Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center 2017 Winter Pre-Kindergarten Semester 3-4 Years Old Class Sessions Offered: Tuesdays 2:00pm-3:00pm, Wednesdays 2:00pm-3:00pm, Thursdays 9:30am-10:30am, OR Thursdays 1:30pm-2:30pm Goats January 17th/18th/19th During this class the students will visit our robust and friendly farm animal the goats! We’ll discover the many clever adaptations a goat has to help it live its carefree life. The class will lean what goats give back to the farm and how we take care of them while they’re here at Fernbrook. Sheep January 24th/25th/26th Warm wool and lanolin. There are the two products of our Shetland sheep. The young students will learn how the male, ram, takes care of his flock and how we harvest the finest wool for our clothing. Cow January 31st/February 1st/February 2nd A staple on any farm, cows provide milk and meat to thousands of consumers. Unlike goats and sheep, a cow can weigh up to 1500 pounds! Together we’ll learn how to take care of our largest farm animal and figure out how he helps protect his farm friends. Chickens February 7th/8th/9th Chasing chickens is fun! Did you know that they can see you coming even if they have their eyes closed? We’ll play with our feathered friends while learning unknown facts about how they take care of each other and themselves in a world of predators. Ducks February 14th/15th/16th Ducks NEVER get wet! It’s hard to believe that these feathered creatures live in water but stay so dry. In order to understand this unique adaptation the class will participate in an experiment with oil and water to see firsthand how this trait works. Predators February 21st/22nd/23rd Every farm has unwanted visitors. Together we’ll walk through the meadow and look for evidence of other animal life on the farm. The students will identify their tracks and see if these wild animals could be a threat to our animal barn residents. Prey February 28th/ March 1st/March 2nd Not all animals are dangerous. In fact some provide essential nourishment for other wildlife. The students will transform and imagine what it is like to live as another animal’s prey. Winter Birds March 7th/8th/9th The cold winters do not send all birds packing. During this class we will learn about permanent species. We will take a walk and see if we can find our friendly neighbors in their winter environments. * Please note that the class topics for the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are the same, but the content will be altered to fit the learning abilities of the different age groups. FFEEC is dedicated to providing age appropriate learning experiences for all children as they explore their natural world.* Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center 2017 Winter Kindergarten Semester 5 Years Old Class Sessions Offered: Tuesdays 3:00pm-4:00pm, Wednesdays 3:00pm-4:00pm, Thursdays 10:30am-11:30am OR Thursdays 2:30pm-3:30pm Goats January 17th/18th/19th During this class the students will visit our robust and friendly farm animal the goats!
