E-Newsletters are done by Sandy Kempa, and emailed to those who have supplied an
email address. E-newsletters save B.E. money, which we happily spend on needy
animals. Because of our recent computer problems, we have had trouble getting our
paper newsletters mailed out to those who do not have computers, or
those who choose not to participate in electronic newsletters. We are continuing to
work on solutions, and hope people will be patient. Paper newsletters are at the Skyline
Lodge, Double Arrow Vet Clinic, East Slope Vet Clinic, the Beehive, the Seniors Center,
and at the shelter. Our FACEBOOK account and our own Website also have the current
newsletters. We thank Kindra for her work on our FACEBOOK account and Dale for her
work on our Website.
APRIL 19, 2017 BRIGHT EYES GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
The April meeting was called to order by the President,Terrie Nylund. She asked
attendees to peruse the 04/19/2017 Treasurer’s Report, which was approved as written.
Income came from: Cash donations Earmarked for our ailing Boiler(We are grateful!);
Other Cash Donations; Memberships; Late St. Pat’s Bake Sale; Memorial donation;
Transfer from Savings. Expenses were to: Double Arrow Vet Clinic; 3 Rivers(phone);
Ace Hardware; New Storage Shed purchase(Whew, kind of big expense); Montana
Waste; Acantha(St.Pat’s Bake Sale); Steve Howard Plumbing for Boiler and Heat
Exchanger; Soroptimist for Summer Festival table rent; March payroll(Fed. taxes,
Soc.Sec., Medicare, MT state taxes); Montana State Fund, last 2017 installment);
Swenson and Co.(March payroll prep). Our Spay/Neuter checking account had income
from: Misc. sales; Cash Donations; Pre-School tour donations; Impound donation;
Adoption donation; Boarding for four dogs; Guardian Angel donation for Pistachio and
Rags kitties. Expenses were to: East Slope Vet Clinic (vaccs, x-rays,labs work, meds);
Double Arrow (spays, neuters, Scooby work); and a $.10 year end adjustment. Savings
account had Very Modest interest income; and a transfer of funds was made to
Checking account. Our CD’s are waiting for needed expenses for the animals, the
shelter, and the property. Our working capital is much smaller than our total assets, and
is carefully managed for the benefit of needy animals. Bright Eyes’s projected Average
Monthly Expenses are going to be $7,832, reflecting having a new full-time Shelter
Manager, who will be starting her duties this summer. Soon, our monthly expenses will
be far greater than our usual monthly income; so we will be concentrating on
fundraisers, that will result in more income. We will continue to depend on Cash
Donations of our dear friends and members, as well as seeking those elusive grants.
The needy animals depend on us, and we appreciate any and all help. A complete
Treasurer’s report is found in the meeting agenda or available by request.
CORRESPONDENCE: 1.Brian and Brenda DeRusha, Idaho Falls, write a great letter of a huge Spay/
Neuter Coalition, resulting in 243 spays/neuters. Their goal is for Idaho Falls to be a total No-Kill
Community. And, they thank B.E. for our continuing work, too. 2. An invitation to participate in the
Summer Festival 3. Our dear friend, Jim Thalman, sent a note of love and encouragement. 4.
Donna and Tony Hudson thanked us for our work for needy animals, and an adopted dog update. 5.
Melody Carlon and “Xena” doggie wrote us a thank you and good wishes note. 6. Leah sent us a
lovely Easter card. 7. Susan Brandt thanked us for our help with “Ava” dog adoption, and boiler
encouragement. Susan, a good and long-time B.E. friend! 8. Cathy Dombrovske wrote us a nice
boiler note, too. OLD BUSINESS: The March meeting minutes in March newsletter were approved.
NEW BUSINESS:
1.SHELTER BOILER IS FIXED! YAHOO! Big Thanks for donations, earmarked
for the boiler problems! The heat exchange unit was replaced and is working fine; and
the boiler inspector has certified us for another year.
2. MT.STATE LEGISLATURE: The Cost of Care bill was shot down, early on.
House Bill 570, also, did not pass. This was the Commercial Breeder bill, mentioned
during the last meeting. Language will be changed on the two bills introduced this year
and we will try, again, next session. The upset is mostly due to the Ag division, with
ranchers feeling threatened, and the AKC balking at breeding inspections. What?!?!
3. FUNDRAISING: Included in our meeting packet, was a 2016 Fundraiser
Breakdown, very interesting! Each fundraiser income and expenses was listed. Of
those, the Dinner/Dance brings in the most money, but, also, has the biggest expenses.
Pennies for Pets brings has good income and less expense. Something for us, who put
these events on, to think about. We then discussed a Garage Sale. The City of
Choteau Clean Up and Recycling Week is scheduled for May 20-28. We had thought
that might be a good time for our garage sale, too. Steve N. spoke of talk of other
groups, individuals have an “All-Day or All-Weekend Community Garage Sale, together.
There was interested discussion, and more information is to come. Watch the Acantha
for more details, in the upcoming weeks.
4. Our Wonderful Sandy Lange is at home, and welcomes prayers, calls, notes,
contacts. She and Dale just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary!
Congratulations to two special people. Josie and others are such a big help!
5. SUMMER FESTIVAL: Paperwork has been done, and B.E. will have its same
and perfect location, again. We will have one table, and hopefully, our new portable
Page 3
kennel with a shade cover, for any of our shelter pets to hang out in, during this and
other fundraisers. Crossed fingers on that new kennel being available! Sara
O’Donnell invited B.E. to set up a display during the Quilting Festival at the Stage Stop
Inn, the first week of May.
6. TAXES! B.E. has been notified, that we are being audited. Terrie says, BARF!
7. MISC.: A. Next Meeting—May 17, Wed., 6:30, Library B. Terrie told us that
the Ace Hardware staff had a lot of fun selling the remaining St.Pat’s Bake Sale goods,
after we moved out of the Scout Hall. C. New Weekend Shelter Hours: 8:00-2:00, for
the current time.
8. A NEW SPECIAL FUNDRAISING PROJECT: B.E. WILL BE
PARTICIPATING IN A COMMUNITY SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC, DATE TO BE
ANNOUNCED, LIKELY IN THE SUMMER. WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON THE FERAL
CATS AND COLONIES AROUND THE CHOTEAU AREA, TO HELP CONTROL THE
POPULATION PROBLEM. WE WILL BE FUNDING A GOOD PORTION OF THE
EXPENSES OF THIS VERY WORTHY PROJECT; AND WE WOULD BE SO
APPRECIATIVE OF ANY DONATIONS, EARMARKED “The Spay/Neuter Clinic”.
Many thanks, in advance!!

YAHOOO! ADOPTIONS AND GOOD NEWS STORIES!!!
1. BO, very nice dog, was adopted by Julia S., and we hear he is doing just great!
2. ROSIE, cute little doggie, was adopted by Susan B., and adjusting so nicely.
3. JOJO, the other cute little doggie, was adopted by Becky O., and is having a ball in
her new home.
4. Coal, dog, was claimed by owners Jeff and Stacey H.
5. SENYA, beautiful kitty, was adopted by Julie E. and has found her loving and
permanent home, with a wonderful family.
6. ZYPPER, cat and long-time resident, won the Kitty Lottery! He was always so loving
with people, not with other cats or dogs and has a “condition”; hard to find that special
home. Well, Aubrie and Teri M. gave him that special home! He loves kids and adults,
is so cuddly, and gets as much love as he gives. He was happy with us; but, he is
ECSTATIC in his new home!
7. SHADOW continues to magnificently represent B.E., with his weekly community
visits; as well as Welcomer-in-Chief for preschool tours at the shelter.
8. SPARROW, current Office Kitty, is everyone’s darling. She has some serious health
issues, but bears them with bravery and good spirits.. In fact, she can get a little fed up
with too much attention, at times, and “tells us off” in now uncertain terms, then. But, in
a few minutes, is ready for more hugs, a little cheese treat, and a nap in her office bed.
9. SHORTY dog’s GF owners, gave us a 12 year old update on him. He is a wonderful
member of their family, and a complete joy, all these years. Thanks, Folks!
