How is a child’s Special Educational Needs identified in the Academy?
There are formal and informal ways of doing this. A child’s academic progress is
measured formally through a range of regular assessments. This will show
parents/carers and teachers areas where progress is below average. A child’s
Special Educational Needs can be identified informally through conversations with
parents/carers; observations by class teachers; exchanges of information from other
professionals. Either way as a need emerges further assessments are completed
and this is followed by planning, implementing and reviewing. This forms an AssessPlan-Do – Review cycle so a Graduated Approach is taken allowing provision to be
increased if their needs fall into a higher Range.
