JYC March 2014 41122125552Issue 3 HAILER Volume 68 – Issue 1 JUNEAU YACHT CLUB St. Patrick’s Day Dinner – March 18 Commodore’s Corner Ahoy, Last December’s Hailer began with “It was a wonderful summer. I’ve lived in Juneau 14 years and I cannot remember better weather than we had this year.” I can’t think of a better way to open this Hailer other than by saying it has been a great winter. It may have been a little cold at times, but more sunshine than I can remember in any winter since moving to Juneau. This winter has had more sunshine than some of those previous entire years had! I hope that you have been able to spend your time getting ‘planned and prepared’ for this next boating season. Hopefully, it will be a warm and sunny one. There are lots of opportunities being planned by the Power Squadron. You can read about those on the second page in this issue of the Hailer. These cruises are open to sailboats as well as powerboats. Please plan ahead and join us on some, or all, of these trips. They will certainly be a lot of fun. We have also been having a lot of fun at the Thursday Evening Socials. We have had 10-20 attendees at some of them! Several weeks ago we had a visitor join us from Hawaii as she was passing through town. She is associated with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. She described her plans to crew onboard a 62’ open, seagoing canoe that would be traveling without navigational instruments from Hawaii to Christmas Island. That’s a really long canoe trip! You never know how anything is going to turn out and you can’t enjoy it unless you participate in it. Attend the dinners and socials and cruises. Be a part of the club. If you have a skill, share it. If you have an idea, mention it. We can all make our club a better club and boating in SE Alaska more enjoyable and safer for all of us. But, that will only happen if we all participate. The Board and I are open to new ideas. Feel free to contact us and share your thoughts and suggestions. For the past several seasons, the JYC Power Squadron has taken the lead in scheduling and carrying out fleet events at various locations around the region. Trips to Taku Harbor, Swanson Harbor and Hoonah have all been well-attended, with lots of demand for repeat performances. Members who have participated say the fleetsponsored events are a great chance to get to know fellow boaters and JYC members, outside the usual context of the monthly dinners. It’s especially nice—and sometimes a good safety measure-to know other experienced boaters as we travel to remote corners of SE Alaska. These events give us a chance to share boating information on interesting local places, maintenance tips, lies about secret fishing spots, etc. For Summer 2014, we have several events planned: May 24, Taku Harbor—USCG flare training and demo; practice discharge and disposal of old flares under supervised and approved conditions. How many of us have actually set off a flare? Better to practice ahead of when we actually need one in an emergency. June 21-22, Swanson Harbor raft-up and Hoonah/Icy Strait Point Neighbors’ Day flotilla. This has been one of our most popular events in the last few years. We include a fun potluck at the dock in Swanson, then over to Hoonah for some Zip Rider adventure and great food at the old cannery site, operated by Huna Totem Corporation. August 8-9-10, Golden North Salmon Derby. JYC has offered to provide assistance to the Territorial Sportsmen organizers with patrol boats, boundary limit watchers, carrying officials, etc. Purely voluntary, and you can still fish even if you are helping out. The JYC Board and Power Squadron are interested in hearing other ideas for group activities. Contact any Board member. These activities are open to all JYC members and their guests, and sailors are especially welcome to join Power Squadron events. Please let the JYC Board of Directors know how this has benefited you. Also, please don’t pass this login information around because if we abuse it we may lose it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JYC Building Remodel Almost Completed We have made a lot of improvements to our building over the past year or so. There is a new refrigerator, ice maker, bar refrigerator, freezer, French door in the main hall, new windows all around, and now the siding is installed and just a couple final touches for it to be finished! That is a lot of change, but it has all been for the better. The members I’ve spoken with are all amazed at how much better everything looks. There are still a few things that are being planned. We are hoping to clean up the ceiling in the main hall and install sound deadening panels between the light fixtures. Gutters still need to be installed, and either a patio or a deck needs to be built in front of the main hall. Stay tuned, we are hoping to get some of this done this summer. Marlinspike Seamanship Workshops If you would like to learn new skills like splicing, fancywork, or even basic knot tying then these workshops are for you. If you already know these skills then these workshops are your chance to show off your talents. Topics so far have included making a Monkey’s fist and how to make a Needleless Whippings. If you would like to participate in these events then join us on Thursdays during our weekly social. Please let me know what your particular interest is or some skill you would like to share so I can get them scheduled. For information or to volunteer your skill please call Todd Buck at 723-2825. Juneau Youth Sailing JYS is getting ready for their summer sailing camps. If you know any kids aged 12 and up then get them registered. There will also be some adult classes. JYS will be providing a class for Yacht Club members in late April or early May. Once people have qualified in the JYS boats then we can start using them for sailing races during our Thursday or Friday evening socials. The per person cost for the full day sailing class is only $100 and to use the boats for an entire month is only $25. As boat owners, we all know that this is an incredible deal. This will be a lot of fun for the sailors as well as the Graham Room spectators.
