Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition is a mathematics competition
for students from Year 3 up to Year 12. It was established in 1978 and
currently has approximately 600,000 participants, making it the world's
largest mathematics competition.
The competition paper consists of twenty-five multiple-choice
questions, which are ordered in increasing difficulty. For high school
there are three divisions in total: Senior (for Years 11 and 12),
Intermediate (for Years 9 and 10), and Junior (for Years 7 and 8).
Students are allowed 75 minutes to read and answer the questions.
Calculators are not permitted, but geometrical aids such as rulers,
compasses, and paper for working are permitted.
Awards are broken into the following categories:

Ancient Chinese Museum
Recently our Year 7 history classes opened their classrooms up to
staff, other students and parents for the school’s Annual Ancient
Chinese Museum, showcasing the amazing artefacts created as part of
their history and technology assessment. This artefact is created to
reflect their research in history and assessed as part of their
technology program. The work students produced was outstanding.

This year, we are continuing our participation in the 2016 Nationally Consistent
Collection of Data on Students with Disability. All schools in Australia are
required to participate in the data collection. The new national data collection
will reinforce the actions required of schools under the National Disability
Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. The
significant change with this collection is the use of a broader definition of
disability than the one currently used to identify and allocate resources in
education systems. The information provided by this new data collection will
enable all Australian Governments to better target support and resources to
assist students with disability in both government and non-government schools.

Indonesian Update
The attendance for the
Monday afternoon Indonesian
classes has been increasing
steadily, with the number of
students doubling since the
first week. Currently, the
5-6pm session is the most
popular, with many teachers
from our school and people
from our community attending
the classes. This week the
students participated in some
recipe-based learning, which I
was told was enak sekali
(very delicious). Some games
were also played
incorporating their learned
language, which was a lot of
fun!
If students are interested in
trying out these classes,
please come along to T3 of the Languages Centre from 3-4pm.
Primary school students and their parents are also welcome from
4-5pm. The classes are free of charge.

student, Chloe Williamson
who has been successful in
receiving a placement on the
2016 Shanghai International
Sister Cities Youth
Camp. This program is
organised by Education
Queensland International and
Chloe is 1 of 5 recipients from
the state. Chloe has been
studying Chinese for 5 years
and this will be a wonderful
international learning opportunity for her to be fully immersed in a
Chinese language and cultural environment and put all those learned
skills into practice!
In July, Chloe will be spending 2 weeks in Shanghai where she will be
engaged in Chinese lessons and traditional Chinese culture classes.
Chloe will experience a homestay and sightseeing in Shanghai
including the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium,
Shanghai Nature History Museum and Yu Gardens. We wish Chloe a
safe trip, making new friends and gaining a deeper understanding of
the Chinese language and culture and look forward to reading her
report on her return.

On Monday 30 May, 125 students from Cleveland, Bayview, Ormiston,
Dunwich, Thornlands and Mt Cotton State Schools visited Cleveland
District State High School for a day filled with language fun. Students
participated in a variety of activities, ranging from Chinese calligraphy
and paper cutting, singing body parts in French, to Matisse paper
cutting and making Japanese hachimaki (headbands) and origami.
Not only did students learn various terms and experience Japanese,
Chinese and French culture, they also tasted it – literally. A lavish and
abundant lunch was enjoyed by all, which included Chinese spring
rolls, fried rice, Japanese sushi, French baguette and quiches.
Students also had fruit for dessert and a chocolate croissant for
morning tea.
After lunch the students enjoyed cultural performances including the
Can Can Dance and Chinese Lion Dancing by Cleveland District State
High senior students as well as an Aikido, Japanese martial arts
demonstration by Takemusu Aikido Kai Redlands Dojo. The students
were very impressed by the graceful martial art which aims to restore
harmony to conflict situations without relying on physical strength.
The feedback at the end of the day was overwhelmingly positive.
“Today was one of the best times I’ve ever had.” “The food was
amazing and I hope to come to this school. Staff are awesome.”
“Today was very exciting and fun and made me feel motivated to learn
French.” were just a few of the comments students provided on their
feedback forms. Overall, the Languages Fun Day was a fabulous
opportunity for the Year 6 students to engage with others through their
interest in learning languages and also gain an understanding of the
opportunities offered by the Languages Department at Cleveland
District State High School.

Our 8th annual Walk for Hope will be held during school hours on
Wednesday 22 June. This is our main fundraiser for supporting our
school trip to Vanuatu. With the 2016 team leaving at the end of the
month, the funds raised will go towards making an immediate
difference in Pango, Tovu Tovu and Tiasia Primary Schools. By
participating in, and donating to our walk-a-thon, you are helping us
bring the hope of a brighter future to many ni-Vanuatu children living in
poverty.
The Walk For Hope is a two part challenge. Firstly, we are challenging
every student to walk as many laps of the oval as they can in one hour.
Secondly, every student is challenged to raise $20 to help children
living in poverty. Everyone who meets these challenges will receive a
unique thank you gift, as well as an entry in the draw to win one of four
VIP Theme Park Passes or four movie passes.
For the first time this year there will be three prizes for the three
students who raise the most money. Our top fundraiser will win a
wonderful BYOD-compatible Lenovo laptop generously donated by
Aliva, one of our school’s recommended BYOD vendors. Second prize
is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite and our third highest fundraiser will
win four movie passes donated by Cineplex, Victoria Point.
In addition, our donors also stand to win! For every $5 donated, donors
go in a draw to win a $355 prize package. This prize includes a
wonderful Mantra Mooloolaba Getaway from Andrew Laming MP
($250), a Patrick Kilvington ‘The Bronc Ride’ Print ($80) donated by
Frederiks Accountants and a CC Café Voucher ($25). We thank our
donors for their support.
We encourage all students to participate, raise a few dollars and make
a difference in the lives of children living in poor communities in
Vanuatu.
Thank you
Chappy Neale and the 2016 Vanuatu Mission Team

Vitamin D and Teenagers
A Message from Your School Nurse.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D forms in the skin when it is exposed to UV from sunlight. It
can also be obtained from some foods. We need vitamin D to maintain
good health and to keep bones and muscles strong and healthy.
What type of sunlight provides the best vitamin D?
Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is required for vitamin D3
(cholecalciferol) to be produced. Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin
once your unprotected skin receives exposure to sunlight’s UV rays.
The sun emits three different types of radiation, UVA, UVB and UVC.
The ozone layer is good at blocking all of the UVC radiation and most
of the UVB, however, none of the UVA radiation. The UVA penetrates
deep into the skin and can cause aging and wrinkles. UVB can cause
sunburn and acceleration of skin aging. UVB radiation from the sun is
also the best source of vitamin D.
Obtaining the balance of sufficient sunshine for vitamin D production
whilst practicing safe sun exposure is important.
Why are teens at risk of vitamin D deficiency?
Some people may not be able to access the sun exposure required to
help them maintain their vitamin D levels. These groups may be at risk
of vitamin D deficiency. In particular people who live indoors, and don’t
engage in outdoor activities are at a higher risk of Vitamin D
Deficiency.
Aim to spend 5 to 10 minutes outdoors in the early morning to increase
your uptake of vitamin D early morning sun feels good on your skin and
