NSPCC’s ‘Speak Out. Stay Safe.’ Programme
Year 7 Assembly
On Friday, Years 3-6 were visited by the NSPCC, the UK’s leading
children’s charity, who delivered their ‘Speak out. Stay safe.’
programme.
As part of an assembly about the Queen and her 90th birthday,
Year 7 were asked to discuss in tutor groups the qualities that they
think our Queen has. Without any input from staff, you can see the
final list of their thoughts below. I am sure you will agree it is a
rather impressive list from a group of 11/12-year-olds!
“The NSPCC came to school and talked about bullying and being
abused. I learnt a lot of things. We had an assembly and then we
had some lessons and then we went back to do some activities. I
learnt that if you feel insecure you should tell a trusted adult or you
could call Childline the number is 0800 1111. It is an easy number to
remember. At the end we got a sticker and a card and a leaflet to
give to our parents. We watched two videos. I learnt a lot and it was
very good. I know what to do when I am worried or insecure.”
Charlotte M, Year 5
“On Friday some people from the NSPCC came to talk to us about
neglect, bullying, cyber bullying and child abuse. We all got a sticker
and a leaflet. I learnt the Childline number 0800 1111. I learnt a lot
of things.” Oliver C, Year 5
If you would like any more information about the NSPCC Speak out.
Stay safe. programme, including frequently asked questions, you
can find it on the NSPCC website nspcc.org.uk.
Mrs Seal
We concluded our Assembly by thinking about how we can learn
from the Queen when considering the roles of responsibility that we
might be appointed to in Year 8 as well as further into the future.

Live on Radio with BBC Somerset
We were asked to take part in a BBC
Radio Somerset Shakespeare themed
edition of the show ‘Clueless'. Radio
listeners around the county phoned in to
answer clues about where the
presenters’ next destinations were.
Caitlin, Henry and I performed a scene
from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We
were joined by the shows two
presenters and a cameraman once
listeners had solved the clue, “Find the
infants’ and juniors’ of a very famous
private school near Glastonbury Tor".
With brilliant sunshine and the Tor as
our backdrop, we read our lines in one
take as the show was aired live on radio.
It was quite strange as the presenters in
the studio were speaking to the location
presenters through their headphones so
we couldn’t hear what was being said on
the radio, only our presenters side of the
conversation and laughter. We were also
filmed by a BBC cameraman and were
surprised how many takes were needed
using different camera angles and
extreme close ups to record the final
TV clip.
Caitlin read the next clue and the team
headed off to Sutton Mallet for the next
Shakespeare reading.
It was a really great experience, a little
bit nerve wracking knowing that you
were speaking live on Radio, but we all
really enjoyed ourselves!!
By Will C, Head Boy
You can listen to the programme
here - our pupils are featured from
approximately 1 hour 7 minutes into the
programme dated 24/04/16.
Year 8 Bushcraft
Year 8 Bushcraft Club is off to a cracking start this term, with two sessions so far in the beautiful woods at the bottom of the school. Last
week, we practised using a knife safely, whittling a wooden tent peg and using different cutting techniques. On Tuesday, it was forecast to
rain, so we set to building shelters, taking into account wind direction, water run off and fire positioning. The low rumble of thunder halfway
through focussed the mind a little! Still to come: firelighting, camp cooking, using a hatchet safely and preparing game.
Mr Stickley
Linguist of the Week
Maddie C was awarded Linguist of the Week for her excellent video of her
daily routine, narrated in Spanish.
Maddie also won first prize in the class competition. Well done!

Year 8 Maths Revision
Until half term there will be lunchtime
revision sessions from 12 noon to 12.40pm.
The most popular topic, chosen by pupils
who turn up on any particular day, will be
covered. Mr Wright
This week’s Pupil of the Week award goes to Rafael
F. The department has been particularly impressed
with the amount of time and effort that he has put
into his creative writing since the start of term. If I
give him a piece of prep to write 100 words, he
comes back with 150. This recent effort to go the
extra mile and to take his progress and learning
into his own hands is very commendable. As an
added bonus, he has become quite the literary
genius.
I am expecting an impressive creation from Rafael
in the end-of-year writing paper at the end of May.

Latest news:
Go Faster Food Ambassador, Old Millfieldian and Commonwealth
silver medalist in long jump, Jazmin Sawyers, has just qualified the

compete in bobsleigh in the Winter Olympics! Kate Percy has been
invited back, after the success of last year's event, to give a series of
workshops to the GB Winter Youth Olympic Development Squad and
their parents, on bringing the principles of sports nutrition into
everyday family life.
All the World’s a Stage
The Juniors were very excited
about the return of Hobgoblin
Theatre who this year treated us
to a performance of ‘All the
World’s A Stage’. The production
was about a young William
Shakespeare looking for
inspiration for a play. He met
many famous faces from the
Tudor times including Walter
Raleigh, Francis Drake, Henry VIII
and some
of his
unfortunate
wives.
Some of the
children
were asked
to play the part of Henry VIII
wives and discovered whether
their misfortune was to be
divorced, beheaded, to die or
survive.
Word of the Week
This week, translate the following French word for your chance to
win a small prize… “Un drapeau”
a) curtain
b) flag
c) sofa
Please send answers to Mrs Crispin at [email protected]
The action stopped regularly so
that the children could meet in
groups and discuss the history
and facts behind the story. They
looked at the expeditions that
Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake
took part in and what they
discovered. They also looked at
the lives of women in Tudor
times and of the poor, as well as
looking at the different
monarchs during the Tudor
period and, of course, some of
the works of Shakespeare.
The production was followed by
a drama workshop where the
children learnt ‘freeze frame’
techniques and created their
own tableaux of scenes from
the play.
The
production
has formed
part of the
Juniors
ongoing
celebrations
of 400 years of Shakespeare
following their own sell out
performance of ‘A
Shakespearean Mash-Up Part 1’
last term and a week of activities
to celebrate the bard. The
Juniors are now working hard on
‘A Shakespearean Mash-Up:
Part 2’, preparing for another
exciting performance on
Monday 27 June.

GIRLS’ CRICKET

BOYS’ CRICKET
The 1st team played Dorset last Saturday. Batting
first, Harri D (pictured) became the first girl in
Millfield Prep history to score a century for the
school. Congratulations from all
at Millfield Prep Sport! In 30 overs we posted a
commanding total of 202 runs. In reply our
fielding and bowling was superb as we restricted
Dorset to 62-10. Following on from the indoor
success, this was a great start to the season.
NB. FIXTURE CHANGE: Somerset v U13 Development side.
To be played on Sunday 19 June and NOT Saturday 18 June. Sorry for
any inconvenience caused.
GIRLS’ FOOTBALL
Above: Tom M, Adam S, Jamie B and Henry S in the winning
U12 district cricket team. Well done boys!
The U12 girls' football team travelled to Street FC to try and retain the
Somerset County Cup against Hugh Sexey's School. The game started
with a quick goal from Clarissa J, but Hugh Sexey's soon equalised.
Clarissa soon scored another goal, in a similar fashion to the first, and
some great passing from the team meant that Jess H and Charlotte T
followed up with the third and fourth goals.
The second half saw plenty of pressure from Millfield Prep but some
great defending from Hugh Sexey's meant that the score stayed at 4-1
until the last five minutes when Philippa L unleashed a vicious shot that
cannoned in off the defender. 5-1 to Millfield and a great Cup Final win.
Terrific football from the girls, well done!
Miss Newman
Above: Jamie B and Joseph E broke the school opening wicket
partnership with a undefeated 248 stand. Excellent work boys!
The mighty U12Cs have started the
season with a win, beating Monkton
Prep by two wickets, achieved by
Micah J hitting a four on the
penultimate ball of the game. Micah's
46, not out, more than doubled that of
their coach (Mr Seal's) best score of all
time.

ATHLETICS
Our athletes had their first outing last weekend with the Somerset
Combined Events Championships. The girls had a tough day in poor
conditions and we sadly picked up a few injuries. The boys had better
weather which allowed them to have a much easier day! Our Year 8 boys
were competing against the Year 9 boys and this was a shame.........for the
Year 9’s when our own Jami S (centre right) won the county title!
The athletics season is now underway and it will be the turn of the Juniors
this Friday, against our friends from Warminster Prep.
BOYS’ HOCKEY
The boys 1st team played in the West of England finals, we faced the
champions and runners-up from counties. In a tight first game the boys
started typically slowly before fighting back for a well-deserved draw. In
the second game we performed well defeating Sherborne 3-0. In the
following game we led against a side we would normally hope to defeat,
before letting an equaliser slip in thanks to a lack lustre performance.
Two further wins set up a semi-final against Dean Close with only the
winner proceeding to the National Finals. Dean Close converted then we
struck back before half-time. In a nervous second half we rather hung on
until sadly conceding with seconds remaining. Although we lost to Dean
Close really we paid the price for not delivering in the earlier group
games. As IAPS National Champions it is a great shame that we are not
playing in the National Schools Finals. However, we have had a
wonderful season and wish the girls’ team well. Mr Morgan-Hughes
GIRLS’ HOCKEY
As Somerset Champions the U11 VII girls played in the West of
England Finals during the first week back. We started superbly
with a great victory against a strong team from Red Maids in
Bristol. In the group stages we battled through to the semi-final
to play Colston’s School. In another strong performance we set
up a final re-match against Red Maids’. Sadly we began to tire
and the opposition ran out worthy winners. However it has
been a wonderful season and the girls are well set for the
hockey season starting in September. It has been a pleasure to
work with such a responsive group. Well done girls!

ROUNDERS
U11 National IAPS Team
Well done to the U11 team who travelled to St Peters, Exmouth for the
1st round of the IAPS National Cup. The girls had never played an all out
game before and were quick to learn and implement the different
strategies than a usual limited ball game. We set a high target with our
first innings scoring 26 rounders. We declared at this number with six
players still left in. It was then St Peter’s turn to bat but after some great
teamwork and fast thinking they were quickly on 0.5 with 3 out. St Peter’s
were eventually all out for 3. As they didn’t reach half of our score they
are then put back into bat. They returned stronger but with some
excellent fielding the girls remained calm and eventually got them all out
for 10. Final score 26-10 (with an innings to spare). Congratulations to all
the girls and thank you to Mrs Morgan-Hughes who umpired for us. We
await to hear who we play in the next round.

HOCKEY
Regional Hockey Finals - Thursday 21 April
The day was finally here, after training for two terms, the girls were
ready to take on the challenge of the England Hockey Regional
Finals. The girls knew that the first game is always the most
important in a tournament and after a nervous start and conceding
early, the girls eventually settled and demonstrated their sharp
shooting skills to win 5-1 v Castle Court.
They went on to beat West Buckland 2-0 and then came up against a
strong Dean Close team. The girls created opportunities but the
game finished 0-0. The forth game was against our nemesis, Red
Maids. The girls were prepared for a tough battle and the
determination and belief was clear to see. They played their best
hockey to date in every area of the pitch, creating chance after
chance and eventually winning 1-0. Unfortunately we lost our
extremely influential Polly due to an injury after this game, however
the girls dug deep and with a few tactical changes, they continued to
relax and win their final two games against Truro High 2-0 and The
Downs Malvern 3-0.
We had now won the group and had to face Cheltenham Ladies
College in the semi-final. A superb performance ended with a 3-0
win and a ticket to the Nationals! The day was not over yet, as we
still had the final to play against The Elms. Throughout the match,
the girls continued to create outstanding scoring opportunities, but
the match ended 1-1 and we progressed to nail biting penalty flicks.
Some great goal keeping and excellent clinical finishing, resulted in
Millfield Prep being crowned 'Regional Champions'.
I am extremely proud of all the girls and their performance
throughout the day. An exceptionally talented group of girls.
A huge thank you to Mr Keates, Mrs Hazell and Miss Lunn for all
their support on the day.

MULTI-SPORT
The National Triathlon Championships was held at Solihull on Saturday 23 April. We had two pupils
competing for Millfield Prep and it was a hugely successful day with both athletes coming home with
medals. Sophie M came 3rd in the U13 girls after a two second personal best time in the pool. Jack A
(pictured right) was the only competitor in the U13 boys to hit all the targets in the shooting
discipline. He also won the run with a phenomenal sprint finish. Well done you two!

May Fair  Monday 2 May
Two exciting trips for Pre-Prep this week; Reception to the Sealife
Centre and Year 1 to the zoo. As ever we were complimented on their
manners and excellent behaviour by members of the public. This is
such a gratifying thing to hear as a Head. We work hard to encourage
our children to be polite, well-mannered and sensible when out and
about and it is clear that the children respond positively and rise to
those expectations. They are certainly great ambassadors for the PrePrep when they are out in the community. It also means that the staff
are keen to carry out more trips in the future, as the children make the
whole experience very pleasurable.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at May Fair on Monday. Let’s
hope the sun shines and we can have a wonderful day. The children
have been working hard on their dancing! Please donate any plants
that you can for our stall in aid of the RNLI Mayday appeal. Monday is
not too late! Thank you.
All welcome!

Another busy week in Pre-School.
On Friday the Pre-School children peeled their own carrots and ate them! We
talked about how carrots grow and decided to plant our own. This week the
children have been very busy planting carrot, tomato and lettuce seeds; they
carefully filled their pots halfway, added some seeds and popped a bit of
compost on top. The best bit was watering them! We are now waiting for our
seeds to grow and are making sure they have plenty of sunlight and water.
We'll keep you updated on their progress.
Wednesday's children had a great time using the large trampolines in the Sports
Hall. Mr Duke kindly took the lesson and before we knew it we had children
doing tuck and straddle jumps and seat drops! A HUGE thank you to Mr Duke...
...we will be back!

We’re Going on a Mammal Hunt!
What is a mammal? Year 1 have been learning about their features and how to identify them. They went to Bristol Zoo to see if they could
find some real live ones. They saw the lions being fed and looked at a lion’s skull. In the monkey jungle they saw how the monkeys moved
and that they use their hands and feet in the same way that humans use their hands. By lunch time they were all really hungry and they had
their picnic lunch while it snowed!
Reception’s Sealife Adventure
As part of our topic ‘Under the Sea’, Reception had an amazing visit to
Weymouth Sealife Centre on Monday. The children were lucky enough to see the
octopus playing with her toys and taking the lid off a jar to get the toys out!
There were many questions and the children have written some lovely
information books of their own. See more photos via the icon above.

Minis Playtime!
A warm welcome to all of our Minis at the beginning of the
summer term!
This week we met some new Mini friends and welcomed back
some of the familiar Minis faces from last term… Everyone had
a great first session exploring the room, playing with the toys
and making a mess with the shredded paper!
We shared a yummy snack of sandwiches and fruit then headed
outside for a play with the balls and before finishing up with a
sing song!
See you all next week for a fun packed morning based around
