SWA
Spring Show
is
May 13-15
. . . by Wanda Brewster
Hello Everyone,
As I write this it looks like winter has returned after several warm and spring like days. It is
windy and blustery and the rain is coming down in sheets. Days like this give us the
opportunity to get in the studio and create since it won’t be long before we will need to be
ready for the various venues to display our work over the spring and summer.
One of those opportunities, of course, is the SWA Spring Show being held May 13th
through the 15 again this year at the H.H. Hall Building in Hazel Dell. You will need to drop
off your paintings on Wednesday the 11th in the evening. This is always an exciting time for
our members and the community. We have one of the best shows in the area and your Show
Committee has been hard at work getting ready. We will have flyers and cards at the general
meeting on Wednesday the 16th for you to disperse to friends, family and community venues
to advertise for this show.
Our call to artist and prospectus is already on our website. It is important that we all take a
part in getting the word out so that we have a successful show. The better our advertising is,
the more opportunities there will be to sell our work. At the last meeting, Katey Sandy spoke
to us about getting Sponsor Awards. The idea is to get businesses in the community to
support the arts by choosing paintings that they would like to recognize, either by cash award
or services or products from their businesses. If you want more information about how you
can help with this please see Katey or give her a call.
You can help support SWA at the show by being a sitter, or by helping to set up and take
down the event. Carol Lytle is in charge of getting volunteers. She will have sign up sheets
at the general meeting so look for her and choose the time that works best for you.
In this newsletter you will find an information sheet for the upcoming SWA workshop for
this year. Diana Thewlis will be teaching. Diana is an excellent teacher with a lot of
background and experience and we are lucky to have her in our group. This workshop will be
on June 11th and it will be a very reasonable price of $55 for members.
Arletta Reidler has been working on our website and we now have room for more of you to
display your work in the gallery posted there. You will find instructions included in this
newsletter on how to post your paintings. It is an excellent opportunity to share your work.
Our demonstrator for March will be Lynn Nadal. She is involved with the Northbank
Community Project. I’m looking forward to another great demo.
The Artist of the Month this time is Lila Martin. Lila has been a member for a couple of
years and works in oils. Lila has been contributing as a volunteer for us since she joined and
we appreciate her willingness to help out. It will be interesting to find out about Lila’s
journey.

SWA Club Officers
President
I am happy to give you good news regarding our search for
volunteers to help on our board. Janice Tracy has agreed to be a
candidate for the President’s job. You will remember Janice from her
presentation as “Artist of the Month” last month. We want Janice to
have a smooth transition so we are introducing her to you now so that
you can get to know her better. She has been sitting in on our board
and show committee meetings to learn the ropes. Arletta, Earlene and
I have been giving her tips and we promise to be mentors. Jennifer
can officially step down now, so she can concentrate on improving
her health. The by-laws allow for this emergency election.
We will nominate Janice at the April meeting so we can introduce
her as President in May, in time for the show. Arletta and I will
continue to take care of business that needs to be addressed until
May. Unfortunately Janice will be out of town for our April meeting.
So please take an opportunity to speak with her at the meeting on
March 16th.
Our board still needs a 1st and 2nd vice president. We would love
to talk to you about these jobs and how you might fit on the board.
We are hoping to get someone who could at least assist with these
jobs, to see if they could take them on in the future. We would be
able to find a mentor if you would be willing to consider it!
Smiles,
Wanda

February 2016 SWA Minutes
The February 17 meeting of SWA was called to order by
Arletta Reidler.
The report of the Treasurer showed a total of $11, 111.52 in all
accounts.
Jean Toepfer discussed the proposed by-law changes. They are:
omit the position of the corresponding secretary, a quorum of three
required at Board meetings, officers would be president, first vice
president, second vice president, recording secretary and treasurer.
Also, the hospitality person will assist the show committee and the
membership chair position would be dropped. Jean moved to
accept the by-law changes as printed in the Pen and Palette and
clarified at the meeting. The motion was seconded and carried.
Diana Thewlis will be conducting a color workshop this spring and
a survey is available for interested participants to indicate what
they hope to learn.
Katey Sandy , spring show committee, stated that the show will be
May 13-15 at the Hall Building. Needed are sponsor awards which
go directly to artists that enter the show. A sponsor award could be
a gift certificate or cash. Sponsors go to the show and select an art
piece they like for their artist award.
Katey is also part of a committee exploring new and larger venues
for shows. If you are able to suggest a possibility to explore, please
contact her.
Marianne Stokes is looking for new or recent members to
participate as Artist of the Month.
Artist of the month for this meeting was Janice Tracy and artist
demonstrator, Reid Trevarthen, discussed his journey from pin
striping on vehicles to gallery quality paintings.

A brief recap of the by-law changes at our 2/17/16 meeting:
By a vote at our February 17, 2016 meeting we agreed to
make the following changes to our by-law:
The board position of “Corresponding Secretary” (Article 4,
Section 1) has been deleted leaving us with a five member
Executive Board. Our President and Hospitality/Host will
share in the responsibility for overseeing and retaining
correspondences made on behalf of the club.
Additionally, the by-law specifies a quorum of three board
member are required to conduct business. We also changed
the oversight of the club finances by having the President and
a board member annually confirm that our bank balances
conform with the Treasurer's monthly financial reports.
Finally, the Membership Chair has been changed to the
Membership/Yearbook Chair.
All changes will appear in the next publication our Yearbook.
