“ Seminar on Singapore Standard for Gas Installation (SS 608 : 2015)” – 3 December 2015 by Colin Fong & Jean Lim edited by Queek Jiayu Gas by nature is highly combustible and may explode when exposed to flames or sparks. Therefore, implementing good work practices for safe gas installation is extremely important. In collaboration and partnership with SPRING Singapore, SDO@IES organised a half-day “Seminar on Singapore Standard for Gas Installation (SS 608 : 2015)” on 3 December 2015. The seminar attracted 383 participants from 217 organisations, amongst them notable academics, engineering professionals, architects, technical specialists & licensed gas service workers. Participants represented various regulatory authorities, statutory boards and businesses involved in the built environment, energy & power generation, and the importation and transmission network (pipeline) establishments. First, an update on the newly revised Singapore Standard for gas installation (SS 608 : 2015, formerly known as CP 51) was introduced. In this latest revision, the title was changed from “Manufactured Gas Pipe Installation” to “Gas Installation” to reflect its applications for both town gas and natural gas. With key changes in elements such as pipework requirements, radiography examination and records keeping, the essential requirements for safe and good practices in gas service work have been enhanced. The objective of SS 608 : 2015 is to be applicable to new gas installations as well as alterations of existing gas installations. It covers design, materials, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of gas installations and appliances. It is mandatory for all gas installations to comply with standards requirements, as stipulated in the Gas Act (Chapter 116A). Next, an overview was conducted on the essential requirements for gas installations and appliances, from design to commissioning and maintenance. Combined with lessons on best practices for installation techniques, participants’ knowledge of hazards and safety measures was enhanced. Mr Chan Kok Way, Chairman of Building and Construction Standards Committee (BCSC); Mr Chong Toh Kuan, Convenor, Working Group on SS 608; Er. Yeow Mei Leng, Mr Too Yew Yong, Members of the SS 608 Working Group, together with guest speakers Mr Sze Thiam Siong and Mr Liew Khee Boon, rounded out the stellar expertise that was present at the seminar.
