Page 2 A Healthy Dose of Marketing Recommendations Dennis Krepes, a renowned success seminar speaker, presented on the topic “Marketing..What Works, What Doesn’t and Why” on March 19, 2009 at the Harborside Inn. Dennis mentioned that many companies, up to 79%, tend to cut marketing budgets first when cutbacks need to be considered. Although the savings right now may assist the company, the long term result may damage the amount of revenue obtained in the future. Marketing is to be thought of as an investment for the future, and now is the time to build a clientele base, which you can serve in the future. During times of economic slowdown, it is imperative to continue working hard on creating fresh marketing ideas and make your audience aware of your product or service as often as possible. Dennis suggested the following approach be incorporated in marketing ideas to fully transform a company image into a memorable one: Focus on the image Must be consistent Must be positive Must ring true Keep in mind, 90% of the time, marketing fails due to the message delivery. Take a moment to be creative so people remember you. Try to incorporate these five great rules to marketing success: Consumers must like it or it has to educate them. It must make you more memorable It must give you personality. It must have a simple message. It works best when you use clever presentation. Feeling inspired to work on a marketing idea or change? Remember, the sky is the limit. Distinctive and valuable are two perceptions that very well may take your business to the next step. If you need any further guidance or have any questions in regards to this presentation, simply reach out to our expert staff by calling 262-697-4610. “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can not get them across, your ideas will not get you anywhere.” -Lee Iacocca Page 3 We Are Calling On You! The Business Services Team takes great pride in making Kenosha a better place to work and fostering economic growth by assisting with various Workforce Development proposals for funding. At times, Business Services will reach out to industry specific organizations regarding new proposals that may benefit that industry. Surveys requesting your input and letters of support are examples of how you can assist Workforce Development in pursuing grants. Our purpose is simple. We want to be able to offer the Employers of Kenosha County opportunities to remain competitive in a global market. In essence, if you happen to hear from us regarding proposals, please contact us and participate, because we may very well be the key to a brighter and more prosperous business future for your company. Even with the economy being as it is, our 1st Annual Youth Job Fair and the number of Youth that came out looking for that right position proved just that. It was impressive to see students come out dressed for success, resumes in folders, pens in hands and ready to meet with employers in hope of getting an opportunity. We had 21 employers attend our Youth Job Fair with over 100 positions available. Almost 800 job seekers attended in hopes of finding that perfect opportunity. Employers reported potential hires of 100-116+ individuals as the result of attending the Job Fair. Some of the employers commented: “It was a Great turnout. Thanks for letting us participate!” “Keep up the Good Work!” “Nice - wide open spaces. A lot of potential candidates.” “Great Support for the Youth of Kenosha!” “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt Page 4 Recession? Depression? What is the Difference? There is an old joke among economists that states: - A recession is when your neighbor loses their job. - A depression is when you lose your job. The difference between the two terms is not very well understood for one simple reason; there is not a universally agreed upon definition. If you would ask 100 different economists to define the difference, you would receive at least 100 different answers. So the burning question still remains, how can you tell the difference between a recession and a depression? Well, we are going to give it a shot and break it down: A recession can be defined as, “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the country, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth, real personal income, employment, industrial production and wholesale retail sales.” The one marker that seems to be a constant in most recessions is unemployment. "There has never, in the postwar U.S., been a 1 percentage point increase in unemployment without a recession having been declared, and much of that increase in unemployment occurs after the recession starts. A depression has been defined as a severe recession, usually associated with deep declines in investment and output, as well as high rates of unemployment. A depression is also looked at as an extremely severe recession in which the GDP declines by 10 percentage points. That was certainly the case in the 1930s, when the GDP dropped by more than 30 percent from 1929-33, with unemployment rates peaking at 25 percent in 1933. When it comes to searching for definitive explanations, Ronald Reagan may have gotten it right back in 1980. He said, "Human tragedy, human misery, the crushing of the human spirit … They do not need defining—they need action." The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. - Eleanor Roosevelt Page 5 BUSINESS SERVICES KENOSHA COUNTY JOB CENTER 8600 Sheridan Road A Division of the Department of Human Services John Jansen, Director Kenosha, WI 53143 To find out more about our services, contact one of the Business Services Representatives: Jeff Kehl Jerry Costello Julie Black Kay Dewane Rebecca Freund Barb Welch Fax # 697-4639 697-4707 697-4535 697-4696 697-4610 697-4523 697-4548 Upcoming Events May 5, 2009 - 12:30pm-4:00pm Kenosha County Job Fair Call Rebecca at 697-4610 to register today!
