3. When working you have to be very proactive, take initiatives: It is very very important for you to take a lot of initiatives because that’s the only way you will get the best out of your job, specially when you are working in an NGO. Sometimes you may not get the best supervision, you may not get the get feedback you are looking for, but the idea is to 4. be proactive and always look for new things and new areas. 5. Punctuality is not really the key word so do take it into account because sometimes people would give you appointments and they would be late. 6. Be ready for surprises. You would always feel that there is not a lot you can do to change the working style so just try accept things the way they are, but do give feedback to people around you. 7. In most cases you are not dealing with true professionals; people tend to take things easily . 8. The Indian working style is very different from the one you are used to or you would expect in Europe or Americas. WHAT YOU DO MAKES A DIFFERENCE AND YOU HAVE TO DECIDE WHAT KIND OF DIFFERENCE YOU WANT TO MAKE ! SOME VITAL POINTS 1. Communication – or lack of it: you might find that the communication is not the very best witin the company here you are working, not all of them ofcource. 2. Team work – different perception of team work, everyone works individually and then you mean in the team and present it, give update 3. Change – It takes a lot of time to drive change because organizations are quite resistant to it, there are set ways in which they have been working, and it’s difficult to change mindsets, so you have to be very pro-active. These are a few things that we wanted to bring under your notice so as to equip you with the Indian working style and that you don’t have too many cultural shocks. Remember: The aim of an AIESEC internship is to learn by doing and facing a lot of challenges. All your experiences on your traineeship would not necessarily be pleasant. The best thing would be see things the way they are and add a lot of your professional perspective.
