1 Master Course Outline NURS 262 Advanced Nursing Concepts 2 Course Description: Students will build on the application of complex concepts related to the care of patients throughout the lifespan. This will include analysis of nursing practice appropriate for patients with multi system, critically ill and/or emergent conditions. Students will have opportunities to apply learning in various settings such as acute care, critical care and the community. 6 lecture hours; 12 lab hours. Vocational program course. May be used as a general elective in the AA degree Credits: 12 (Theory 6 credits: Clinical/Lab 6 credits) Prerequisites: NURS 261 with a grade of “B-“ or better Learning Outcomes: By the completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Prioritize a list of Quality Improvement initiatives to optimize safe patient outcomes across the lifespan. 2. Integrate essential assessment data to exercise clinical judgment when caring for complex multisystem health alterations in a variety of settings. 3. Evaluate Leadership & Collaborative practices with complex multi-system health alterations. 4. Validate best practices using simulation technology to care for a client with critical health alterations. 5. Implement an individualized patient-centered care teaching plan for culturally diverse patients with complex multi-system health alterations, using current evidence. Teaching/Learning Methods Lecture-discussion, group activities, role play, professional journal search, case studies Methods of Evaluation: 5 unit exams 1 comprehensive final exam 1 scholarly written paper worth 30% of a selected unit Total Points 470 100 30 600 Calculating Grades. The following procedure is used by all faculty members when calculating grades: unit and final course grades are recorded as they are earned and rounded to tenths (e.g. 86.5). Exams grades comprise 100% of the unit grade*. Homework, attendance or any other points available in a unit of study will be awarded only after the student achieves 80% on the unit exam. The maximum grade that can be earned for a unit of study is 100%. *Each quarter the grade for one unit of study will include a unit exam worth 70% and a written scholarly paper worth 30%. Clinical Appraisal Tool Pass/Unsatisfactory Course Requirements 1. Average of 80% (B-)or higher in lecture in order to progress to the next quarter of the program 2. Passing grade in clinical in order to progress to the next quarter of the program (see Clinical Appraisal Tool attached). 3. Failure in clinical will result in a grade of C+ for the course. 4. Active class participation. 5. Satisfactory completion of any assigned written and/or presentation projects General Information – Important! See the Nursing Student Handbook for the policy related to missing tests. No provisions are made for late assignments. All assignments must be turned in to pass the course. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments must be original work. Please do not copy other students’ work and turn it in as your own. See the Academic Integrity statement below. Grading Scale: Passing A = 94-100% A- = 90-93.9% B+ = 87-89.9% B = 84-86.9% B- = 80-83.9% Not Passing C+ = 77-79.9% C = 74-76.9% C- = 70-73-9% D = 65-69.9% F = 64.9% or lower Academic Integrity: All forms of cheating, falsification, and plagiarism are against the rules of this course and of Grays Harbor College. Students who are considering withdrawal are strongly advised to consult with the instructor, advisor and financial aid prior to withdrawing.
