Universidad de Montevideo Global Supply Networks & Manufacturing Cultures in Latin America – May 5 - 23, 2008 Montevideo, Uruguay The smallest Hispanic country in South America, Uruguay is bordered to the north by Brazil, to the west by Argentina, to the south by the Rio Plata, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and has nearly 500 kilometres of wide, sandy beaches. Located on the Río de la Plata, Montevideo (population 1.9 million) is lively and modern, yet more like a large town than a city. The Old Town, a small peninsula near the metropolitan port, offers many examples of the country’s colonial past. Not far from this modern city is an amazing landscape of hilly meadows and rivers. Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Punta del Este, the famous seaside resort, are only a short drive or bus ride from the capital. Uruguay is an inexpensive place in which to live and study. Safety and health standards and political stability are among the best in Latin America. Course Description The fundamentals of international supply chain methods with a special focus on Latin America and Uruguay, featuring a 3-week study visit to Uruguay where students can place their understanding of those concepts within a cultural context. It is a 4-credit study abroad opportunity. The 3-week course consists of three parts: • Lectures on supply chain management, logistics, applications to distributions centers, manufacturing, etc. • A field study component with company visits and sightseeing, in Montevideo and other cities in Uruguay. • A project group component. Students The course has been designed primarily for delivery to business and engineering students, especially juniors and seniors, in any major: Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Computer Science, etc. The mixed groups will allow students to learn from the diversity of cultures and modii operandi.
