FOOD CEofix Application Note 043103 CEofixTM ANIONS 2 PN 10-004640 EuroPN 844111039 ANALYSIS OF BROMATE IN MINERAL WATER using CEofix™ Anions2 1. Introduction Ozonation is an alternative to chlorination for disinfection of drinking water. While source water can contain bromide, the ozonation will tend to oxidize the bromide to bromate. Bromate has been judged by the US EPA and WHO as a potential carcinogen. Low level detection of bromate is therefore important for control of drinking water. 2. Method Bromate can be detected as inorganic anion by capillary electrophoresis using inverse polarity and direct UV detection at 200nm. Analyses were performed with P/ACE MDQ (Beckman Coulter) using UV filter detector at 200nm, fused silica capillary and CEofix™ Anions2 kit. We used standard method except for injection which was done electrokinetically for 20 seconds at 3 kV. As matrix we used a commercial available mineral water, containing following anions: Chloride 5 mg/L, SO4 4 mg/L, NO3 1.9 mg/L and HCO3 6 mg/L. This sample was spiked with 100 µg/L, 50 µg/L, 25 µg/L, 12.5 µg/L and 6.25 µg/L of fresh prepared BrO3. No further sample preparation was needed. Results Most anions present in mineral water such as HCO3 and SO4 are UV transparent or will absorb only at very high concentration such as chloride. NO3 , Br (not present in the sample) and BrO3 will absorb. BrO3 is very well separated and using electrokinetic injection low level at the µg/L can be detected. Linearity plot for spiked BrO3 in the analysed mineral water gave an excellent linearity between 100 µg/L and 5 µg/L with a R2 of 0.9985. Results can vary from one sample matrix to another as electrokinetic injection will give different results depending on the concentration of anions with an high mobility.
