RECORD-SETTING TATTS OPENER
Bidding wars between Sheikh Mohammed and John
Magnier have been a rarity in recent years, but racing=s
two superpowers went head-to-head during the
opening session of Tattersalls= October Sale over lot
161, a colt by Darley=s exciting young sire Raven=s Pass
out of Galileo (Ire)=s first Group 1 winner, the Irish 1000
Guineas heroine Nightime (Ire). Sheikh Mohammed
came out best on the first-day topper, going to
800,000gns through his bloodstock advisor John
Ferguson to secure the March-foaled chestnut colt, one
of 13 yearlings he bought during the opening session
for a total of 3,350,000gns. The combination of hefty
spending sprees by Sheikh Mohammed and John
Magnier, who purchased seven yearlings for
2,740,000gns, helped to push the day=s aggregate to a
record figure for a single day=s trade at October Book 1
of 23,016,000gns. The previous high of 19.1 million
gns was set in 2009.
With 139 of the 174 yearlings offered changing
hands, the clearance rate fell two points to 80%, but
the median was up by 10% on the corresponding
session last year at 110,000gns, with the average also
rising, by 9.5%, to 165,583 guineas.
Commenting on his most expensive purchase of the
day, who was bred by Marguerite Weld and offered by
The Castlebridge Consignment, Ferguson said, ARaven=s
Pass has done very well, and not only have we been
delighted with [G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. winner]
Steeler, but there are lots in the pipeline coming
through and showing all the right signs.
Lot 161
tattersalls.com
AOn top of that, you have a breeder like Mrs. Weld,
who has consistently produced top horses over the
years and she must be congratulated for that. We=ve
seen this horse at home and he has thrived and thrived
over the summer. To have a Raven=s Pass out of a
Guineas winner from a top breeder, this just made
sense--he=s an outstanding individual.@
Having ended the first day as leading buyer, Ferguson
added, AEurope has a phenomenal team of young and
proven stallions at the moment, so as a result you can
have a book of this size and there is quality right the
way through it.@

California Dreamin’ at Tatts
California-based owner Jon Kelly was shut out
on several lots during Tuesday’s opening day of
bidding at Tattersalls, but ended up the successful
bidder on a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-brother to
champion Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley), who
will be turned over to Luca Cumani in
Newmarket. "That is a beautiful horse. He
competes with every top colt I own," said Kelly,
known best in the States for campaigning the likes
of Borrego and Vacare.

Aracis Turn Sellers at Tatts
Pinar Araci has become a familiar face at the sales
alongside her father Ibrahim in recent years, investing
in high-quality stock both for the racecourse and the
breeding shed, including the Group 3 winner Native
Khan (Fr) (Azamour {Ire}). This year, however,
marked the first time that the Turkish investor has
turned consignor at the European yearling sales,
offering a Dubawi colt (Ire) (lot 77) yesterday through

Bernardini Filly Tops Saratoga Sale
Fasig-Tipton's inaugural Saratoga Fall Mixed Sale was held Tuesday, with
Closing Move, a 3-year-old Bernardini filly, topping the proceedings courtesy
of a $100,000 bid from trainer Tom Voss. All told, 119 head successfully
changed hands for a gross of $1,933,600, while 82 were led out unsold. The
average was $16,249 and the median was $12,000. “I thought it was good and
competitive," said Boyd Browning, president of the auction house. "I think
there was broad bidding, and it worked reasonably well for the first try”

Montjeu’s Name Lives On...
He may be gone, but this sales season, the Coolmore
team has certainly kept Montjeu=s name in lights and,
on the first day of Book 1, a colt by the late dual Derby
and Arc winner led the early trade when selling for
700,000 guineas to Demi O=Byrne.
Consigned by Croom House Stud, whose three lots
sold at the opening session recorded an average of
511,677gns, the March-foaled son of the Machiavellian
mare Lucina (GB) (lot 88) hails from the family of Group
1 winners Luso (GB) and Warrsan (Ire).
O=Byrne also ensured that Newsells Park Stud=s
Montjeu colt out of the Linamix (Fr) mare Honorlina (Fr)
(lot 18) will be heading towards Ballydoyle when seeing
off Californian-based buyer Jon Kelly on a bid of
450,000gns.
One of the most eagerly anticipated lots on the first
day was the first yearling out of Lord Derby=s champion
racemare Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) to be
offered for sale, and the Galileo (Ire) colt (lot 172), a
half-brother to the listed-placed Voodoo Prince, was
another on Magnier=s shopping list. Knocked down to
O=Byrne for 525,000gns, he helped to boost Galileo=s
average for the day to 270,625gns for 16 yearlings
sold. The most expensive among them was a daughter
of the listed-winning Oasis Dream (GB) mare La Sylvia
(Ire), who was knocked down to Grant PritchardGordon of Badgers Bloodstock for 570,000gns.
Reluctant to reveal the identity of his client,
Pritchard-Gordon said, AShe=s for one of Ed Dunlop=s
existing clients and I=m pretty sure she will go to Ed to
be trained. He was particularly looking for a Galileo filly
and this one was not only beautiful, but looked like she
might be a bit earlier than some others. She=s out of an
Oasis Dream mare and we hope she might be out as a
2-year-old.@
He added, AGalileo is the most outstanding stallion in
the world--the best I=ve seen in my lifetime and even
better than his sire. In my opinion we should be
stockpiling his offspring. That=s certainly what I say if
clients ask.@
Californian Dreaming of Classic Glory...
Jon Kelly, buying through Jamie McCalmont, was not
deterred by several unsuccessful attempts early in the
day to join the list of purchasers and was delighted to
be the winning bidder on the Sea The
Stars colt out of Musical Treat (lot
144) to the tune of 500,000gns--the
top price achieved by the first-season
stallion on the day. The half-brother
to the dual Classic winner Finsceal
Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley) will be trained
in Newmarket by Luca Cumani, as
Jon Kelly
will a colt by Galileo (Ire) out of the
tattersalls.com
listed-winning Darshaan (GB) mare
Moments Of Joy (GB) ) (lot 132),
whom Kelly secured for 275,000gns. Cont. p5

Shadwell Also to the Fore...
AThat is a beautiful horse. He competes with every
top colt I own,@ Kelly said of the Sea the Stars colt.
Pointing to his vet alongside him, he added, AThe last
horse he wanted me to buy happened to be named
Camelot (Ire).@
Yearlings by Sea the Stars have attracted plenty of
attention all season and nine of the 11 from his first
crop offered--which averaged 277,778gns--found
buyers, with Charlie Gordon-Watson being of the
opinion that he had secured the best of them.
AThis was the nicest of the Sea The Stars yearlings in
the sale and the one who was most like him,@ he said
after bidding 475,000gns for lot 140, the half-brother
to G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches winner Elusive Wave
(Ire) (Elusive City) on behalf of owner/breeder Bjorn
Nielsen. Describing the bay colt as Aa fantastic
individual,@ Gordon-Watson confirmed that he
is to be trained in Lambourn by David Lanigan, who is
based at Nielsen=s Kingsdown Stables.
Sheikh Hamdan invested heavily at Keeneland=s
September Sale and, along with his brother Sheikh
Mohammed, he was present at Park Paddocks to
oversee the purchase of
three colts and a filly for
1.25 million gns. Top of the
bunch was lot 84, a Teofilo
(Ire) half-brother to Group 3
winner Dunboyne Express
(Ire) (Shamardal) and to
Race and Status (Ire)
(Raven=s Pass), who has
won and been placed since

Norris Delighted with Teofilo Sale...
Just three days after his half-brother finished third in
Saturday=s ,500,000 Tattersalls Million 2yo Trophy
sales race, Jockey Hall Stud=s Teofilo (Ire) colt proved
just as popular in the sales ring, eventually being
snapped up by Shadwell
Estates. At 600,000gns, he
became the most expensive
yearling of his sire sold at
auction.
The March foal was offered
on behalf of the County
Westmeath breeder John
Connaughton by Jacqueline
Norris=s Jockey Hall Stud.
Jacqueline Norris
Norris was confident that the
tattersalls.com
colt would prove a popular
draw, but his final price tag was a welcome surprise.
AWe sold his brother [Race and Status] here last year,
who I thought was very special, and he made
240,000gns. This colt=s been flat to the boards with
people looking at him, but he=s just such a gorgeous
horse,@ Norris said.
AIt=s a great thrill for myself of course, but I=m just so
pleased for the breeder who has supported us so well,@
she added. AThere is a great team behind it; Mr.
Connaughton=s great friend Ted Naughton helps select
the mares and John O=Shea is the farm manager. The
breeder has put together a lovely bunch of mares, and
he races his horses as well.@

through the outstanding draft of
Highclere Stud.
Out of an unraced full-sister to
the GI Hollywood Starlet S.
Ibrahim Araci
heroine Diplomat Lady, the colt
tattersalls.com
was bought in utero when Pinar
purchased his dam, Lion Forest
(Forestry), for i160,000 at the Goffs November Mares=
Sale in 2010.
Since then, the young mare has produced a filly by
Sea The Stars (Ire), and is now back in foal to Oasis
Dream (GB).
AI bought her both for her pedigree and for the
Dubawi covering,@ Pinar Araci explained. AObviously if I
had bought her just for the covering, I would have sold
her as well, but I=m spending a bit of money on her and
she is a gorgeous mare.@
Lion Forest=s Dubawi son attracted the attention of
John Ferguson, who went to 260,000gns to secure the
February-born colt.
AHe is a gorgeous colt,@ his breeder says. AAs a foal,
he was more like his grandad, Dubai Millennium (GB),
who I am told used to stick his tongue out; this colt
would walk around the field with his tongue hanging
out!@
Araci has two more colts to sell, both on Thursday,
including a Cape Cross (Ire) half-brother to the highclass filly and producer Zanziberine (lot 391) and an
Invincible Spirit (Ire) colt out of an unraced half-sister to
the Royal Ascot winner Festivale (Ire), by the same sire.
Araci has enjoyed success as an owner this year with
Khubala (Ire), a hat-trick winner under the care of Ed
Dunlop, and her colours may well be carried next year
by a Sea The Stars colt purchased by her father
yesterday for just 75,000gns.
Of the half-brother to the G1 Moyglare S. winner
Preseli (Ire) and the high-class duo Kong (Ire) and Mount
Kilimanjaro (Ire), Araci said, AI didn=t even know we=d
bought him until 10 minutes after he had been in the
ring, but he was very cheap at that price.@
Ouija Board Stars Again...
The Derby family enjoyed numerous red-letter days
courtesy of the star mare Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross
{Ire}), and another page was added to the memory
book yesterday when a Galileo (Ire) colt out of the
seven-time Group 1 winner was purchased by John
Magnier for 525,000gns.
As the first of Ouija Board=s three foals to date to be
offered at public auction, it could have been a
bittersweet moment, but connections were happy with
the result.
AWe=re absolutely delighted,@ Lord Derby, owner of
Ouija Board, commented immediately after the sale.
AJohn Magnier obviously knows the sire very well, and,
although I am biased, I thought the colt looked
absolutely fantastic! The team at Stanley House have
done a great job with him.@
Although Ouija Board=s own race record speaks for
itself, it certainly did not hurt that the mare=s first foal,
the Kingmambo colt Voodoo Prince (GB), gained blacktype at the end of September when third in the Listed
Foundation S. at Goodwood.
AIt was great that Voodoo Prince picked up the blacktype last week. I wish Mr. Magnier the best of luck
with him,@ Lord Derby added.
Lord Derby=s brother Peter Stanley, owner of Stanley
House Stud where Ouija Board resides and which
consigned the colt, added, AWe=re thrilled that he is
going to such a good home. You never know what
they=re going to make at public auction, but he is a
lovely colt.@
Ouija Board is in foal to Dubawi (Ire), while her
2-year-old daughter Filia Regina (GB), also by Galileo, is
currently on a break at Stanley House Stud, having
been in training with Ed Dunlop.

Brook Stud Hoping for Golden Moment...
Bloodstock agent Dwayne Woods is a familiar sight at
the sales, but Wednesday marks the first time that a
consignment of yearlings has been offered for sale by
his Brook Stud, near Newmarket.
AWe=ve been selling yearlings for 20 years, and have
always prepped our own, but someone else has taken
them up to the sales,@ Woods explained. ALast year we
decided to do our own for the first time, and we had a
really good December Foal sale, so we=re going from
there.@
Two of the trio on offer during Book 1 are from the
first yearling crop bred by Andrew Tinkler, CEO of the
Eddie Stobart transport company, headlined by a fullbrother to Tinkler=s G2 Celebration Mile victor Dubawi
Gold (GB) (lot 240).
AHe=s an absolute star, a really beautiful horse,@
Woods enthused. AHe=s had at least 200 looks this
week, but he still comes out every time and gives a
great show.@
Woods was also active as a buyer at yesterday=s sale
on behalf of Tinkler, snapping up a Galileo (Ire) colt
from the Hascombe & Valiant Stud draft for
110,000gns.
The colt is from the outstanding family of Inchmurrin
(Ire), from which also hails Tinkler=s G3 Irish St Leger
Trial winner Ursa Major (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who went
on to run fourth in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster
last month.
AHe=s a nice horse and of course we=ve had a lot of
luck with the family,@ Woods says of his purchase.
AUrsa Major will be a really smart horse for next year.@

No apologies are necessary for the heavy emphasis on Galileo at this
year’s Tattersalls Book One, as the sire of sires has never had an
assembly like this at a public auction. Alluring Park--whose dam, the
champion Park Express (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) has entered folklore as
the dam of New Approach (Ire)--produced Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who
has become one of those rare million guineas-plus yearlings to win a
Classic this year.

SOLID TRADE
In yesterday=s session, 139 yearlings were listed as
sold for the equivalent of $38.6-million and an average
a little over $278,000. Thirteen yearlings--not quite one
in 10 of those which sold--brought final bids of
450,000gns (roughly $756,000) or more. These were
by nine different sires (Galileo 3, Montjeu and Sea The
Stars 2 each, six others with one each), and were
purchased by 10 different buyers (Demi O=Byrne 3,
John Ferguson 2, eight others with one each). It looked
and felt like a pretty good spread of high-end players. If
they end up with $100-million in sales and 30+
yearlings selling for $750,000-plus, I think--as
expected--October Book 1 will be hands-down the
international yearling sale of the year.
Of course, the presence of Galileo and his
half-brother Sea The Stars helps. Between the two
yesterday, they had 35 catalogued, of which 32 went
through the ring, and 25 were sold, averaging
270,400gns (about $454,272). Sea The Stars, with
nine sold from 11 offered, slightly out-averaged his
older brother; his average was 277,778gns ($466,667),
whereas Galileo had 16 sell, from 21 offered, for an
average of 266,250gns ($447,300)--not much in it,
really.
Two other notes from yesterday=s session: of course,
you are all wondering if Georgia Dollar=s incredible
pastry collection, presented and overseen by coffee
wizard Isobel Anthony in the Newsells Park box,
wowed the judges for at least the third or fourth
consecutive year, and of course the answer is yes.
There is strong competition from Castlebridge (they=re
especially keen on their carrot cake) and Highclere, who
also made the finals. I suggest a tour of the grounds for
anybody with any reason to be in the neighborhood
today or tomorrow--but just make very sure Newsells
Park is on your >look list.= Oh, and I have a message
from ace French trainer Freddy Head, here on the
grounds at Tattersalls, to the connections of Wise Dan,
who are reportedly debating whether to run in the
GI Breeders= Cup Mile on the turf or the 10-furlong
GI Breeders= Cup Classic on the dirt--well, really, I
should call it >a word to the Wise=: ARun in the Classic,@
advises Freddy. >My filly [Moonlight Cloud] is very
good.@ OK? Message delivered.

RACETRACK ROUND-UP
Prince Will I Am Set for International...
Casa Farms I LLC=s Prince Will I Am (Victory Gallop)
is set to make his second start off a 14-month layoff in
Sunday=s GI Pattison Canadian International S. at
Toronto=s Woodbine Racetrack. The ridgling, a maiden
winner in seven starts on the main track, turned the
corner with a switch to the infield, winning a Saratoga
allowance ahead of a 9-1 upset of the GI Jamaica H. in
2010. Second in an eventful running of the
GIII Breeders= Cup Marathon that November, he
returned to the turf for scores in the GII W.L. McKnight
H. and the GII Mac Diarmida S. ABetween the Mac
Diarmida and the Jamaica he showed his predisposition
for being a good turf horse,@ said trainer Michelle Nihei.
ABoth days were different in the way he brought himself
into the race. In the Jamaica, it was his standard, way
back, coming from out of it at the end, closing in :10
and change. In the Mac Diarmida, he put himself in the
race a little bit better sitting fourth or fifth and took a
bit of a run at them at the top of the lane. It's a little bit
shorter stretch [at Gulfstream, compared to Belmont] so
he had to get to that point a little bit earlier in the race.@
Sidelined off a ninth in the GI Manhattan H. last
summer, he returned to action with an even sixth to
Dominus (Smart Strike) in the GII Bernard Baruch H. at
the Spa Sept. 1. Prince Will I Am will be ridden in the
International by top local jockey Luis Contreras. ALuis
has ridden horses for me [in the morning] at Gulfstream
in the winter time, so we have a communicative
relationship,@ said Nihei. AI like Luis a lot. He's a
professional and talented rider. And, obviously, this
horse isn't selective about who he gets along with. You
can put almost anybody on him.@

HORSES AND PAYING FOR THEM
By Richard Zachariah
Throughout history, whether it was Lord Derby or
Stavros Niarchos, funding the world=s great breeding
farms and racing stables has always come down to the
benevolence and deep pockets of the proprietor.
Or, as Darley Australia=s latest company report
describes Sheikh Mohammed, >the ultimate
shareholder.=
And according to TDN=s recent forensic dismantling
of the Kentucky sales figures, nothing is about to
change for breeders large and small with $200 million
bled all over the Bluegrass. This is no fairytale, TDN
readers say, pointing out all the natural obstacles, not
to mention elevated stud fees and last minute X- rays
that wage war on profitability.
As a breeder, I didn=t need to be told, but my
curiosity of how anyone in this business makes it pay is
always on green alert. So it was on a golden weekend
for Darley with their 3-year-olds dominating the first
Group 1 of the season and three of their stallions in the
top five--nine in the top 30--I got hold of the annual
accounts that I hoped would throw light on how the
world=s largest breeder makes ends meet.
Well, of course, he doesn=t--and just as Lord Derby or
Niarchos did in their time--an equine indulgence is
something the Dubain Prince can and wants to afford.
In Australia alone, Sheikh Mohammed has poured in
over A$1 billion, and in the company report released in
April, Darley had accumulated losses of $425 million.
While this reinforces the importance of >the ultimate
shareholder,= the figures are difficult to interpret in an
operating culture where lack of resources is not an
excuse. Yet Darley Australia is, according to finance
director Andrew Wiles, conscious of the bottom line,
even if it=s not the boss= obsession.
And it=s not all bad, Wiles points out, when you take
into account that in 2008, the Sheikh paid the Ingham
family A$460 million for our biggest racing and
breeding operation and has spent tens of millions
developing new studs in NSW and Victoria and recently
built a show-place training establishment outside
Sydney.
Despite rumors from Dubai that the Sheikh cared little
for what happened down under--he has only visited
Australia once since his major expansion in 2008--and
after five years, if it wasn=t working he would walk
away, I found the management here resolutely opposed
to the scuttlebutt.
Managing director Henry Plumptre, an Englishman
who has been in Australia long enough to know his
way around and to have survived a stint as bloodstock
manager for the irascible racing aficionado Lloyd
Williams, reckoned it was a safe bet that anyone who
spent a billion plus was here for the long haul.
And Plumptre doesn=t have to gild the lily. While their
aim to establish >a self sustainable operation on a cash
basis within the short to medium term= is ambitious,
last year Darley suffered a loss of just A$7 million, a
long way from a reported A$246 million black hole in
2008 after a savage revaluation of livestock values.
The reality is Darley is doing well, both in the
breeding barn and the racetrack. In 2010/11 season
Darley race horses, led by outstanding colts Sepoy
(Elusive Quality) and Helmet (Exceed and Excel) earned
A$18 million in prize money and went a long way
towards paying for the racing division.
And in the breeding barn, with a combination of its
shuttle stallions and those colonials it bought from the
Ingham=s, Darley has shed it=s little lost brother look of
a decade or more ago and is now very much in the
vanguard of Australia=s most popular destination for
mare owners.
It hasn=t been an overnight sensation, nothing is in
bloodstock, but it seems to have come with a rush. In
stellar year 2010/11 Darley=s success on the track was
capped by Lonhro (Octaganol) taking out the sires
premiership, a major achievement considering he had
finished 44th only two seasons before. Cont. p14
TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/10/12 • PAGE 14 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
Zachariah cont.
While Lonhro won, Danehill sons Commands and
Exceed and Excel and shuttlers Elusive Quality (Gone
West) and Street Cry (Machiavellian) finished well up in
the top 20. While the visitors provided the all-important
Golden Slipper winner that year and the Melbourne Cup
hero of a couple years previously, suddenly Darley was
a leading commercial influence, only shaded by
Coolmore, who had five stallions in the first 20,
although one of them, Galileo (Sadler=s Wells) had
ceased live appearances in Australia.
And the Darley juggernaut shows no sign of slowing.
While Commands currently leads the sires table,
Lonhro, through his son Pierro, increases his visibility,
albeit not in a way that would be the favored choice of
Sheikh Mohammed and his team. Pierro who goes into
this weekend=s stallion-making race, the 1600-meter
G1 Caulfield Guineas, as red-hot favorite and aiming to
be one of the rarest colts--a Golden Slipper and W. S.
Cox Plate winner, is the one that got away.
Although Sheikh Mohammed has an international
reputation as a fearless hunter, gatherer and collector
of Thoroughbreds, he is also at times a seller. In
Australia, Darley markets a draft of 40 foals each
autumn/winter in order to create interest in the
stallions, and, according to Plumptre, >a couple of
outstanding weanlings are included to lead the pack.=
And so it was the handsome son of Lonhro--Miss
Right Note (Daylami) was selected to head up the 2011
Magic Millions draft. He was snapped up by a
pinhooker for A$120,000 and re-sold later as a yearling
for A$230,000 to femme fatale and trainer
extraordinaire Gai Waterhouse.
The yearling of course has blossomed under Ms.
Waterhouse into the eight-time undefeated Pierro, now
conservatively valued at A$25 million and with more
financial upside and maybe an international career if
and when he wins the Guineas and Cox Plate double.
Given their time over again, the Darley team, of
course, would love to have left the Miss Right Note foal
on the pastures of their Hunter Valley nursery. But
comforted by the fact they still own the mare and what
he is doing for his sire, it will be felt at the cash register
of forthcoming yearling markets.
Not that anybody at Darley made a glaring mistake.
The undistinguished Miss Right Note (Ire) was bred by
Darley in Europe and raced in France and Australia with
a singular lack of distinction over unfashionable long
distances.
Plumptre admits >the plain grey mare= was an also-ran
in the popularity contest between Darley matrons, but
has now shot up the poll since delivering the champion
son to Lonhro. A bit like the whole Darley operation
itself, Pierro is heading up the charts with a red bullet
and helping Sheikh Mohammed=s Aussie team make
ends meet.

AROUND THE WORLD
BERNARDINI FILLY TOPS INAUGURAL FALL
MIXED SALE Fasig-Tipton's inaugural Saratoga Fall
Mixed Sale was held Tuesday, with Closing Move, a
3-year-old Bernardini filly, topping the proceedings
courtesy of a $100,000 bid from trainer Tom Voss. All
told, 119 head successfully changed hands for a gross
of $1,933,600, while 82 were led out unsold. The
average was $16,249 and the median was $12,000.
"I thought it was good and competitive," said Boyd
Browning, president of the auction house. "I think there
was broad bidding, and it worked reasonably well for
the first try. The market is still very difficult on mares
with a little bit of age that don't have a significant or
important horse in the production record, or are in foal
late, or to a horse that isn't considered particularly
desirable at the moment. But that's the same way that
those horses are selling in New York, Kentucky,
Maryland, Florida, or really anywhere in the world right
now, for that matter. So I thought it was a viable
marketplace. It felt good, and there was a lot of energy
and enthusiasm."
Closing Move, offered as hip 222, had hit the board
in four of six starts while racing for breeder Darley and
trainer Tom Albertrani. She is the second foal from
Show Me the Roses (Storm Cat), a half-sister to
champion Johannesburg (Hennessy) and from the
immediate family of successful sire Tale of the Cat
(Storm Cat) and Group 1 winner Minardi (Boundary).
"I bought her for my wife [Mimi] and Caroline
Stautberg," said Voss. "She was just beautiful. I loved
the way she looked and, really, everything about her.
We might run her one or two times, but she'll make a
good broodmare."
Stautberg owns Willow Oaks Farm in Monkton,
Maryland. Along with her late husband Gerald, she bred
Grade I winner Funny Moon (Malibu Moon).
There was solid trade for weanlings throughout the
day. A pair of youngsters from the first crop of multiple
graded winner Munnings (Speightstown) proved most
popular, with a filly (hip 95) selling for $67,000 to
Bernard Stables, and a colt (hip 37) going for $57,000
to Mill Creek Farm as agent. The registered New
York-bred babies were both consigned by Vinery.
Carrie Brogden was a prolific buyer on the day,
signing for two under the Machmer Hall banner and one
under her own name, as well as percentages of several
other offerings.

"I bought half of one mare," Brogden said, pointing
out hip 11, Leaves of Autumn (Expelled), a $14,000
purchase. "But I only bought her because the foal
behind her was so exceptional."
The mare's Not for Love colt sold for $40,000 to
Country Life Farm as agent.
"I bought pieces of
seven foals," Brogden
continued. "They will all
be pointed here for the
New York Preferred
Yearling Sale. This year
was our first year [there]
with Select Sales. We
thought it was solid, not
crazy, but it was solid for
big, strong horses that walked well and vetted
reasonably."
Overall, Brogden was encouraged by the afternoon.
"There are a lot of end-users here, plus the
pinhookers," she explained. "Obviously, there's a ton of
foals that don't meet the criteria. The foals that jump
through the hoops and are commercially sired with big
walks--I thought there was plenty of money for them
here. The two Munnings were fantastic foals and they
sold to their looks."
One of the weanlings that Brogden now has an
interest in is hip 144, a son of leading freshman sire
Spring At Last purchased in the name of Mad About
Stables for $37,000.
"I thought he was unreal," Brogden said of the colt
out of Cercis (Forty Niner). "He toed out a little bit up
front, but the sire has had two graded stakes winners
already. He was bred to very workmanlike mares. There
was no expectation, but he's got two of the best fillies
in the country. I felt this colt was value at that [price]. I
thought the good foals brought what they were worth,
if not a little bit more. We put dollars on what we
thought we could resell them for, so we tried to stick to
our budget pretty tightly."
The weanlings will head to Machmer Hall before
"hopefully" returning to this venue next summer.
Early in the day, several mares didn't draw a bid, but,
as Brogden pointed out, the current auction
environment demands a rigorous standard.
"I think what the regional market misses is culling,"
she emphasized. "I think with a strong regional market,
the horses and the management will follow the money.
There's a lot of savvy people that live here in New
York, and I think you're seeing a lot of the lower-end
mares culled. People don't want to cart them all the
way down to Kentucky."
Between racing and upcoming auctions, this new sale
tucked into an already busy spot on the calendar
"When you have OBS next weekend, the October
yearling sale the week after and then the November
sale, there's really no choice but for it to fall right
now," Brogden opined. "Are the horses going to be
affected, because they don't have the extra 30 days to
come out of weaning? Yes, absolutely, but i think the
pinhookers here are sharp enough to be aware of and
understand that, I really do." Cont. p2

Fasig-Tipton October Sale cont.
It is a tough time to be in the horse world, Brogden
reiterated.
"I need a mare like a hole in the head," she said
ruefully. "It's much harder to breed a good horse than
to buy one. By the time you spend the stud fee, and
carry them and foal them out, then you have to hope
they grow up right and vet out..."
The top-priced mare on the day was Song of
Broadway (Tiznow), catalogued as hip 83 from Darby
Dan as agent. She sold for $55,000 to Anthony
Muiccio. A big, handsome 5-year-old in the mold of her
sire, she is carrying her first foal by Freud.
Joe Applebaum of Off the Hook was also on hand for
future prospects, but came away empty-handed.
"Who doesn't like to come to Saratoga on a beautiful
autumn day?" he reasoned. "It was really about the
weanlings. There was definitely demand for them,
especially the colts, but the broodmare market
continues to suffer. I think for a first effort, they got off
to a good start."

RETIRED
Lentenor Retired:
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jackson=s Lentenor (h, 5,
Dynaformer--La Ville Rouge, by Carson City), a fullbrother to 2006 GI Kentucky Derby hero Barbaro, has
been retired from racing as the result of a tendon injury.
A maiden winner in his third career start and first at age
three, the bay was a close fourth in the GI Florida
Derby and went on to register a pair of allowance
victories later that season, including a course recordsetting performance at Tampa Bay Downs. In his
penultimate career start, Lentenor was victorious in the
Kitten=s Joy S. at Colonial Downs this past July. Stud
plans are under consideration with Headley Bell, Nicoma
Bloodstock, long-time bloodstock advisor to the
Jacksons.

Make-A-Wish Day at Keeneland:
Edited Press Release
Keeneland has days on which it schedules prestigious
races worth a lot of money, but no day is more
rewarding than Make-A-Wish Day, which will be held
on Wednesday. Since 2008, Keeneland and members of
the Thoroughbred industry have teamed up to grant the
wishes of children from Central Kentucky who are
battling life-threatening medical conditions.
Keeneland partners to host Make-A-Wish Day with
the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Casner Racing,
Coolmore Farm/Ashford Stud, Darley, Dixiana Farm,
Gainesway, Lane=s End Farm, Rood & Riddle Equine
Hospital, Shadwell Farm and Three Chimneys Farm.
As guests of honor at Keeneland, the Wish Children
and their families will enjoy a VIP afternoon at the track
highlighted by lunch and a behind-the-scenes tour. Wish
Families will meet jockeys in the Paddock and watch a
race from the winner=s circle. A Wish Child will present
the trophy for the race named after his/her sponsoring
farm.
The brisnet.com >Race of the Day= is the
8th Race, $52,000 Allowance, at Keeneland.

Meanwhile, fans will have the opportunity to help
grant a 10th wish by placing a donation into the
AWishing Well@ that will be set up just outside the
Paddock.
This marks the second year of involvement in
Make-A-Wish Day for Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital,
whose Wish Child, 7-year-old Olivia, wants to swim
with dolphins. Rood & Riddle has presented Olivia a gift
bag that included a big stuffed horse and horse-related
items from around the area. Tomorrow morning, she
will visit the veterinary facility, where she=ll be able to
meet admirers and love on some horses.
In 1982, Dr. Tom Riddle and Dr. Bill Rood founded
Rood & Riddle, which since 2005 has sponsored the
