HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Good for You, Good for Our Community arms are a rich part of Montgomery County’s local culture, history and beauty. Yet they are so much more than just pretty scenery. Farming families, whether new to the business or long-standing, preserve a way of life—while working landscapes provide fresh and healthy food for today’s citizens and future generations. F With a mission of preserving and connecting our natural areas, farmland and neighborhood green spaces, Montgomery County Lands Trust helps farmers and Mother Nature yield healthy benefits. Much of our best local farmland, however, continues to be under threat of development. Many consumers— out of habit—gravitate toward purchasing pre-packaged foods shipped from around the world even when a delicious, convenient alternative is possible. The Trust and our partners believe it is important to not only link our citizens to local food but also to provide you with a real connection to the land where our carrots, corn and strawberries are grown and directly to the growers themselves. A rising number of farm stands and farm markets exist throughout the county. However, they will only remain an asset for us if the land can remain in active agriculture, thereby escaping conversion to housing developments or shopping centers. Our local farms will be sustained and prosper by economic support from the surrounding families who know about them, can locate them, and are motivated to purchase local food. Shop Local Save Land provides you with a guide to making informed choices about the food you eat, with the recognition that buying local helps to maintain and support Montgomery County’s important farming economy. Sincerely, Dulcie Flaharty Executive Director Montgomery County Lands Trust mclt.org 1 Farms 1. A.G. ASA, C&G, FPP, MCFB Montgomery County Farmland Preservation Program Since 1990 Montgomery County has made a commitment to assisting our county’s farming communities by creating opportunities for preserving and maintaining working farms as a valued economic, cultural and natural resource. The Montgomery County Farmland Preservation Program makes it possible for eligible farmers to hold on to their land and to continue their farming operation by selling an agricultural easement. When the easement is sold, the owner keeps the land but no longer has the right to build non-agricultural buildings. The land must remain in farming in perpetuity. If the farmer later sells the land, the new owner must continue to grow productive crops or pastures. Applying to the program is voluntary. As of October 2011, 140 farms have been approved for permanent preservation, for a total of 8,379 acres of county farmland that will never be developed. Those farmers who are interested in preserving their land are encouraged to submit an application to Elizabeth Emlen. t: 610-278-3754 e: [email protected] 23. PASA, WIC HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Montgomery County Lands Trust Pennsylvania Farm Bureau – Montgomery County Montgomery County Lands Trust is your county land trust, working to ensure that today’s citizens and generations to come enjoy the benefits of the cherished farm landscapes and critical natural areas that are permanently protected. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is a state-wide farm organization representing agriculture before government, while providing cost-saving services and helpful information to Pennsylvania’s farmers and rural families since 1950. Farm Bureau is a grass roots organization whereby its members decide and implement their policies for problem solving. The Trust was established in 1993 to advance the county open space program and to address the private aspects of land preservation. Through our Montgomery County Green Futures program we foster green, healthy communities through open space education. At the core of the Trust’s work are the individual land owners who seek to protect the land they own and love. We have directly preserved more than 2,810 acres and have partnered with others to protect an additional 2,255 acres. Montgomery County Lands Trust proactively preserves the best farmland, saves the most valuable wildlife habitat, and protects the stream corridors so important to the health of our region’s economy and water supply. Community education programs promoting the importance of agriculture are pursued through programs in schools, AgDays, farm shows and county events. Through its non-profit foundation, Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture, it operates six mobile agricultural education science labs which travel to schools statewide in Pennsylvania. The Foundation also awards agricultural scholarships which are available for the Penn State University College of Agricultural Sciences and Delaware Valley School of Agriculture. t: 717-761-2740 w: www.pfb.com Penn State Cooperative Extension – Montgomery County Montgomery County Open Space Program The Montgomery County Commissioners adopted the Open Space Program in 2003 following a voter referendum. The 10-year $150 million Green Fields/Green Towns initiative covers municipal and private organization grants, and county open space expenditures. Funds support farmland preservation, land acquisition, heritage resource conservation, green infrastructure, floodplain restoration, community trails, and implementation of the Schuylkill River Greenway. The county has used open space funds to develop an open space network. Projects include development and preservation of trails and greenways; capital improvements, planning, land acquisition and easements that expand, protect and enhance county parks, historic sites and natural areas; continuation and expansion of the farmland preservation program; and implementation of the Schuylkill River Greenway. Montgomery County Planning Commission Montgomery County Courthouse PO Box 311, Norristown, PA 19404-0311 t: 610.278.3722 w: http://www2.montcopa.org/montco/site/default.asp All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation’s more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities have a third critical mission—extension. “Extension” means “reaching out,” and, along with teaching and research, landgrant institutions such as Penn State “extend” their resources, solving public needs with college or university resources through non-formal, non-credit programs. These programs are administered through county and regional extension offices, which bring land-grant expertise to the most local of levels. Penn State Cooperative Extension’s mission is to enhance quality of life by providing informal outreach educational opportunities to individuals, families, businesses and communities throughout the Commonwealth. The Extension teaches people how to solve problems, do something better, live healthier, manage resources wisely, and create a sustainable future. 1015 Bridge Rd, Suite H, Collegeville, PA 19426 t: 610-489-4315 w: http://montgomery.extension.psu.edu 18
