Welcome to Lidingö

Lidingö offers you space to feel good! We focus on health,
keeping fit and outdoor life. On the island you can stroll in nature reserves, swim in the sea, play golf, ski and much more.
Millesgården, a work of art in its own right, offers solace for
the soul. Visitors to the many conference centres will come
away with new insights.
Today, Lidingö has a population of around 42,000. Housing
development on the island has taken place in stages, resulting in districts with their own distinct identity. They are often named after the original manor farms, such as Rudboda,
Sticklinge, Hersby and Skärsätra. The shopping centre at
Lidingö Centrum has some 40 attractive shops and boutiques.
Ancient Viking settlement
Långängen Farm is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike.
Lidingö has a great cultural heritage. Grave fields from the
Iron Age and runic inscriptions from the Viking Age show
that the island has been inhabited since 600 AD. For almost
300 years, Lidingö was part of the Djursholm Estate owned
by the Banér family. In 1774, the island was separated from
Djursholm, and the 25 manor farms were sold to wealthy
Stockholmers.
Close to nature
Rich outdoor life
Lidingö offers great opportunities for outdoor activities all
year round.
The Lidingö Regatta is held in early May. The regatta is highly
regarded by yachtsmen. Those not competing can enjoy
watching the white sails against the blue of the Baltic Sea.
Thirty years later, in 1803, the first bridge to the mainland
was completed, and the island successively developed from
an agricultural community supplying milk and fish to Stockholm into a modern residential area. In the mid-19th century, many summer visitors were attracted to the island and
several imposing summer houses remain from this era.
Lidingö’s present day character developed over large parts of
the island in the early 20th century. This is when the residential districts were founded and property developers offered
“a healthy lifestyle, outdoor recreation and contact with
nature”.
A favourite spot is the 18th century Långängen Farm, with
a café/restaurant. The beautiful surrounding countryside
has been made into a nature reserve. In addition to jogging
tracks and walking trails, you’ll find the 70 m high Ekholmsnäs slalom and snowboarding slope, one of the best in the
Stockholm area. During summer months, you can play golf
on the nine-hole course and driving range.
Kappsta, on the southern part of the island, is another nature reserve and a heaven for botanists. This is the birthplace
of the famous diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, and a bronze
replica of his attaché case has been erected on the site of the
house where he was born. The legendary case, supposedly filled with protective passes, was made by the artists Ulla and
Gustaf Kraitz.
Lidingö became a merchant town in 1910 and received city
status in 1926.
The open countryside surrounding Elfvik Manor, a working
farm, is ideal for rearing sheep and cattle.
Lidingö church was built in 1623 by councillor Svante Gustafsson Banér, master of Djursholm. The bell tower was
added in 1817. The church is probably built on the site of the
medieval St Anna Chapel.
Enjoy the ”Health Walk”, a 6 km long walking trail starting
from Lidingö Centrum. Along the route, signs have been
placed describing points of interest.
During the last weekend in September, some 30,000 runners
take part in Lidingöloppet, the largest cross-country race in
the world. The longest distance is 30 km. During the same
weekend, there is a popular Nordic Walking event, which in
2006 won an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
There are five swimming beaches along the island and a heated outdoor swimming pool at Brevik. If you prefer, there is
an indoor swimming pool at Gångsätrahallen.
All along the shores of Lidingö there are pleasure boat harbours. Boat ferries to surrounding islands call at Gåshaga
jetty.
Lidingö Tennis Club and Lidingövallen Sports Stadium are
located at Kyrkviken. There is an ice-rink in Högsätra, and a
first class 18-hole golf course at Sticklinge.
At Bosön sports centre and sports college, run by the Swedish Sports Confederation, there is training for elite athletes
as well as local clubs.

Welcome to visit us at Information Lidingö in the Town Hall
foyer, tel +46(0)8-731 30 72.
The historically interesting Elfvik Estate, dating from 1775,
is associated with the famous Swedish poet and bard, Carl
Michael Bellman. It is now a restaurant and conference centre.
The Town Hall opened in 1974 and was designed by Sten
Samuelson. The Town Hall foyer and Lidingö Museum show
interesting art and cultural heritage exhibitions all year
round. The Town Hall houses the town’s collections of cultural archives. Further information about the history of the
island can be found in the nearby public library.
A monument to the Swedish
diplomat Raoul Wallenberg by sculptor Willy Gordon has
been erected in the Town Hall gardens. The Town Hall also
features a Raoul Wallenberg room with a unique collection of
documents concerning the world-known diplomat. This room
is also used for civil weddings.
Flute-playing angel.
Lidingö’s most famous
tourist attraction is Millesgården, the home and studio
of the sculptor Carl Milles
(1875-1955). In this unique
environment, Carl Milles collected his own sculptures and
works from artists of other
countries. His collection of
classical Greek and Roman
sculptures is the largest private collection in Sweden.
Concerts are performed during the summer months. Separate exhibitions are shown
in the Art Gallery throughout
the year. On an abutment of
Lidingö Bridge, a Carl Milles
statue of an angel playing the
flute watches over the approach to the island.
