Welcome to the
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a dynamic and modern university with two parkland campuses
in the Brussels-Capital Region. The main campus in Etterbeek is home to seven faculties. In
Jette you can find the medical campus and the University Hospital.
High quality education and research are central focal points. Our research teams are internationally recognised in many disciplines of fundamental and applied research. We offer quality
education to more than 9000 students. Add to that the almost 4500 students of our partner,
the Erasmushogeschool Brussels, the 400 students at the English-speaking Vesalius College, the
5000 students at the Centre for Adult Education that shares our campus, and the more than
150 research teams working on both our campuses, and you get one of the largest centres of
knowledge in the capital of Europe. Thanks to this expertise and its strategic location, the Vrije
Universiteit Brussel is your ideal partner for prestigious research and education with an outlook
on Europe and the world.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel gives you space to breathe, quite literally. The buildings of the Vrije
Universiteit Brussel are spread out across two pleasant green campuses. Activities mainly take
place in the many lecture halls and laboratories, all supplied with the most up to date equipment. Modern sports facilities with sports halls, fitness rooms, tennis and squash courts, and a
swimming pool can be found on site. The student restaurant offers a large choice of meals and
snacks at the self-service counters, and a refreshing beer can be tasted in the KultuurKaffee and
Opinio, two bars on campus. The two campuses, Etterbeek and Jette, are easy to reach by tram,
bus or metro from the city centre or the outskirts of Brussels. Those travelling by car can leave
their vehicle in one of the many covered car parks. Visitors travelling to campus Etterbeek by
train can get off at Etterbeek station right next to the campus.

Brussels is a historical centre. Whether you want to unravel the mysteries of Brussels by
exploring the Atomium, symbol of the 1958 Brussels world fair, or by checking out the different
outfits of the world famous Manneken Pis, discovering Brussels will yield many surprises.
Welcome to Brussels
Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The Brussels-Capital Region, one of
Belgium’s three regions, is also a city with 19 boroughs covering 162 km2 and housing a million
inhabitants. It is officially bilingual (French and Dutch), although it boasts an astonishing
variety of cultures, styles and nationalities.
Being the capital of an expanding Europe, Brussels is an international city like no other. 31%
of its population is of foreign origin, and this makes for a unique atmosphere in which cultures
interact easily with one another. English is rapidly becoming an important language in Brussels
because of the numerous international political organizations. Language is not a barrier in the
capital of Europe. These same differences and contrasts can be found in architectural Brussels'
various styles, where you will find Gothic cathedrals and churches next to beautiful art nouveau
and art deco houses. The Grand Place (Grote Markt), with its splendid guild houses and the
impressive Gothic beauty of its Town Hall, is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful
town squares in Europe.
2
Brussels is also a centre for the arts. Feel like delving into its rich cultural heritage? A wide
variety of museums, theatres, and concert halls will see to your every need. Grab a movie at
Kinepolis, one of the largest in Europe with 24 cinema theaters and a giant IMAX movie screen.
Catch a glimpse of the Eiffel tower, the Brandenburg Gate, and other miniature sized major
European monuments at MINI EUROPE. Or relive the adventures of Belgium’s comic book
heroes like Tintin and his dog Snowy at the Comic Book Museum.
Brussels is also a delight for your taste buds. Chocolate, delicious local cuisine, the smell of hot
waffles on a cold winter’s day, bars and pubs that never close… you’ll find it all. Belgium boasts
an incredible diversity of beers, many of them flavoured with herbs, spices and fruits.
A great many people work in Brussels. It is the headquarters of the European Commission, the
European Council, the European Parliament. The Brussels-Capital Region accounts for nearly
18% of all of Belgium’s exported goods and services. The compulsory medical insurance system
provides comprehensive coverage, making health care affordable for all. Patients have free
choice of hospital and insurance provider.
A lot of people study in Brussels. Education is free and compulsory until the age of 18. The
cost of attending university is very reasonable (especially compared to the US and the UK).
This investment in people pays off. In a 2001 study of the OESO, the Flemish Youth (aged 15)
held the world’s highest scores in mathematics, ending third in sciences (after Japan & North
Korea).

tutoring tailored
to your needs
To maintain our high educational standards, students anonymously assess their courses every
semester. Suggestions for improvement are carefully examined and adjustments are made
accordingly. And successfully so! The educational assessment for the academic year 2005-2006
indicated that the students were ‘satisfied’ to ‘very satisfied’ with 97% of the courses.
Educational TRAJECTORY
counselors
We do not only rely on our own assessment to monitor the quality of our education. External
experts also take part in the evaluation of the qualification standards.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel attaches great importance to helping students familiarize
themselves with university life and to providing good student guidance. The recent introduction
of a more flexible higher education system requires a new kind of student guidance. In order
to deal with these innovations, a special educational trajectory counselor has been appointed
for each faculty.
Students form the bedrock of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It therefore comes as no surprise
that our tutoring system serves as a model for other educational institutions. We conduct
tutorials, practicals and laboratory sessions in small interactive groups; our teaching assistants
and lecturers have an open-door policy. We make sure that every student enjoys the opportunity
for individual conversations with the teaching staff. For working students, unique tutoring
programmes are available.
University and diversity
For the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, diversity is vital to ensure equality and democracy. Women,
immigrants, people with disabilities, as well as people with monosexual or bisexual orientations
contribute to an open-minded atmosphere and a comfortable working environment in which
`different´ means `normal´. To assist this process, a Diversity Forum run by students and staff
gives the university authorities advice on diversity issues.

EUROPEAN STUDIES
The Institute for European Studies (IES) is an autonomous department of the Vrije Universiteit
Brussel. It was created in 2001 through an initiative taken by the Flemish Government.
It teaches advanced Master programmes, and focuses on interdisciplinary research in European
Studies, more specifically on the role of the EU in an international setting. Within this scope, it
provides academic services to scholars, policy makers and the general public.
The Institute’s central location in Brussels, capital of Europe, makes it a supreme workplace for
students and scholars wishing to conduct research in an international and interdisciplinary
setting. Benefiting from its location, the IES provides an ideal forum for conferences and workshops on European issues. Since 2003, the IES is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

Master of Nuclear Engineering
OUTLINE BNEN, the Belgian Nuclear Higher Education Network was created in 2001
by five Belgian universities (Université de Liège, Université Catholique de Louvain,
Universiteit Gent, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Vrije Universiteit Brussel) in
association with the Belgian nuclear research centre (SCK•CEN) in a joint effort to
maintain and further develop a high quality programme in nuclear engineering in
Belgium. The Master of Nuclear Engineering is a demanding programme where students
with high level backgrounds in engineering investigate highly theoretical subjects such
as neutron physics, fluid flow and heat transfer modelling, and apply them to reactor
design, nuclear safety and plant operation & control. At a more interdisciplinary level,
the programme includes important areas of material science, with a particular interest
in the fuel cycle. Radiation protection and nuclear measurements are included in the
programme. All subjects are taught by academics appointed by the partner universities,
while the practical exercises and laboratory sessions are supervised by members of the
researcher staff of SCK•CEN. The final thesis offers an opportunity for an internship in
industry or a research laboratory. BNEN grants are available for full-time students.
