From garden to garden
The various village gardens come in many shapes and forms. Each garden has its own characteristics,
influenced by its location and the culture and history of the local community. The gardens tour is both a delight
for the senses and a wonderful learning experience!

Dieffenthal: the subject of this village's garden is the druid, and the garden is a medicinal garden. You'll
find out all about these "simples" as you stroll around the garden, which is overlooked by the rocher des
celtes (the rock of the Celts).

Scherwiller: the centre of the village is dedicated to the theme of 'courtly love'! Flowers, lawns marked
out in the shape of hearts by woven wood fencing, rose bowers…this unique garden illustrates the 31
rules of courtly love.

Châtenois: just below the Tour des sorcières (the Witches' tower), beds made from woven sweet
chestnut fencing contain plants used for making dyes and fibres for weaving, in a tribute to the village's
rich history as a centre for the textile industry.

Kintzheim: this garden is dedicated to hippocras, a drink made from wine mixed with sugar and spices.
The garden contains all the ingredients needed to make this beverage: vines for the wine, a bee-hive and

honey plants for the production of honey, and roses, herbs and other sweet-smelling plants for the
flavourings.

Orschwiller: the garden of delights is located in the garden of the former priest's house. It contains fruit
trees such as apple and cherry trees, as well as sweet chestnuts - a real delight!

Saint-Hippolyte: you will find this vegetable garden enclosed by stone walls beside a restaurant on the
road ascending towards the château du Haut-Koenigsbourg.

Rodern: Mary's garden, located in the village cemetery, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Red and white,
the colours of suffering and purity, are very much in evidence.  Roses, lilies, carnations, peonies
and other flowers bloom here.

Rorschwihr: the village has long been famous for its vineyards. It's therefore natural that its garden,
planted in a border at the entrance to the village, should be composed of vines, pruned in the medieval
fashion, and roses, which were used as indicator plants (giving early warning of disease or insect
parasites).

Thannenkirch: The garden has been planted in a small square at the entrance to this mountain village. It
consists of climbing plants including honeysuckle, clematis, ivy and other plant 'acrobats'.

Bergheim: Located between the musée des sorcières (the Museum of Witches) and the village library,
this garden is given over to plants which supposedly had magical properties: woodruff, wild garlic and
more.
