Compare and contrast the attributes of a shape and its dilation(s) on a coordinate plane.
Multi-Step Example
Rectangle WXYZ is dilated by a scale factor of 3. What is the area of rectangle W′X′Y′Z′? How does
the area of rectangle W′X′Y′Z′ compare to the area of rectangle WXYZ?
Determine the length and width of the rectangle WXYZ.
̅̅̅̅̅
𝑋𝑊 is 2 units and segment ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑊𝑍 is 3 units. So, the area of rectangle WXYZ is 2 • 3 or 6 square units.
To find the length and width of rectangle W′X′Y′Z′, multiply the length and width of rectangle WXYZ
by the scale factor.
̅̅̅̅̅̅̅
𝑋′𝑊′ is 2 • 3 or 6 units and ̅̅̅̅̅̅
𝑊′𝑍′ is 3 • 3 or 9 units. So, the area of rectangle W′X′Y′Z′ is 9 • 6 or
54 square units.
54
The area of rectangle W ′X′Y′Z′ is 6 = 9 times greater than the area of rectangle WXYZ. Notice 9 is the
result of squaring the scale factor: 32 = 9.
1 Rectangle DEFG is dilated by a scale factor of 2.
What is the area of rectangle D′E′F′G′?
A 3 square units
B 8 square units
2 What is the scale factor of the dilation shown below?
Record your answer and fill in the bubbles on your
answer document. Be sure to use the correct place value.
C 12 square units
