Sample APA Pages - University of Colorado Denver

Running head: SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES
1
The page numbers are in
the upper right-hand
corner. Some instructors do
not want a page number on
the title page, so be sure to
ask.
A running head will appear at the top of every page, but the
words “Running head” will only appear on the title page.
The words “Running head” will be followed by a colon and
a shortened title in ALL CAPS.
For further information on creating the "Running head,"
please see the "Inserting Running Heads/Page Numbers in
Word" handout.

even then, only for some instructors).
Here you will place the class
information such as the course

submission.
SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES
Notice how this header (and those on subsequent pages) does not
say "Running head." Remember, this only appears on the title page.
Only the ALL CAPS shortened title appears on the other pages in

If required, the abstract is immediately after the title page. The word
"Abstract" will be centered and bolded at the top. The body of the abstract
will be left justified (aligned with the left margin). The first line is not indented.
It will contain a brief summary (250 to 500 words) of the entire paper and will
be double-spaced. Some instructors also prefer this page to be called
"Executive Summary" and may have different word count requirements.
Here are the basic capitalization rules for titles and headers:
1. Capitalize the first word of the title/heading and of any subtitle/
subheading.
2. Capitalize all “major” words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and
pronouns) in the title/heading, including the second part of hyphenated
major words.
3. Capitalize all words of four letters or more.
(See additional capitalization rules for subheadings on the next page.)

The full title of the paper will be centered on the first full page. It is not bolded, underlined,
or italicized. In traditional APA format, the introductory section is not titled "Introduction."

This is the introduction. It is not labeled. It will conform to standard paragraph formatting with only
the first line indented half an inch. In all APA documents, everything is double-spaced. Provide the introduction
to the whole paper in this section.
Methods
Major section headers (Level 1) will be centered in
