How to plant and care for seeds and plants.
AGENDAS AND INITIATIVES:
Learning Outside the Classroom.
Every Child Matters.
EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES:
Books about/images of herbs and spices, seeds,
compost, pots, seedlings/young plants, rakes,
trowels, spades, stones, bark, logs, paper,
colours pencils, plus anything else contained in
your design.
PREPARATION:
This garden needs to be well planned out before you
start planting. Think about the flowers and plants you
will be growing – size, shape, colour, when they flower
– so that they match your design.
Draw and colour it in on paper first (children can work
with a friend or in groups and share ideas).
You don’t just have to use flowers. You could plant
herbs or even add to the patterns with stones, pebbles, pieces, bark or small logs.
BACKGROUND
Herbs were the first medicines and were often used
as food preservatives and for cosmetic.
Explain the difference between herbs and spices:
herbs are plants where the leaves are harvested for use
in cooking. Spices tend to have tropical origins; we use
the roots, fruits, flowers, seeds or bark.
IDEAS TO CHOOSE FROM
• Ideas for choosing herbs:
– Historical uses of herbs – how were herbs used in
the ‘olden times’? Children investigate uses,
interview parents/carers and grandparents.
– Container herbs – easy-to-grow plants include
thyme, parsley, sage, marjoram and oregano.
– Fragrant herbs – mint, lavender, thyme, oregano
and lemon verbena.
– Herbal teas – chamomile, peppermint and their
therapeutic properties.
– Spaghetti herbs – basil, oregano, parsley and garlic,
create a pizza or pasta dish
Note: some herbs are best started as cuttings or plants
